Is Robin McAlpine hallucinating, or is he trying to gaslight us?

  1. Gaslight, in this case.

Reading his whole post, right up until that point it was well put and all-too-credible. Active manoeuvres by party leadership to suffocate perceived rivals in the independence movement? You bet. If anything, it was reading as one of his best posts in a while—I only check his blog every once in a while now.

But aye, that utter clanger of a line that you home in on: an Up is Down, War is Peace, we have always been at war with Defactasia, that's jarring to say the least. Either a monumentally lazy piece of rhetoric (his essay was crying out for a turning point there, which that untruth serves as) or an active change of direction of his in where he wants to take his audience.

Swinney's SNP: definitely too radge, too fundie, and too much banging on about independence! Oh aye, that all checks out.

    1. It’s not Swinneys SNP. It’s the members and if they don’t like him they will remove. As for McAlpine he has demonstrated over many years that he is a carper from the sidelines, like clerkin and the others who appear together on The National patting each other on the back. They are failures.

  3. Scotland as a nation doesn't know who Robin McAlpine is, nor do they care, his opinion carries far less weight than he feels it should, and there's your answer, he's a failure, he doesn't like it, and he can't seem to get over it.

    1. He's been asked about it before. The trouble is, of course, that all such parties achieve bugger all media attention or traction with the public, getting humiliated like Alba and Atlas at the ballot box. It's a thankless and pointless endeavour, as he's also said.

    2. Yes because obviously anyone with detailed political ideas must immediately start a party. Writing policy and challenging weak thinking simply isn’t enough. Apparently the true test of every serious thinker is whether they fancy spending their evenings arguing over constitutions and branch meetings.

    6. Perhaps before asking what Common Weal’s plan is you might try reading Common Weal. Or listening to McAlpine. He has spent years writing and speaking about independence strategy in considerable detail. You are perfectly entitled to disagree with his proposals. But asking where the plan is when you apparently haven’t bothered to study what he has actually proposed is hardly a serious criticism.

It’s encouraging to hear John Swinney making positive noises on independence.
I think it’s quite a realistic target to have a referendum by 2031. It’s not quite the generation, that Alex Salmond mentioned back in 2014, but it’s certainly getting there. A generation, of course, being defined as 20-30 years.

    1. 2.54 Yes he did, as part of his electioneering, but it was just that…..electioneering. People would have to be daft to believe a wiki definition. This is an old question that unionists can’t and refuse to answer exactly what a generation is, because there is no exact definition or agreement across the world, eg in the USA it is 15-20
years. There is no global governing body or scientific committee which defines generations. Instead, time span is haphazardly explained through media, marketing firms, and the internet.

    2. Independence for ScotlandSeptember 27, 2026 at 2:13 PM

Currently in the fake union calling itself the UK a generation Is 319 years as that is how long it took for the first independence referendum to happen. Don’t hold your breath for the next one. England’s PM will never take the risk of agreeing a sec 30 and the current SNP leadership are more than happy for this situation to continue. Swinney even banned the supposed party of independence from discussing independence at its conference.

The Holyrood performance about Scotland’s right to decide was just another version of Sturgeon ‘s TWO Holyrood votes to hold indyref2.
Just throwing out some carrots for the SNP numpties to try and grab hold of.

With the SNP it is always promises of tasty independence carrots sometime in the future.

In 1707 the speaker of the English Parliament boasted that we have caught Scotland and we will hold her tight. In 2026 Swinney has caught Scotland and is holding her tight for Westminster.

  9. Robin McAlpine has made a formidable contribution to Scottish political debate. He tackles the hardest questions and refuses to hide behind easy slogans. Through Common Weal he has developed ambitious ideas and brought serious alternatives into public discussion. He challenges stale assumptions and forces difficult issues into the open. His command of policy gives his arguments real weight. His independence gives them real value. He has helped widen debate about Scotland’s economy and public services. He has also sharpened discussion about democracy and power. You can disagree with his conclusions. But his work has unquestionably added substance and intellectual ambition to Scotland’s public debate.

  10. McAlpine’s attacks on Nicola Sturgeon increasingly sound like hostility rather than serious criticism. He is entitled to challenge her record. But the relentless personal tone does him no favours. For many of us Sturgeon showed real leadership on net zero and LGBTQ+ equality when those issues demanded political courage. That record should not simply be sneered away. McAlpine is at his best when he dissects policy and presents alternatives. He is far less convincing when everything seems to circle back to Sturgeon. If his arguments are strong then he should not need the bitterness. Attack the decisions. Challenge the record. Leave the contempt behind.

There is very soon going to be no choice for the people of the North of Ireland because the English British are going to force it on them knowing full well they will retaliate

The biggest crooks have always resided in Westminster. The Murrells are just petty thieves working for Westminster.

KC are you a British Nationalist of an English Nationalist? You must be one or the other because you certainly are not a Scottish Nationalist. Or can I assume you are an immigrant that has come over on a boat.

KC you have been told many, many times the most recent census for Scotland had very, very few Brit Scots. So once again you are lying.

What is your country? You have been asked this many times as well and you refuse to answer.

    10. Anon at 8.57. Stop being disingenuous. No-one is asking her to answer for Murrels crimes. She is being asked to answer for her failures as F M of Scotland. Her gender/sex is irrelevant. Answer the question put earlier. Why did she tell the SNP membership to stop talking about finances when there was clearly a problem? Let's have your answer.

    11. Not only can't Sturgeon see a big fuck off motorhome, she's never been in her own kitchen, tells everyone SNP finances are fine but hasn't seen them.... or her own family finances. Does she sweat or go to pizza express, let's ask Prince Andrew.

Just how much of the £60k worth of embezzled female goods found its way to the alphabetties? Or did only certain betties get a share?

It’s incredible that Murrell got Legal Aid but he says he can pay back every penny of the embezzled funds.

Where are all the stolen goods? Who is guilty of the crime of reset? Who has stuff hidden away in a cupboard at home?

When it gets to 60% on a regular basis the same people who are not democrats will say it needs to be 70%. Britnats by definition are not democrats. They still dream about the Empire and enslaving the rest of the world while at the same time boasting about Westminster being the mother of all parliaments.

Three of them thought it a bad thing, though according to them the SP needed a wake up call. The fourth contributer Phil Bothwell wanted Holyrood closed, it would end the SNP gravy train according to him. I understand he was once an SNP MSP. But now, jeez, does he hate the party with a vengeance, to the extent of exposing the Scottish people to direct rule from London. Bothwell and his mate Campbell are useful idiots for Westminster.
