Gaslight, in this case.
ReplyDeleteReading his whole post, right up until that point it was well put and all-too-credible. Active manoeuvres by party leadership to suffocate perceived rivals in the independence movement? You bet. If anything, it was reading as one of his best posts in a while—I only check his blog every once in a while now.
But aye, that utter clanger of a line that you home in on: an Up is Down, War is Peace, we have always been at war with Defactasia, that's jarring to say the least. Either a monumentally lazy piece of rhetoric (his essay was crying out for a turning point there, which that untruth serves as) or an active change of direction of his in where he wants to take his audience.
Swinney's SNP: definitely too radge, too fundie, and too much banging on about independence! Oh aye, that all checks out.
It’s not Swinneys SNP. It’s the members and if they don’t like him they will remove. As for McAlpine he has demonstrated over many years that he is a carper from the sidelines, like clerkin and the others who appear together on The National patting each other on the back. They are failures.
DeleteThe members must really, really like waiting then.
DeleteAch there's always the ATLS !
DeleteSorry, but what does "too fundie" mean?
DeleteFundamentalist. The classic gradualist vs. fundamentalist divide in the party. Swinney being the dictionary definition of the gradualist approach, himself.
DeleteAnon at 11.28 am .... thanks for that.
DeleteOr doing bugger all except moan, in the case of McAlpine and his china McKenna.
DeleteSNP members are like Rip Van Winkle. They drank Sturgeon’s magical potion and have been asleep for the last 12 years. Only 8 more years to go.
DeleteAt least it's only gaslighting. Imagine if he was trying to electrocute us. There's nothing cute about that.
ReplyDeleteScotland as a nation doesn't know who Robin McAlpine is, nor do they care, his opinion carries far less weight than he feels it should, and there's your answer, he's a failure, he doesn't like it, and he can't seem to get over it.
ReplyDeletewhat is current day for I-DAY when the SNP really, really, really, we're no kiddin' ACTUALLY GOING FOR IT this time
ReplyDelete- I want to put it in my diary
BTW what happened in the indyref that Sturgeon said "put it in your diary" - you see I was in a coma
Oh it’s Sturgeon fault! Saddo mysogenist- who are you? Och it’s ok we know who you are.
ReplyDeleteShould be an apostrophe after Sturgeon and you've spelled misogynist wrong. Och, don't worry, we know you are thick
DeleteShould be a full stop at the end of your 2nd sentence.
DeleteTHERE should be a full stop...
DeleteScotland will not be independent until we receive permission from Robin McAlpine and Stuart Campbell. Robin thinks the SNP are useless, perhaps Common Weal should put up candidates for election ?
ReplyDeleteHe's been asked about it before. The trouble is, of course, that all such parties achieve bugger all media attention or traction with the public, getting humiliated like Alba and Atlas at the ballot box. It's a thankless and pointless endeavour, as he's also said.
DeleteYes because obviously anyone with detailed political ideas must immediately start a party. Writing policy and challenging weak thinking simply isn’t enough. Apparently the true test of every serious thinker is whether they fancy spending their evenings arguing over constitutions and branch meetings.
DeleteSo what is his purpose in life?
DeleteAnon 11.34 and 3.09 so what's Common Weal's plan to achieve Scottish independence?
DeleteAnon at 3:19 - don't ask awkward questions.
DeletePerhaps before asking what Common Weal’s plan is you might try reading Common Weal. Or listening to McAlpine. He has spent years writing and speaking about independence strategy in considerable detail. You are perfectly entitled to disagree with his proposals. But asking where the plan is when you apparently haven’t bothered to study what he has actually proposed is hardly a serious criticism.
DeleteLife's too short, you can explain them briefly.
DeleteOff topic,
ReplyDeleteIt’s encouraging to hear John Swinney making positive noises on independence.
I think it’s quite a realistic target to have a referendum by 2031. It’s not quite the generation, that Alex Salmond mentioned back in 2014, but it’s certainly getting there. A generation, of course, being defined as 20-30 years.
Afternoon, KC. You must have over-slept.
DeleteKC has gone anonymous since he was outed as the Manky Jaiket.
DeleteAnon 12.15. A generation equals seven years in Northern Ireland.
Delete3:16,
DeleteHow can a generation be 7 years??
Hideous comment!
“Google” it! Clearly states 20-30 years.
Scotland is told that a referendum is once a generation while NI can have one every seven years.
Delete3.26 So google AI says that a generation is 20-30 years and you believe it? The yoon nutters are out!
Delete9:48pm, once again you halfwit, A GENERATION IS CLEARLY DEFINED AS 20-30 YEARS.
DeleteDon’t think anon at 9:48pm is the sharpest.
Delete10.25 and 11.03 Where is a generation “clearly defined” officially as 20-30 years and in which country? Dodgy google AI or because you read it on the internet does not mean it is fact. Why do you care what the definition of a generation is? We have a General Election every five years allowing people who have just become of voting age to choose which bastard Westminster government will reign over us so why is it different for us Scots! I ain’t the half-wit! The gaslighting yoons think we are mugs, unfortunately for you lot, we, the Scottish people, hold sovereignty and your UK is finished!
Delete5:32am, “A generation is generally considered to be about 20-30 years”
DeleteSource Wikipedia.
Stick yer independence where the sun disnae shine. The majority of the Scottish people are sick tae the back teeth of this nonsense!
Thankfully Andy Burnham has stated another referendum is off limits. There are far more important issues to be dealing with than this utter nonsense.
Get a grip you dipstick.
Anon at 8.59 am -- calm down, dear.
DeleteAnon 8.59 Is that you Mr Marra ?
Delete8.59am is KC.
Delete12:15
ReplyDeleteIt was unfortunate Alex made that comment back then. Often, when a referendum is mentioned, unionists will cast this up.
2.54 Yes he did, as part of his electioneering, but it was just that…..electioneering. People would have to be daft to believe a wiki definition. This is an old question that unionists can’t and refuse to answer exactly what a generation is, because there is no exact definition or agreement across the world, eg in the USA it is 15-20
Deleteyears. There is no global governing body or scientific committee which defines generations. Instead, time span is haphazardly explained through media, marketing firms, and the internet.
Currently in the fake union calling itself the UK a generation Is 319 years as that is how long it took for the first independence referendum to happen. Don’t hold your breath for the next one. England’s PM will never take the risk of agreeing a sec 30 and the current SNP leadership are more than happy for this situation to continue. Swinney even banned the supposed party of independence from discussing independence at its conference.
DeleteThe Holyrood performance about Scotland’s right to decide was just another version of Sturgeon ‘s TWO Holyrood votes to hold indyref2.
Just throwing out some carrots for the SNP numpties to try and grab hold of.
With the SNP it is always promises of tasty independence carrots sometime in the future.
In 1707 the speaker of the English Parliament boasted that we have caught Scotland and we will hold her tight. In 2026 Swinney has caught Scotland and is holding her tight for Westminster.
Ach there's always the ATLS.
DeleteIfs, calling the UK a “fake union” is just ridiculous, and frankly embarrassing.
DeleteI’d advise you to stop spouting this nonsense.
London is a tip.
Delete4.43pm It’s embarrassing that anybody supports the fake union.
Delete5:39, you make a complete fool of yourself with that hideous comment.
DeleteIt’s widely regarded that London is one of the finest cities in the world.
KC at 8.39am London built on the back of millions of slaves and oppressed peoples around the world.
DeleteKC should try to live in the London that the tourists never see!
DeleteRobin McAlpine has made a formidable contribution to Scottish political debate. He tackles the hardest questions and refuses to hide behind easy slogans. Through Common Weal he has developed ambitious ideas and brought serious alternatives into public discussion. He challenges stale assumptions and forces difficult issues into the open. His command of policy gives his arguments real weight. His independence gives them real value. He has helped widen debate about Scotland’s economy and public services. He has also sharpened discussion about democracy and power. You can disagree with his conclusions. But his work has unquestionably added substance and intellectual ambition to Scotland’s public debate.
ReplyDeleteThat all just proves how inaccurate and wrong, AI is.
DeleteThat is quite a claim. Which part is inaccurate? Which part is wrong? Simply declaring something false does not make it false. Point to a specific error and explain it. Then there is something worth discussing. Until then it is just an assertion dressed up as an argument.
DeleteIntellectual ambition? More like a place in Private Eye's Pseuds Corner.
DeleteFormidable!! That IS funny!
DeleteI said wrong and inaccurate, not false, and I said that about AI.
DeleteSome people earn good money training up AI. I wouldn't do it even if the AI handler paid me..
McAlpine’s attacks on Nicola Sturgeon increasingly sound like hostility rather than serious criticism. He is entitled to challenge her record. But the relentless personal tone does him no favours. For many of us Sturgeon showed real leadership on net zero and LGBTQ+ equality when those issues demanded political courage. That record should not simply be sneered away. McAlpine is at his best when he dissects policy and presents alternatives. He is far less convincing when everything seems to circle back to Sturgeon. If his arguments are strong then he should not need the bitterness. Attack the decisions. Challenge the record. Leave the contempt behind.
ReplyDelete3.44pm
DeleteThere is no leadership on net zero. Oil and gas is reserved to the UK.
Sturgeon kept her personal interest in pride matters a secret. I attack her decision to send male rapists to women’s prisons.
The baby box is good.
The fact is most people vote SNP for independence. She failed miserably.
She is good at self promotion.
Attacking Sturgeon's record on indy progress is so easy it's almost lazy journalism to keep doing it.
ReplyDeleteAgree 100 percent.
DeleteTophole old chap! Tally ho!
DeleteYoon loons!
DeleteShe did more harm than good to the lives of trans people by bringing public focus onto her ill judged policies.
DeleteShe unequivocally handed the power to hold a referendum over to the Unionists by going to the Supreme Court.
Also, only an idiot would be believe she knew nothing about her husband's criminality.
Your attack is dishonest. Nicola championed LGBTQIA+ dignity and net zero while you manufactured panic and blamed Nicola. Nicola didn’t gift unionists a referendum — Nicola exposed their stranglehold. Accusing Nicola of knowing a husband’s crimes with zero evidence is baseless. Face Nicola on the record, not smears.

I wish the russians had droned the shit out of bojo - real karma; he personally ran over to ukraine to stop a peace deal.
DeleteKarma is coming to the english, whether it is on boats, muslim demographics or russian hypersonics, it is in the wind.
Good riddance. Maybe with London flattened and radioactive Sweeno might have the courage to ask the english corpses for a section 30?
Fortune favours the prepared mind, and if england no longer exists then surely that is good for us? Omelettes and eggs, people, the greatest good for the greatest number, a doctrine the english developed.
We have the managed decline of Europe and the west happening in front of our eyes. Give it another 15/20 years and Russia wouldn’t waste a bomb on us as we will be just another 3rd world shite hole

DeleteSwinney should be thinking and acting outside the box. Invite himself to Moscow for talks about what an independent Scotland and Russia can do for each other.
Anon@12:11, so you think Swinney should go to Moscow for discussions with Putin!!! A man who invaded Ukraine and is responsible for tens of thousands of deaths, including many women and children, and has caused unimaginable suffering!!

ReplyDeleteThe Orange Order march should have been allowed to go ahead.
Delete9:19: have to agree. The march was legal, and should have been allowed to go ahead. Protesting against a legal march risks causing significant disorder.

DeleteLet's take the spirit of Drumcree on to the streets of Dundee.
ReplyDeleteIf only.
DeleteWonder what a global opinion poll on the present standing of Trump v Putin would show?
ReplyDeleteI am pretty sure Trump would lose that one big time.
Brilliant to see the racist bigoted neanderthal O.O.garbage getting kicked in the teeth once again, across the water.
The sooner that scum is completely banned over here the better.
Aye lets be like North Korea or China. On second thoughts we’re rapidly becoming like them. No great.
ReplyDeleteNope.
DeleteLet's try to be racist/bigot free as much as we are able.
The O.O.have no place in a decent 21st century society.
They are racist bigots who are only interested in battles of the past and are anathema to a civilised future.
They should be stamped into the ground where they belong.
Ridiculous post by anon@11:50.
DeleteThe march was legal. The protesters could have caused real trouble and were out of order in my view.
Those Orange Bigots are the only 'ridiculous' thing here.
DeleteA total ban on their ridiculous racist bigoted marches should already be in place.
They and their followers are nothing but throwback-scum.

DeletePity.
The nationalists should have allowed the march to go ahead, instead of risking disorder. It could have turned nasty and there will probably be repercussions, for which the protesters will obviously be responsible for.
DeleteIt was local residents who objected to the bigots' march through their local area.
DeleteGreat example of local democracy at work..
More local residents should take the same action and block the bigots' marches in their areas, until the O.O. bigots have almost nowhere to go.
Nevertheless the march had been given the go ahead by the authorities, and clearly should have been allowed to proceed.
DeleteNo.
DeleteLocal people will win the day and the bigots' march will either be re-routed or cancelled.
The orange freaks will lose either way.
A very good outcome for all decent folk.
Scotland under Nicola Sturgeon set net zero for 2045 five years before the rest of tue UK. She advanced LGBTQIA+ rights through hate-crime laws and gender-recognition reform to protect dignity and reduce barriers for a stigmatised minority.
ReplyDeleteHow did all that work out for her? And in the meantime NHS, Education, Transport and Road infrastructure all went to suit. But she got a book deal. Since you are here, why did she ignore the concerns resignations and warnings from experienced senior office holders about party finances? Spare me more disingenuous nonsense. Answer that simple question.
Delete12.29 You seem to have missed out English Brexit and a global pandemic mmm! Wonder why?
DeleteAnon at 12.38. What are you havering about? Answer the question put to you. No? Thought not. N S let SNP and Scotland down badly. If you cannot see that you have a problem.

Delete4.07pm your comment that Sturgeon let Scotland down badly presupposes that the self confessed British person was not ever anything but a Brit who was in it for self advancement and fancy expensive goods.
drivel of the lowest order. NS supports independence when you still voted labour/tory
DeleteNS now lives in London, and plays politics alongside Michael Gove. Independence, or Scotland for that matter, couldn't be further from her mind.
Delete12.55pm I bet she is doing what she likes in London’s fleshpots. Nicola the drama Queen.
DeleteFM Michelle O'Neil was representing the people of Northern Ireland who elected her, not the English/British government who did not vote for anybody including the English PM who nobody, not even the English voted for
ReplyDeleteThe only illegality in Northern Ireland is the British who partitioned it in the first place in order to serve themselves
The march should and could not go ahead because the British are attempting to provoke and cause trouble but they're not ready yet for the deaths that would without doubt be a probability
The British have begun their campaign on all three of us, Scotland Wales and the North of Ireland
We are territories that they believe belong to them and they're going to go to great lengths now to hold on to what they own
There is very soon going to be no choice for the people of the North of Ireland because the English British are going to force it on them knowing full well they will retaliate
And that's what the British want to give them the excuse they crave,
except this time the English/British will lose.
What complete and utter bullshit.
DeleteCorrect.
DeleteAnon ar 2.03PM
DeleteYou are correct.
Brits out of Ireland has a nice ring to it. But only if the mad Orange men head to England rather than Scotland. Let them march round and round Big Ben and the Palace of Westminster. The tourists will love it until one of the marchers spits on them for being a Spanish/French Catholic.
DeleteIt is astonishing that the SNP membership continue to back the leadership knowing that Swinney put in place a strategy that guaranteed there would be no mandate for pursuing Indy. The attempt to now pretend that Green votes do actually count is just a further pretence. Nothing short of a complete clear out of the current cabinet will see any real commitment to pursue Indy. And that cannot happen democratically because of rules introduced by the very people we need out. They will retire over the next 5-10 years with big pensions paid for by our taxes. Sickening.
ReplyDeleteConfusing the party and the public about what's good for the SNP and what's good good for Independence is pretty much the job description these days.
DeleteDevolution without an exit clause lets the SNP prosper while Independence withers. This is not healthy, but it's absolutely where we are.
100% correct and there’s no end in sight
ReplyDelete100% Correct. You're in the 1% Club
Deleteis is astonishing that we must clear out the snp when all other attempts by the pretendy ALBA and brit supporters have failed miserably.

ReplyDeleteSad days for Nationalists.Commenting on each other's attempts to maintain the Independence dream by hook or by crook(Sorry to mention Mr Murrell).
ReplyDeleteWell, the dream will never die which is more than can be said for Stephen Flynn's Political career.I do wonder, though,if Nationalists will ever understand the utter irrelevance of Holyrood to their project. It was designed as an electoral trap for the SNP and that is exactly what it is.2014 is in the past and in the past it will remain.
8.34pm are you an English nationalist or a British nationalist?
DeleteThe biggest crooks have always resided in Westminster. The Murrells are just petty thieves working for Westminster.
Usual bull from Ifs@9:26.
Delete9.26: A woman should not have to answer for her husband. Nicola Sturgeon did not know what Peter Murrell did. She showed the courage needed on net zero by setting 2045 five years ahead of England and also the courage needed on LGBTQIA+ rights with hate crime law and gender reform.
DeleteWe have a sad Sturgeon worshipper this morning.
DeleteAye and I bet they/them room will be festooned in Palestine flags with no saltire in sight
Delete8.57 am save the date 19/10/23. Some of us vote SNP for independence not rapists in women’s prisons. She/he/it/they achieved NOTHING on gender reform but pissoff the vast majority of Scotland. Has she been to Specsavers yet so she can see a massive luxury motorhome? Babyboxes are good though.
DeleteWell KC at 10.11pm are you an English nationalist or a British Nationalist?
DeleteAs I’ve told you many times Ifs, I’m proud to be British and Scottish. As are many many others , whether you like it or not!
DeleteKC are you a British Nationalist of an English Nationalist? You must be one or the other because you certainly are not a Scottish Nationalist. Or can I assume you are an immigrant that has come over on a boat.
DeleteKC you have been told many, many times the most recent census for Scotland had very, very few Brit Scots. So once again you are lying.
What is your country? You have been asked this many times as well and you refuse to answer.
Anon at 8.57. Stop being disingenuous. No-one is asking her to answer for Murrels crimes. She is being asked to answer for her failures as F M of Scotland. Her gender/sex is irrelevant. Answer the question put earlier. Why did she tell the SNP membership to stop talking about finances when there was clearly a problem? Let's have your answer.
DeleteNot only can't Sturgeon see a big fuck off motorhome, she's never been in her own kitchen, tells everyone SNP finances are fine but hasn't seen them.... or her own family finances. Does she sweat or go to pizza express, let's ask Prince Andrew.

DeleteYou are clutching at straws silly billy. Everybody knows what Sturgeon is NOW.
Just how much of the £60k worth of embezzled female goods found its way to the alphabetties? Or did only certain betties get a share?
DeleteIt’s incredible that Murrell got Legal Aid but he says he can pay back every penny of the embezzled funds.
Where are all the stolen goods? Who is guilty of the crime of reset? Who has stuff hidden away in a cupboard at home?

And her answer?
"Because I don't believe in democracy, I am a wannabe fascist dictator, and want to impose my own narrow view over more than 50% of the population".
Yes, that's what I thought she said.
When it gets to 60% on a regular basis the same people who are not democrats will say it needs to be 70%. Britnats by definition are not democrats. They still dream about the Empire and enslaving the rest of the world while at the same time boasting about Westminster being the mother of all parliaments.
DeleteAccording to Skier's graphs independence is at 130% and rising and that's only baseline support. Actual independence is much higher.
DeleteSkier’s Ski slope graph said ten years ago we would be independent by now. What went wrong - oh that’s right Sturgeon the Betrayer did her stuff.
DeleteDaily confrontation at Holyrood and Westminster should be the norm. The S G has a majority of MSPs in favour of independence. According to Thatcher that is enough. But there is nothing. Water electricity oil and gas, all flowing south. . Our resources keeping England going. And we let them.

4.24pm did you speak to Thatcher via a seance? Did she tell you to keep the Falklands British as well?
DeleteI watched Through a Scottish Prism podcast. Barrheid Boy held up a page of the Daily Express showing an article about a campaign to close doon the Scottish Parliament. Three of them thought it a bad thing, though according to them the SP needed a wake up call. The fourth contributer Phil Bothwell wanted Holyrood closed, it would end the SNP gravy train according to him. I understand he was once an SNP MSP. But now, jeez, does he hate the party with a vengeance, to the extent of exposing the Scottish people to direct rule from London. Bothwell and his mate Campbell are useful idiots for Westminster.
