Scott McTominay, in spite of his stellar year, was inexplicably excluded from the shortlist for BBC Sports Personality of the Year. Meanwhile the Team of the Year award had a shortlist of three, of which farcically two were teams called "England" - and this in a year when Scotland had won the Men's World Curling Championship. The BBC's use of the annual awards ceremony to push the ideology of Greater England nationalism is not exactly subtle. In the video below, I make a modest proposal for reform of the shortlisting procedure that would guarantee fair Scottish representation - but that of course is not an outcome the BBC are likely to regard as remotely desirable.
Another reason not to pay the colonial broadcaster
ReplyDeleteI remember at the Olympics a few years ago the odious Clare Balding humiliating Rhona Martin, the skip of the curling team, and making her apologise for calling it the "Scottish Team", then lecturing her that they was representing "Britain". It was disgraceful and, sadly, Rhona apologised. Haven't been able to stomach Balding's on-screen caring persona.
ReplyDeleteIronically Balding seemed similarly unaware that there *was* a Scottish team at Glasgow 2014. She seemed utterly convinced that Scottish athletes were instead competing for a team called "the Home Nations".
DeleteYes, she's the perfect BBC person. Her employer must adore her.
DeleteBalding is the Olga Skabeyeva of BBC Sport.
DeleteIn fairness a full 5 minutes on the bbc “National” News was all about Australia’s cricketers or rather 5 mins of England’s not playing to their full potential as a team. I think they are getting beat.
ReplyDeleteHaven't watched it in years. Complete waste of time unless you are interested in English sport
ReplyDeleteI'm 73 and it's been the same since I was a nipper. I stopped watching it decades ago.
ReplyDeleteI see in The National’s sister paper the Herald Kevin McKenna is showing his true colours these days. I remember when he tried to fool folk that he supported independence-really a means of inveigling himself into our cause. Now he is showing himself up in all his glory as a Brit nationalist. I also remember when the Herald had true journalists. Changed days.
ReplyDeleteFor SGP readers who do not read the Britnat Herald, unlike you, why have you not said WHY you have made this claim about McKenna. What has McKenna said ? Also why are you supporting a Britnat paper? Are YOU the Britnat trying to cause division?
DeleteI read some articles from the herald , the national, bbc, CNN. I don’t subscribe but at least you don’t disagree that McKenna isn’t an Independence supporter.
DeleteAnon at 9.05pm you were asked what McKenna said in that article for you to come to your conclusion that he does not support independence. You ignored the question. No answer = no credibility.
DeleteGood grief. Trump the Redactor has out-redacted John the Redactor. Swinney must have been passing on his experience of the benefits of redacting the hell out of inconvenient documents when he was at the opening of Trump’s new golf course in Aberdeen earlier this year. As ever Trump would want to be seen as the world’s greatest ever redactor.
ReplyDeleteYou’re doing a good job of impersonating ifs. The absence of the orange moniker is the giveaway though.
DeleteNothing better to do with your time?
"John the Redactor". My god, that is side-splittingly hilarious, not to mention profoundly original and witty.
DeleteAnon at 7.23pm - you forgot to say accurate and why do you think it is funny that people like Trump and Swinney just freely redact away to hide wrong doing. I don’t think there is anything funny about it.
DeleteAnon at 6.00pm you are clueless. Hercules Poirot you ain’t. Benoit Blanc no chance. Not even Inspector Clouseau. My advice to you is stop showcasing your ignorance.
DeleteIfs, I have a cunning plan!
DeleteIfS,
DeleteI understand where anon@6:00pm is coming from.
It’s confusing. You may be IfS, but you need to post in the same way each time, ie with or without the moniker, otherwise people are going to wonder. I’m sure you can understand this.
Anon at 9.37pm 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 you are easily confused. Why don’t you post with a consistent moniker instead of confusing everyone as to whether you are the same as some other anon posting? Try looking at yourself.
DeleteGood for you Baldrick at 9.07pm. More than the SNP have, so well done you. No need to share it though. Keep it your secret.
DeleteYou don’t do ironic, do you, ifs!
DeleteIFS is working for Sarwar……in case you didn’t get it. Igonore the ignoramus!!!
DeleteIFS comments answers and agrees with himself as anonymous as well
DeleteHe's multi talentless
I see Pam Duncan-glancy of labour won’t stand again. Will Jackie Baillie follow?
ReplyDeleteSeems like she is still friends of a sex offender the same as Labour…….the offenders of Scotland!!!
DeleteOn the subject of the English Sports personality of the Year Award I haven’t watched it for decades. Just like Westminster, English votes will always dominate so England gets what England wants. If Balding is involved then that means I am even more pleased I don’t watch it. It’s just another phoney British award. McIlroy, this year’s winner, is seen as Irish by most of the golfing world.
ReplyDeleteIs that what people call a game changer? Or does that only apply if you've heard of the people concerned? Asking for Keir Hardie.
ReplyDeleteScotland punches above it's weight in SPOTY. 10% of the winners with 8% of the population.
ReplyDeleteNo, that only works if you include Andy Murray's three wins, which were very much about Britishness (ie. Greater Englishness) and not about Scottishness. "The first British man to win Wimbledon since Fred Perry", Great Britain winning the Davis Cup, etc, etc.
