Every year in the last fifty has contained a world event that the current SNP leadership could have used as an excuse for postponing an indyref yet again

The above tweets attracted a hysterical response from certain quarters, to which all I'd say is that the SNP leadership loyalists doth protest too much.  They evidently know that this is the point at which they have to double down and claim that the war in Ukraine is yet another totally unforeseeable event that must, sadly and inevitably, delay the supposedly "scheduled" 2023 independence referendum yet again.  If they don't maintain that pretence with the utmost seriousness and self-righteousness, a large chunk of the SNP's own support base might start to think that the leadership have cried wolf once too often.  Actually, they're likely to start thinking that anyway.

Yes, in the literal sense the current war was largely unforeseeable, but what we do know and what we have always known is that major world events will crop up fairly frequently and regularly.  If you squint hard enough, every year in the last fifty has contained an event that could have been used as an excuse by the current SNP leadership for kicking independence into the long grass.  This is not even the first time in the last decade that Russia has invaded Ukraine, and yet other countries' politics have gone on.  It's the third time this century that Russia has invaded a fellow ex-Soviet republic, and yet other countries' politics have gone on.  The Soviet Union was at war in Afghanistan every year between 1979 and 1989, and yet other countries' politics went on.  The US and its allies were at war in Afghanistan every year between 2001 and 2021, and yet other countries' politics went on.  Israel has been in conflict with its Arab neighbours almost constantly since it came into existence in the 1940s, and yet other countries' politics have gone on.

Let's be honest: the only genuine reason the SNP leadership have ever had for postponing an indyref (a reason as opposed to an excuse) was Covid.  It would have been pretty much impossible to hold a referendum during full lockdown, and for campaigning reasons it might have been undesirable to hold it during a partial lockdown.  But with all of the governments of the UK prematurely declaring a return to normality (even though the virus is still absolutely everywhere), that reason no longer applies.  If the Scottish Government are now immediately latching onto yet another totally unconnected "delay is unavoidable" narrative, it's hard to escape the conclusion that they're not looking for opportunities to bring independence about - they're frantically searching for excuses to run away from it.

We as an independence movement don't have to continue going pointlessly round in circles like this.  There's a political party out there that doesn't just believe in independence as a nice idea in the abstract, but actually wants to achieve it in the real world, and with an appropriate sense of urgency.  Please consider giving Alba your first preference vote in the local council elections in May, and let's see if we can get the campaign for independence firmly back on track.

Please bear with me as I continue promoting Scot Goes Pop's fundraising drive.  Opinion polls are so expensive that since I started commissioning them, fundraising has almost become like painting the Forth Bridge.  If you'd like to help this blog continue for another year, or to help us commission another full-scale poll like the six we've commissioned over the last two years, here are the various options for donating...

Via the Scot Goes Pop polling fundraiser for 2021-22, which I set up in the autumn and is part-funded.

If you prefer to donate directly, that can be done via Paypal or bank transfer:

Or email me for my bank details.  (My contact email address is different from my Paypal address, and can be found in the sidebar of the desktop version of the site, or on my Twitter profile.)

  1. Ukraine was in a war in 2014, along with many more areas of the globe. The only difference is Nicola Sturgeon is FM.

  2. VOTE ALBA FOR SCOTTISH INDEPENDENCE

Sturgeon didn't even need a world event as an excuse not to have a referendum in Jan 2020. In her speech she just declared she would not be carrying out an illegal/ wildcat referendum and there would be no referendum in 2020 without a sec30 gold standard.

Independence supporters then subsequently had what can only be described as a mass self delusion exercise or mass cognitive dissonance and told themselves that it was due to Covid. It was not. That excuse came later from the SNP.

It was that speech in Jan 2020 that convinced me Sturgeon was not to be trusted and certainly was no independence leader.

On Feb 27 this year I posted on SGP that there will come a time when we will find out who the true independence supporters are and that time will not be long in coming. Blackford blurting out his comments seems to have started the wall of denial in many people's minds about Sturgeon and the SNP to start to shake if not yet crumbling. Crikey I mean even Ruth Wishart isnae happy. It looks like Ruth is a true independence supporter. If she keeps this up she will be ditched from STV's Scotland Tonight programme where they like tame Sturgeon supporters ( e.g. Shona Craven) representing Scottish independence.

Meanwhile the WGD numpties just do their usual thing and ignore what Blackford said. The Ukraine war and the British Labour Party in Scotland are the subjects under discussion. Indyref2yespleasenicola is in his element droning on about drones and other weapons of war in Ukraine.

Your comments about the SNP excuses are amusing James, no doubt about that, but ultimately if you are a supporter of independence it is a very very sad state of affairs. Sturgeon betrayed Salmond and she is betraying Scotland. All SNP MPs and MSPs are complicit in this and I will not be voting SNP again until there is a leadership that actually wants independence.

  3. Sec 30 Request

More than 2 years have passed since Sturgeon last requested a sec 30 from Johnston. Johnston, of course, told her to pissof. So if a referendum is happening next year as numpties believe why does Sturgeon not request a sec 30. After all when he refuses again it will clearly demonstrate to the Scottish public that there is no option but to proceed without a sec30. Alternatively, he could do what Sturgeon/Blackford et al have been saying for years and cave in to democracy. Or did they not really believe this and have been gaslighting the people of Scotland.

Indeed in Sept 30 2020 Mr Kavanagh says: " I have been talking about the possibility of a plebiscite election for years. However it's only going to succeed if we are seen to exhaust the s30 route first . That will give it legitimacy in the eyes of both the majority of Scottish and international opinion."

So why is Sturgeon not requesting a sec 30 and "exhausting " this route. After all it has always been her preferred route.

Sturgeon and Blackford are more concerned about Ukraine's independence than Scotland's independence.

  4. INDYREF2 IN 2023?

The ultra nicophant WGD numpty Dr Jim says in response to Blackfords mealy mouth words: " is still scheduled for 2023, that timescale has never changed"

    Questions for Jimbo.

    1. What's the date of this scheduled referendum?

    2. What is the question being asked?

Scheduled means that something is planned for a specific date and time.

The reality is that its a promise made by a politician ( Sturgeon) who has a long and extensive history of broken promises, particularly when it comes to mandates for an independence refendum.

So, to summarise, Dr Jim is posting pish but the WGD numpties lap up the pish.

    1. More pish from Jimbo and Skier etc. The fact that the The National is quoting Sturgeon as saying Indyref2 will happen next year is good enough for the nicophants. This is the newspaper that has had a multitude of previous headings declaring Indyref2 is just around the corner over the whole period of Sturgeon being FM and of course Sturgeon herself and her multitude of broken promises.

The numpties treat Sturgeon as a god and the National as the Independence bible.
      Numpties like their blind faith.

Me, I'll believe it when a date and the question for the referendum are decided and agreed in law. Until then heard it all before from Sturgeon and the numpties.
