The day that the Scottish Tories finally saw themselves through the contemptuous eyes of their Westminster masters

The controversial journalist David Leask may be surprised to learn that I don't have an encyclopedic knowledge of Russian history. But one thing I do know is that Bloody Sunday in 1905 was the pivotal moment when the populace started to see Tsarism for what it truly was.  Until then they had believed that their suffering was the fault of the Tsar's ministers and staff, who kept the truth from him.  They honestly thought he loved his people so much that if he had known what was happening, he would have been deeply shocked and would have been bound to help.  But when they attempted to petition him directly, they found he held them in exactly the same contempt and quickly ordered guns to be turned on them.

I suspect that, on a smaller scale, a number of Scottish Tories have had an equivalent epiphany over the last 24 hours.  Until now, they've probably assumed that when the UK government sneer at the Scottish Government, the contempt is directed solely at the SNP and at Nicola Sturgeon - and that will always have seemed absolutely fine, because rank and file Scottish Tory members, and indeed Scottish Tory voters, wholeheartedly share that contempt.  But suddenly they've been confronted with evidence that the contempt of London Tories is for Scotland and Scots as a whole, and that Scottish Tories are most certainly not exempt from it.  At the first sign of the duly elected leader of the Scottish Conservative party asserting himself, the Westminster mask instantly slipped and Douglas Ross was derided as a lightweight, who cannot possibly be taken seriously because he was speaking in Elgin, not London but flipping Elgin, which is apparently not somewhere that serious people go to speak.  So much for the pretty fiction that our imperial masters regard all the Tory towns of north-east Scotland as of equal value within #OurPreciousUnion to the gleaming metropolis.

Jacob Rees-Mogg went on to say that, although he has no time for the elected leader of the Scottish branch of his own party, he does regard the appointed Alister Jack as a more substantial figure.  Now why would that be, I wonder?  Perhaps because Jack went to the right sort of school (Glenalmond College) and speaks with the right sort of accent?  Whereas Ross actually does come across as a common or garden Jock.  He went to a state school and then studied at the Scottish Agricultural College - can you imagine? How frightful.

I can't see that attitude going down well with most Scottish Tories - because after all Ross speaks like they do and Jack doesn't.

  1. SNP Mps continue to want to replace Johnson with a less incompetent English PM thereby propping up the British establishment yet again. The SNP continues to debilitate the cause of independence.

    1. It looks like these "substantial" Tories are possibly going to pick the Margaret Thatcher-cosplaying Liz Truss to lead them next.

For once, I am in total agreement with Jacob Mogg. Ross was a lightweight incompetent when he was in Moray Council and has built on that experience since elevated to magnificence in Edinburgh and London.
In fact, "lightweight" is a compliment.

  3. from Adam Tompkins

"All of the bad days the Scottish Tories have in Holyrood are not caused by the Scottish Tories in Holyrood, they are caused by events 400 miles south. And they need to reflect on that ...

The Scottish Conservative party have a range of really important, substantive ideas to bring to the table in Scotland about economic policy and about social policy, and they are being drowned out because of the pantomime of the politics of Boris Johnson."

They may just be a solution to your problem Adam, but you seem dead against it. Just open your mind a little bit....

  4. It seems like this is now descending into open warfare between the Scot Tories and the Westminster mob. Rees-Mog in the commons today

"Ross holds office within the Conservative party. It seems to me that people who hold office ought to support the leader of the party. That is the honourable and proper thing to do."

    Get the popcorn.

  5. One thing's for sure- this is a great spectator sport.

I happened to hear a part of this on Call Kay this morning, and to her credit, she narrated the Rees-Mogg comment and followed it up with an unusually snarky comment about reminding people who the Scottish Secretary was (Mogg had implied that Ross was a lightweight but Jack was a well known heavyweight). Seems she isn't much of a Mogg fan herself.

    1. Kaye is of course part of the Labour Unionist cabal which infest the Glasgow branch office of the BBC. Other past denizens include Union Jackie Bird, Kirsty (Me and Jack McConnell) Wark, Glenn Campbell and the majority of the other presenters who have never forgiven the SNP for supplanting Labour and thus depriving them of their cozy relationship with power in Jockland. It is pretty unusual to hear them slagging off their better together Tory partners all the same, but maybe the contempt for all Jocks from the Tories is actually cutting through even their thick hides. In the words of the Bard, "Wad some pooer the giftie gie us, to see oorsels as Tories see us"! Rees-Mogg and Gove have done us a huge favour. Just hope NS acts on it now.

  6. Rees-Mogg shows a little bit more of the sneering attitude today, as while he may think DRoss is a lightweight, at least he knows who he is.

Jacob Rees-Mogg, the Commons leader, delivered a snub to another senior Tory in the devolved legislatures in the chamber earlier when he was unable to name the Welsh Conservative leader.

Labour’s Kevin Brennan asked him if he thought the leader of the Welsh Conservatives was a lightweight figure too, and if he could name him. After remaining silent for a moment, Rees-Mogg replied: “The secretary of sstate for Wales is called Simon Hart.”

  7. Now Boris is going to be snubbed. The fun and games continue.

The civil war between the Scottish Tories and Downing Street has deepened after it emerged that Boris Johnson will not be invited to address this spring’s Scottish Conservative conference – an unprecedented snub for a UK leader of the party.

    1. It's all choreographed to try and make voters imagine the Scottish Conservatives are not slavishly subservient to London.

    2. There is no civil war between the Scottish Tories and Downing Street. This is an attempt to make the Scottish Tories look almost independent and as though they have a backbone and are not in awe of their bosses in London.
Spoilers: They aren't, they haven't and they are.

  10. James, could the nasty WGD nicophantic numpty Dr Jim be referring to you when he posts:

" There are two ways for Scotland to achieve independence and the Internet Alba squealy mob don't understand either of them, instead of sending their money to Internet con men who's sole intention is to live off of it and not give a toss what they have to say to get the fools to give them it.....................not these so called bloggers and 1% fakes................." .

So ends one long sentence/mad rant.

If Jim had any self awareness/insight he could see that applies to him and WGD who bought himself a bungalow from donations and is a 100% fake.

    1. He'd damn well better not be referring to me, because the vast bulk of the funds I've raised recently have been spent on extremely expensive opinion polls. The cumulative cost of the three polls I commissioned last year was a five-figure amount (in fact it was well into five figures).

    2. Of course he's referring to you, James. He's just not man enough to put it in so many words. DrJim is probably the nastiest of the Duggers and has a particular loathing of this site.

  11. The Scottish Tories want Johnston to resign because they know he is an asset for independence. The mad liar Skier also wants Johnston to resign. So is Skier also a Tory Britnat or just a mad idiot.

  12. Sturgeon signs up to the new Union Council that is to be chaired by Johnston. The sort of thing a Unionist would do - not a person who is supposed to be setting Scotland free next year.

  13. The missing £667k ring fenced independence fund in the SNP accounts is starting to look like becoming another long running missing mystery to rival Lord Lucan and Shergar. The polis couldnae find Lucan or Shergar either.

  14. Mad Irish liar Skier thinks that Alba are a bunch of amateurs

"Aye, ‘real indy supporters’ back a vote of no confidence in Sturgeon and a vote of confidence in Johnson. It really does make me smile the how amateur those we are up against are."

The nicophant liar Skier is either a unionist troll or he really is a mad idiot.

James there is a good chance Skier is posting on your website his words under the pretence that it is my post.

What a pathetic character he is.

    2. The pathetic creature Ross Anderson continues to prattle on about people wanting the SNP to keep Johnston in 10 Downing st. Can't say I have read that anywhere. Skier, as often is the case, does not name any names. Skier just loves a lie and a misrepresentation. Sometimes he manages both in the same sentence.

    3. Definitely Skier, we need John REDACTOR MAN Swinney to investigate.

  16. WGD numpty thicko Hamish100 thinks calling somebody Irish who refers to themselves as Irish is racist. Typical of the heads in the sand nicophant numpties on WGD.

So for Hamish and the rest of the numpties, let's set the record straight, Skier isn't a mad liar because he's Irish, he's a pathetic liar because he wants to misrepresent and lie about Alba wanting the SNP to keep Johnston in Downing Street.

What pathetic characters Hamish100 and Anderson are.

    ReplyDelete
  17. What the WGD numpties Hamish100 and Anderson need to understand is, there is a difference, between Alex Salmond urging independence supporters to use the current Johnston scandal and weakness in the Tory leadership to push for and secure independence, and wanting the SNP to keep the Tories in power in Downing Street.

The nicophant numpties on WGD are too thick to understand this difference and just want to bury their heads in the sand and follow Nic to the land of neverendums and vote SNP.

  18. BEADS AND TRINKETS FOR THE SCOTS

Just as the UK gov sold Scotlands oil and gas to big business and Scotlands gets a pittance of its value the the Scotgov is now doing the same re offshore wind power. This is not the action of a government that expects Scotland to be independent any time soon. This is the action of a colonial governor.

  19. Rees-Mogg is actually showing contempt for the Tory Voting White Settlers now resident in Moray that re-elected Red Card Ross. Without the votes of those reptiles Ross loses that seat in all probability.
