Sky News are hellbent on undermining Scottish democracy - they must be challenged, and stopped

You may have seen today that SNP depute leader Keith Brown has written to Sky News chiding them for their apparent plan to exclude Nicola Sturgeon from the proposed TV debate on the Brexit deal.  Now, it's possible that Sky may argue that this is not a general election debate, we're not in a regulated general election period, and therefore all that is needed is the leading representative from the pro-deal side (Theresa May) and the leading representative from the anti-deal side (Jeremy Corbyn).  But that won't wash, for the simple reason that Sky News are right in the middle of a bizarre months-long crusade to exclude Scotland's leading party from future general election debates as well, so their plans for the Brexit debate are clearly fuelled by exactly the same Anglocentric mindset.

Not that they're being upfront about their desire to exclude the SNP, of course - they're simply badgering viewers to sign an innocuous-sounding petition to "make leaders' debates happen".  But the very few explanatory words at the top of the petition set out exactly what Sky's definition of a "debate" is, and it's nothing short of extraordinary.

"Genuine leaders' debates took place in 2010, but in the next two elections didn't happen."

What?  What?  What?  The "genuine debates" in 2010 excluded the SNP, Plaid Cymru, UKIP and the Greens.  Whereas in 2015 there was an immaculately inclusive debate on ITV that included the leaders of all of those parties, alongside the leaders of the Conservatives, Labour and the Liberal Democrats.  According to Sky that was not a "genuine debate".  Why?  Presumably because the Jocks and the Taffies were cluttering up the set and making it hard for viewers to concentrate on the "real choice" between the terribly important London-based parties, who are terribly important because they're based in London.

Make no mistake - Sky's agenda is to destroy Scotland's political distinctiveness and to impose a one-size-fits-all London model on the entire UK.  They must be stopped.

  1. Strange how most of the Scottish Nat sis have left the debating chamber when the 100th Anniversary of the RAF is being debated. Seems the Nat sis would have preferred the luftwaffe to have prevailed as much as they want Germany to dominate Europe today.

    2. Do you know which scottish "journalist this is?

      On another topic. Given that T May. D Mundell, R Davidson and all of their little elves campaigned for a remain vote can you or anyone else explain May's constant attacks on the SNP for wanting to sign up to the CFP?

      They all campaigned for Scotland as part of the UK to remain in the CFP so why are our brave defenders of truth (D Leask among them) allowing them to get away with such bare-faced hypocrisy?

    "Should another independence referendum come, and I think it will, I’m not sure what I’ll say. Or what anybody will."

    Another Big Yin / Murray Foote there. Tory in this case. Brexit is bad enough for him, before we get to the English nationalists selling out the Scots (inc. brexit voting) fishermen.

    English nationalism is breaking the union. If you don't believe me, ask the unionist DUP and Moray fishermen.

    When you've got the son of Thatcher's Jockland enforcer hovering his pencil over 'Yes' on an iref ballot, you know the union is in serious trouble.

  9. As for Sky. Seems pro-UK break-up to me.

    I mean why else would it try to pee off half of Scotland (at least)?

    If you wanted to hold the UK together, you'd back being as inclusive as possible when it comes to Scots and Scottish democracy in a UK context. Obviously.

    Oh and to understand the feeling of betrayal that Scots and N. Irish unionists feel right now. Well, they're feeling very similar to Scot nats about London. Aye.

  11. Skier, I don't think Sky is pro-UK breakup in any way shape or form. I think they're very pro maximising their UK profits any way shape or form, and that's achieved easiest by playing up to the concept of English exceptionalism which is indifferent to Scotland's presence in the "Union", or even our continued existence.

    1. Sure, I was speaking somewhat tongue in cheek.

      However, Sky are encouraging the break up of the UK. That might not be the intent, but it's the result. The BBC are doing the same. The blame for low trust ratings certainly isn't the fault of audiences!

      For Sky it's mainly for profit reasons as you say.

Another excellent article/blogg by James Kelly hitting hard at who needs hit, are we a nation or are we just a region of England I think I am a Scotsman belonging to the Scottish nation residing in my country of Scotland. Just wondering is "SKY" trying to push us too far?Are they doing this on orders from"The Establishment" or to try and wake up those sleeping Scots and make them think?

  14. 'Brexit is not really British. It is English, and always has been, and merely uses the wrong flag.'

    Hugo Rifkind.

    ----

    Which is why it's breaking the UK. It might have been 'Loyal Brits' in Scotland who were the main Leave voting group, but in England, the British identifiers voted Remain by nearly 2/3. It was the English that voted Leave.

    England:
    English = Leave
    British = Remain

    Scotland:
    British = Leave
    Scottish = Remain

    This is why the DUP and Moray fishermen are being sold down the river. Their union love is not requited. The English brexiters couldn't give a crap what happens to them; the care only for their own Jerusalem.

    Anyone with even an ounce of sense should be able to understand from that vote split that unionism is very badly divided. Mundell squeaking for the nth time he might quit while the DUP get ready to abandon their coalition with the 'English Conservative and Irish Reunification Party' is it all coming tumbling down as a result.
