HS2 which is currently on course to cost £50 billion for a slightly faster train service than the current one between London and Birmingham, has spent £78 million in one year on consultants. The charlatans in suits have been tasked with finding out how HS2 managed to squander so much public money. You couldn’t make this up.

In a token gesture to make it look like the beneficiary of the project would be Birmingham, (it ain’t) they moved the offices to the West Midlands. London based management who refused to endure the horrors of relocating to … er … Birmingham, were offered compensation packages. A HoC committee looking into this found that managers who chose voluntarily redundancy were given £1 million in excess of the statutory minimum in severance payments.
Nae prizes for guessing where the CON-sultants who received the latest tranche of £78 million were based.

Farage is French toast. The Sunday Times’ latest revelations about the oleaginous grifter should sink Farage for ever. They reveal that Farage received seven figure benefits in kind from Crypto gambler and convicted fraudster George Cottrell without declaring it to the HoC authorities.
ReplyDeleteThis comes on top of the revelations about the £5 million “gift” (read bribe) from Crypto King, Christopher Harborne. Scratch the surface of Farage (and Tice’s) “man of the people” schtick and Crypto conmen are all too readily apparent. Harborne, Ben Delo, and now George Cottrell. Reform UK is a Trojan horse for financial speculators from the City of London.
Of course, The Times turning on Farage just means that 95 year old Rupert Murdoch is throwing his weight behind Rupert Lowe’s Restore Britain.
England and the UK’s misfortune is Scotland’s opportunity.

The only outcome I would confidently predict is the lowest turnout for a Westminster by-election in history.
For an outside bet, you could consider an anti-corruption campaigner with some public profile to dig their white suit out the wardrobe and run as an independent as per Martin Bell back in 1997. Possibly a consumer rights campaigner with a connection to the BBC.

Trump is in Türkiye attending a major NATO summit. As is Zelensky despite Ukraine not being a member of NATO.
Every Patriot and THAAD interceptor that rolls off the production line is precious. Everyone is clamouring to replace their stocks diminished by recent events.
Trump will be under pressure to send any available interceptors to Kyiv. Britain, Germany, France, Poland, Türkiye (for different reasons), Canada and the Baltic States will be lobbying for that outcome.
Israel will want all new interceptors sent to the Middle East.
Trump probably wants the same outcome. He’s given up on Ukraine and he’s probably correct to do so.
Perhaps the attacks on the tankers didn’t happen at all. If that sounds improbable, read up on the Gulf of Tonkin incident.
