The National overplays the threat to the Barnet Formula. Burnham’s main beef are the subsidies that decade after decade flow to the SE of England.
ReplyDeleteBest of luck with that Mr B. Remember Boris Johnson and his “Levelling up”? Within weeks his Chancellor, Rishi Sunak was caught on camera phone telling his wealthy constituents in the SE of England that the subsidies would keep flowing in a SE ward direction just as they always had since Thatcher came to power (and probably before).
HS2 is a case in point. It required an act of Parliament, and it was sold on the false premise that it would help rejuvenate “the North” (whatever that is?).
Even the most perfunctory examination would have shown HS2 to be the opposite to what it said on the tin. Were the citizens of London going to use the high speed rail connection to flock to the world famous theatre district of Birmingham to spend their ill gotten gains? Were they going to visit the museums, art galleries and concert venues of Birmingham? Of course not, HS2 was just another means of accelerating the leaching of the life blood of everywhere that wasn’t the SE of England.
Rishi Sunak didn’t (and doesn’t) have any constituents in the SE of England. He’s the MP for Richmond in North Yorkshire.

ReplyDeleteBut one of the candidates being floated as Burnham's chancellor is Ed Miliband. To put him in charge of dismantling the Barnett formula...!
His people are briefing the Guardian that his chancellor will be someone right wing. His chief of staff already is. The signs are pointing to a much more Starmerite change than hope and hype believed.

ReplyDeleteAh think Mr McManus is going to chuck a spanner in the works? He seems pretty determined to get Nicola into court, under oath and questioned by a competent KC. It's going to expose the corruption of our legal system not least.
ReplyDeleteThis is hanging over the Indy cause. In the round it may be best to clean house and take all the hits at once? Just get it out the way quickly and rebuild. Labour under Burnham are going to be a disaster, but it will take say 18 months for that to manifest.
If the SNP clean house, charge and prosecute Strugeon and others quickly then we get it over and done with, then take advantage of Burnham's coming disaster.
You clearly want to go after Strugeon, but do not say what for. She is out, her legacy being one of incompetence and untruths. She has one simple question to answer. Why did she block inquiry into the SNP finances, when a number of senior members and office holders had raised legitimate and founded concerns? That’s it. One simple question based on an incontrovertible fact. Until she answers that she remains implicated. Your move N S.
DeleteI read that article in The National on wednesday 24th June and it manages to both be oversensationalised and at the same time both fails to explain the realities of the division of expenditure within the UK or examine the political choices that face prospective new PM Andy Burnham or even analyse the simplistic soundbytes from Scottish MSPs.

I have no doubt that it would have been better it it had been written by Kathleen Nutt.
The British Labour party must be warming up the Jocks for some sort of drubbing because the BBC has had talk of Labour Party 'federalism' and 'Devo Max' on 2 of the 'Scotcast shows for this week.
Beware politicians promising 'Improvements'. ;-(
