For one post only: a KC amnesty

Someone suggested yesterday that I should start publishing KC's comments again, because it would boost the overall posting rate by motivating others to "take him down".  Believe it or not, KC does still attempt to post here multiple times a day, even though essentially he now has an audience of just one (me).  Quite where such dedication and spare time comes from is one of the great mysteries of the modern world.

Just to demonstrate to yesterday's poster why allowing KC to post again would be a terrible idea in the long run, I'm going to offer an amnesty for this post only.  Any comments from KC on this specific post will be published, unless it's one of his occasional sweary posts or something that would cause legal problems.  Spoiler alert: any comments he makes will almost certainly be about one of the following -

a) "confirmed sightings of Nessie"
b) "a de facto referendum would be good but I'd prefer a plebiscite election LOL"
c) "Give this independence nonsense up you fools!!!!"
d) "great to see support for independence creeping above 10%"
e) "it must be true that independence support is above 50% because this is a GOLD STANDARD POLLSTER"

* * *

In other news, my morning didn't go to plan (to put it mildly) so here I am sitting on a selection of trams and trolley buses in the Riverside Museum instead.

  1. Regarding the Gold Standard pollster, it was disappointing to see the last Ipsos poll put No ahead(albeit by just a point).

    1. But you're normally "encouraged" if Yes are above 30%?

    2. In all seriousness, it’s concerning to see almost every poll put the pro indy/pro union split at roughly 40/60. And of course that assumes all Green voters are independence supporters, which I very much doubt.

    3. "In all seriousness" is like the bloke from Allo Allo donning a fake moustache and whispering "It is I, Leclerc!"

As you know, one of the main reasons Yes is currently in the lead is because many Labour and Reform supporters back independence.

    4. The problem I have is, Swinney clearly stated a vote for the SNP would be a vote for independence. Why would any serious independence supporter vote Labour or Reform? Surely it was a no brainier to vote SNP.

    6. Anon@1:32pm,
Any more polls like that and Ipsos will be in danger of losing their “gold standard “ tag.

  2. A wee teaser for all you Scot Goes Poppers this Thursday afternoon.

What do someone who thinks Scotland will be an independent country by the turn of the next century and a Nessie hunter have in common?

If nobody’s cracked it by aboot teatime I’ll be back wi the answer.

  3. How safe is SNP in the 18.6.2026 by election in Arbroath etc.?

I’m not even sure who main challenger will be - Reform, Tories & Labour can all make a claim for that mantle. Badly split Unionist vote incoming?

    1. With the Unionist vote now basically split 4 ways, rather than the traditional 3, it should make it easier for the SNP. That’s why it was so desperately disappointing the SNP didn’t get an overall majority at the Holyrood election.

    2. An elaborate build-up to that punchline, KC.

    3. Unionist vote likely "only" split 3 ways in that seat, since LibDems only really have foothold in one small party of the constituency: namely The Ferry ward of Dundee. LibDem vote in other (covered) parts of Dundee is tiny, as it is in the countryside up to Arbroath and in that town as well.

  4. Like everyone else Im familiar with a de facto referendum, but what on earth is a plebiscite election? I take it KC’s taking the p*** with that!

    ReplyDelete
  5. Excuse my ignorance, but what exactly is a “plebiscite “ election?
Is it what the guy on the previous thread was suggesting? ie a referendum to ask the Scottish people if they want an independence referendum?

    1. You're not ignorant, KC, you're merely transparent.

    1. There is someone on the periphery with a few others who have made their living by knocking the snp in the false hope someone might follow him. A bit like the ex FM McLeish on we need federalism. Even the Lib Dem’s have gave up on that.

  7. The Riverside museum is great, as is the Glenlee. For anyone else who is cash strapped like me, look out for for Doors Open Days where a lot of places are FREEEEE. Anyways:

    Backsliding?

' Speaking to the Press Association on Thursday, the First Minister said: “I intend to bring forward a motion to Parliament on Tuesday, following a statement, subject to the agreement of the parliamentary authorities, about the Government’s priorities, to give Parliament the opportunity to say what I believe it will say, because there is the largest number of independence supporting MSPs in the Scottish Parliament, that the constitutional future of Scotland should be decided by a referendum, delivered through a section 30 order involving a transfer of powers.
“So we will put that to Parliament on Tuesday, subject to the agreement of the parliamentary authorities, to enable us to have that choice.” '

    Compare that to:

    https://www.snp.org/first-minister-john-swinneys-speech-on-the-snps-plan-for-the-first-100-days-of-the-next-parliament/

"So I can confirm today that on the first sitting day after the appointment of the new government, we will bring forward a vote of the Scottish Parliament to approve the development of a Section 30 to give Scotland the power to hold an independence referendum."

    specifically:

    "... to approve the development of a Section 30 ..." (27th April - active)

    versus:

    "... delivered through a section 30 order involving a transfer of powers ..." (21st May - passive)

Whatever you think about a "Section 30", somebody needs to hold Swinney to account over what he promised before the election, to what he is doing AFTER. From the looks of it he may be weaseling out. Too many people with their own agendas - so Swinney escapes? Only Greer at the moment has any clue ...

So what is it John Boy? The Scottish Parliament to develop a Section 30 - or some sort of pathetic begging of Westminster to do it? There IS a big difference.

    1. May I suggest you start doing something worthwhile with your time, rather than obsess over something that ain’t ever going to happen ie independence.
You had your referendum in 2014, get over it and move on!

    4. So Yesindyref2, what’s your timeframe for independence? What do you think is realistic?

      Delete
    5. Well, Swinney said the referendum could be in 2028, so we could be Independent and purdy, down and dirty, all by 2030.

    6. Yesindyref2,
I agree we could be independent by 2030.

  8. "Swinney accused of 'dividing' Scotland over Sinn Féin"

No. But he could divide Scotland over hi refusal to speak to Reform UK, a legal party, with representatives elected by normal people in Scotland, some of whom (the voters) many of us will know in every day life, supermarket, shops, buses, work, business - even if we don't actually know it.

THAT is divisive as it fails to recognise the use by these voters of their Universal Suffrage right to vote (or some such expression!).

Plus probably 30% of them will vote YES.

  12. So my MSP Kenneth Gibson is already making waves:

    https://archive.is/szTT5

"Interventions should be short and sharp, of course, not many speeches in themselves".

Good. However, replies by the FM should be replies to the question, not attacks on the questionner or his or her party. It's one of the reasons I think the turnout was so low this election - Holyrood has become mini Westminster, not the attempt at concensus I, and millions of others voted for. Sadly it was Sturgeon started this constantly confrontational Holyrood, and I hope Gibson puts a stop to it. It's not good for promoting Independence: "Vote YES and get anither nasty Westminster without integrity instead".

Integrity used to be a characteristic Scottish trait. Bring it on.
