"My Alba Torment" by Chris McEleny - the man they call Primus admits he may be on his way out of the Alba Party after his humiliating 4-1 margin of defeat in the depute leadership election

"I used to know an ancient remedy for mad dogs.  I must look it up some time..."

- Tom Baker in the Doctor Who story 'The Keeper of Traken'

I wasn't organised enough to find the video feed for the Alba leadership announcement this morning, but I gather from those who watched it that Chris McEleny started his concession speech by saying that he thought it might be the last time he ever spoke from an Alba podium, because he expects the next step to be his suspension from the party.  (If you want to know what the suspension email is likely to look like, Chris, I can show you mine, although come to think of it that's already in your "Sent" folder, isn't it?!)

Is he trying reverse psychology here?  Does he think predicting it will make it less likely to happen?  I'm not sure that's right, because he's put MacAskill in a position where he'll look weak if he doesn't see it through.

One thing you can be sure of - if McEleny thinks his days in Alba might be numbered, he'll have a back-up plan for a political future outside of Alba.  He's convinced his family that he's a future First Minister, so he's not going to throw in the towel now.  The big question is whether Ash Regan will follow him to whatever his next destination is.  I suspect she may well do given her inexplicable loyalty to the guy.

UPDATE: McEleny has written a novel-length tweet lambasting MacAskill in great detail.  That, I would suggest, guarantees his departure from the party and makes it very hard for Ash Regan to stay unless she distances herself from him.  There are several parts of the email that will raise eyebrows, not least his complaint that MacAskill took action "he had no constitutional authority to do" - something that McEleny did umpteen times himself, for example by removing me from my elected position on the Constitution Review Group.

  2. McEleny’s in his statement says “.. Alex Salmond, Alba activists, I and others have built into a position of being within touching distance of electoral success. ” This is so delusional. Now that his pal Regan has failed twice to be a leader will she form a new party calling IFS and others to support her in her selfless quest to be re-elected!

Who are these people “really working for independence.” It can’t be Swinney or the SNP they declared nothing is happening on independence for 6 more years. That will make 17 years since the 2014 referendum. A poster laughingly says we should not rush it.

It used to be the unionists who said there shouldn’t be another referendum until after 20 years. Now it is the SNP.

    1. Without Ash, Alba has what, a turncoat councillor here or there?

Ash's forthcoming splinter will be entitled to more media coverage than Alba now. She knows that. And Kenny does too…

    2. Oh I meant more Chris leaving and potentially Ash staying.

    3. Has Ash any friends in the party besides (amateur puppetmaster) Chris?

It's got to be galling to lose two leadership elections (let alone in two different parties) so close together. How is she meant to work with the party that refused her but still needs her prominence? She's literally their only elected parliamentarian. If she goes, they're as inconsequential as the Scottish Libertarians or the Natural Law Party.

Besides, even Ash must have the sense to realise she's not winning re-election under the Alba banner. I doubt she'd have much luck running as a breakaway either, but it just might soothe her ego.

The one sure way she's staying in Holyrood is with Farage's blessing. But does he even know she exists?

      Delete
    4. Isn’t Regan a turncoat MSP.

      Delete
    5. Of course she is. Alba hasn't ever won a single elected candidate, at any level of government, and won't ever at this rate.

But a turncoat MSP is a bit more likely to get a spot on the news than a turncoat Local Councillor.

  4. Just read his statement on X. Whoops.

Remaining Alba members may see much of their subs spent on legal fees taken in defence of that party, rather than on any positive Indy agenda. Why stay? There are far, far better causes to support, eg local charities, with your hard earned cash. Alba is kaput anyway, your subs won’t change that.

  9. With this election over it gives Alba a chance to get itself back on track as a pro-indy party. Some members might use it as an anti-SNP vehicle, but the leadership and the office-bearers should put that behind them.

In a similar vein it's time some of the more extreme elements of the SNP stopped their hysterical attacks on Alba and got on with supporting Independence - and seeing off some of the obvious Unionist trolls who are often allowed to roam forums unchallenged.

Independence needs its different Independence supporting parties because we're all different, united by only one common cause - Independence. Alba may need a time in peace to heal its wounds.

And no, for the moronic Anon trolls, I do not belong to any party.

    1. I agree with your sentiment, yi2. And like you I’m not in any party.

I really do think Alba's bust, though.

It would be a very healthy thing indeed for the independence movement to have more than one electorally viable party, but I doubt we do. Alba was making the "he's dead, Jim" flatline noise even when Eck was alive and well and brought the spotlight. It has only ever failed miserably on every occasion it's met the voters. What could turn all that around?

I’m a grumpy bastard when it comes to the SNP, which is led by the wrong people, with plenty more wrong ones lined up behind them. I don't think they want independence any more than Labour wants to abolish the House of Lords and Trident. Goodness knows how much work the SNP needs to turn that back around.

But a viable alternative? Once upon, I always voted Green. Let's just say they lost me along with Andy Wightman.

      Delete
    2. If McAskill and Regan can't get along and get their act together, then Alba are lost. Looks like they need a cleanout though, one they both support.

Greens need to lose their leadership, and Greer.

The biggest thing that would help: Push for that constitutional convention to take place. Get all sides of the Yes movement in a room together the discuss the best path forward.

Get certain people to move on from the: 'Just shut up and vote SNP otherwise you're helping the unionists you moronic imbeciles' approach.

They have the best brand in the world—save the planet!—a good chunk of the vote that guarantees them seats in Holyrood, and the perfect political landscape where they alone appeal to the pro-independence half of the people.

But then they get absolutely covered, head to toe, like a pair of toddlers the moment they're in government!

And that's not even getting started on their fixation on every bloody w**e issue at the cost of the environment. Gah!
