Analysis of the SNP's two spectacular by-election wins in Glasgow

Just a quick note to let you know I have an analysis piece at The National about yesterday's two local by-elections in Glasgow, both of which produced pretty spectacular wins for the SNP.  The article is accompanied by a photo of John Swinney in a novelty hat, so please do brace yourselves.  You can read it HERE.

  3. Reform did THAT differently in two by-elections in the same city on the same day? That's… odd.

Were there sex scandal rumours about the candidate in Southside or something? A tactic which might be especially effective against them, as their candidates are all nameless randos and their voters are used to believing conspiracy theories.

    2. Southside is a bit different from other parts of Glasgow - the Greens do well here in a way they don’t in the part of Glasgow I grew up in, which borders this part of the Southside - I hope the reform vote stays low here.

  8. Does anyone on this even remotely want Scottish Independence, from what I see it is just a pile of sniping at each other. Until we actually unite we are making it impossible for OURSELVES to make Scotland a country again and not one controlled by a foreign robber, Republic of Ireland got it right so why can’t the Scots. I get that no one will ever agree on everything, but for F**k sake let’s get our bloody act together, we are playing in to the hands of Westminster’s divide and conquer and at this very moment with Tory and now ToryLabour razor cuts including ramping up their theft of even more of our natural resources really we need to get it together for our Independence just like every other normal country!!!

      What 'prize'?

Independence is not a 'prize' to be won like you would in a game of bingo.

When independence is the unattainable goal, the mystical guiding star, and the vital pressing thing we need immediately but can’t be bothered lifting a finger to do a damn thing about, is it any surprise the party’s sagging?

    6. Issue is when a lot of people tend to say: We all need to unite. They don't mean that all sides of the Yes movement should get in a room together, hash out differences and agree on a united strategy... they mean that everyone needs to unite behind the SNP (despite the fact most of us were previously and that led nowhere).

      Delete

Well I DO mean that! And as for the sarky comment about looking isn't doing, well duh! Self determination a human right rather than a prize, but eyes on the human right doesn't really cut it as a phrase.

Maybe instead of parsing well kent phrases, folk could actually try doing their bit to bring independence closer. Just a thought!

  9. To follow on from my last statement….THIS IS NOT A JOKE…..UNITE WE CONQUER…….DIVIDE NOTHING CHANGES…..and by f**k don’t the unionists just know it!!!

    1. "Unite!" ... but only on your terms. Eh, pal?

      Delete
    2. I think it’s more on the general terms. Most folk can unite on what they agree on broadly within the movement - not everyone - but most and we need to build on that. In 2014 you had groups that disagreed on plenty working together for independence without creating creating conspiracy theories and lies about each other which would have only strengthened the unionist chances. I don’t think we’ll
ever return to that degree of discipline - but we can as a movement distance ourselves from the most toxic voices and just get on with it. Wings Over Scotland for example he’s too damaged by hate and bitterness to ever do anything for independence again - so we distance ourselves and move forward. Within the SNP you have a good mix and new faces coming in. I hope Forbes pushes for the A9 to be prioritised but also hope we push forward with progressive policies as well, so we don’t alienate younger voters.

    6. Anon at 9.14. Good post. Considering what has gone on it’s amazing that SNP still has the level of support it does. It shows the passion people have for Indy. The truly nasty divisive brigade on here are mostly WOS mouth frothers. Some of them are long term unionist trolls. Some are nominally Indy supporters but live in a bubble of ignorance and stupidity. They are in overdrive right now because they have all been exposed as liars and fantasists by the recent announcements about NS. Nothing any of them say can be believed. I have commented in the past about the unintentional benefit of WOS. It is a magnet for the elements I want nowhere near the Indy movement. Long may it continue. Now, pressure on our MSPs and MPs. Holyrood 2026 is pivotal. If we don’t get a majority we are screwed for at least the next two parliamentary terms and the unionist parties will devote a lot of time to dismantling Indy. They have directly told us they intend doing so, and the tories had started the process with the Internal Markets Act and the award of direct funding in areas where power is supposedly devolved. I am not going to respond to the usual suspects. It’s not worth the effort.

The truth is you want Murrell to plead guilty so that the truth is hidden and Sturgeon is not called to court.
You should remember that the police did not “clear Sturgeon “ it was COPFS a unionist organisation headed by the unionist Dorothy Bain appointed by Sturgeon.

Meanwhile Swinney , who Bain reports to, has declared nothing will happen on Scottish independence for the next 6 years at least. Well done you and all the others like you - sure you are not a unionist because if you are not you are pretty stupid.

I seriously worry for those idiots, as they fling more and more utterly ridiculous 'reasons' not to accept that the Police Scotland-run Operation Branchform HAS NOW FINISHED (as the Police themselves have confirmed) without ANY criminal wrongdoing on Sturgeon's part being found.

The Yes Movement and Scotland in general is now moving on from this and even the heavily Yoon-Biased MSM will also do so, because their MAIN Target has gone.

My guess is, though, that those aforementioned Wingnuts/Albaists will STILL be wittering-on about this on Wings and on here, long after it has fallen off the radar for everyone else.

It will eat away at them, especially Campbell, who I fully expect to have another one of his wee temper tantrums and encourage Yessers to either not vote ever again, or cast their ballots for Reform UK to 'cleanse' Scotland.

    1. Francis. Did you take that question to Sturgeon when she continually on national TV (including Covid briefings) said that Salmond was guilty even though a jury listened to the evidence and acquitted him. You didn’t did you because you are a sychophant.

Sturgeon on the other hand got COPFS to tell the Police to stop. Still no info on what the Police found out about Sturgeon/Beattie and passed on to COPFS. A trial by jury would have been the just way but the Sturgeon appointed Lord Advocate returned the favour as a fellow unionist.
Sturgeon/Beattie signed off the accounts that long standing SNP auditors declined to continue having a professional arrangement with the SNP. After a lengthy search new auditors qualified the accounts by saying documentation relating to donations was missing.

      Delete
    2. David Francis says “absolute bedrock and foundation of any proper legal system” - that’s not Scotland. When the person in charge of prosecutions, the Lord Advocate , is also a member of the Scottish Government a clear conflict of interest arises. Especially when the Police are investigating a member of the same government as the Lord Advocate, never mind the person who appointed the Lord Advocate.

So David Francis your question falls at the first hurdle.

    14. David Francis I never compared Sturgeon to Hitler or Stalin. The point I was making seems to be beyond your comprehension. In Sturgeon’s defence I am not aware she has killed anyone so to say what you posted is really daft. Read it again and think. It’s about humans ability to admire someone even though the evidence suggests otherwise. If you still can’t understand I suggest you use that delete function once again.

I also advise you to use the delete button more often regarding your posts as a lot of them paint a very negative picture of your character.

    15. He's getting more extreme the more he is challenged on the nonsense he posts. No doubt he'll soon revert to his 'anonymous' persona to back himself up and tell us all how insightful he is. The guy is an absolute clown.

    16. Garbage

You deliberately referenced Hitler and Stalin in response to a discussion purely about Sturgeon.

The mere fact that you even did that, indicates just what a f#cking SLUG you really are.

Now..........take your demented ramblings and 'advice' somewhere else.

I will not lower myself to converse with Slime like you, any further.

    17. Sadly, David just cannot grasp the point I was making. It’s about the people who worship politicians. Not the politicians themselves. Not the brightest spark is the SNPs David Francis.

Look at all the people who still worship Boris Johnston despite all the evidence that he should be hated by all and sundry due to his crass, empathy free handling of Covid. Poor David is inflicted with such a worship of Sturgeon that he cannot even think clearly.

    18. Dave's standard response when he has lost the argument is to ignore the poster in future (see above about Sturgeon's view on Salmond's innocence). He's not only a fool but a coward, albeit a long-winded one.

  25. Nicola Sturgeon’s husband attended court in Edinburgh where he was formally charged with embezzlement, made no plea, and was released on bail.

Some posters on SGP will need regular reminding of this fact. especially the anon who continually posted it was all over and there would be NO prosecutions. Plenty egg on this anon’s face.

  26. Not one anon or David Francis has anything to say about it will now be a minimum of 16 years of the SNP doing NOTHING about Scottish independence even though independence has polled at 50% for a long time now. These people actually claim to be independence supporters. It must be in a second life when they rise again from the dead because it won't be any time soon.

  27. I bet Nicola and Val didn’t tell this joke at the Comedy Club.

After a thorough investigation the Police concluded that Sturgeon and McDermid spent their share of the loot on pies and cakes and therefore successfully disposed of the incriminating evidence. No further action will be taken by the Police.

  29. Talking about Nicola Sturgeon's future - on my recent travels and also attending my local SNP Meetings, it is very obvious that the younger generations of SNP Members and wider Yessers STILL consider Sturgeon as their favoured political figure.

They admire the steadying influence of Swinney, but their favourite, by far, is still her.

I can see Sturgeon being very useful to both the Party and Wider Movement in respect of our young people, because she still has the cut-through that other politicians seem to lack with that cohort - and that cohort is ESSENTIAL to both entities

She is also very good in the Media World of chat shows etc......and that is another area she would be an asset to us.

Compared to the Tenth Rate Dross available from Alba, she would be a far, far better bet.

  30. Wee nightcap before retiring -

As even 'BBC Shortbread' reminded us only last week - "Sturgeon still remains the Biggest Name in Scottish Politics".

That also remains the case Internationally.

Irrespective of what a few complete nonentities on here might 'think', Sturgeon is still an EXTREMELY useful asset for both the SNP and wider Yes Movement.

I fully anticipate that fact being utilised in the next 12 months or so - and will happily sit back and watch the 'usual suspects' on SGP and elsewhere being more and more sidelined and ignored, as the worthless wastes of space they really are.

    Nite, folks.

Sturgeon is an asset alright David but for the British state.

    4. Nicola Sturgeon - what a roaster - one minute she is like the female version of Manuel from Barcelona in Fawlty Towers “ I know nothing” next minute she can recall enough to write a book of memoirs. Will she recall in her book seeing the luxury Jaguar car or the luxury motor home sitting in driveways? If so, did she think the SNP ( himself) must be paying him too much dosh.

    5. Natalie McGarry SNP MP got a 20 months jail sentence in 2022 for embezzling £25,000 of yes money. £600,000 has gone missing this time and the Leader of the Party at the time and the Treasurer at the time are in the clear. No criminal responsibility perhaps, but they still carry a responsibility due to the positions held and their signing off the accounts.
If Murrell pleads guilty or is found guilty and gets a much lighter sentence eg suspended sentence then a comparison with the McGarry sentence will raise a number of questions.

  32. It’s interesting to get a broader picture of the liar brigade. Misogyny, homophobia and racism are coming through in comments here as well as the rage and anger at being outed as liars and fantasists. The overtures made by Alba to Reform and Trump are stating to fall into place. Hopefully the Scottish electorate do not fall for their divisive rhetoric, their lies and their hate. Nasty people.

  33. For all the deserved criticism IFS has received in here, he has sensibly decided to retire gracefully from posting. It’s understandable. Outed as a liar and a fantasist. Regrettably his wee band of helpers are too stupid to understand they have been similarly outed, and are posting more lies and disinformation. Sad wee people.
