Let's get the awkwardness out of the way - I have a new title

Not everything in life makes sense, and one example is that Scottish political bloggers seem to be judged by their clerical titles, or lack thereof.  Stuart Campbell has styled himself a "Reverend" since entering the fray a decade ago, and although he's always insisted that's a genuine title, he's nevertheless been coy about how he acquired it.  A Google search suggests the answer may be the "Universal Life Church", which bills itself as "the world's leading online church" (whatever that means), and which allows anyone to be ordained as a priest within minutes simply by filling in a form.  No fee is even required.

The suggestion that Campbell's title comes from this rather dubious source was made several years ago by a well-known Brit Nat troublemaker.  But I can't find anything that contradicts it, and it has the ring of truth to it, because it's hard to think of any other religious denomination that wouldn't have cast Campbell out of the priesthood long before now due to his repeated foul-mouthed tirades.  The Universal Life Church has no standing whatever in the UK, but it does have limited recognition in the US, and there are a few US states that for some reason even recognise marriages conducted by its "Reverends".  So if you want to live in wedded bliss but only in Texas or South Carolina, Stu is your man.

Naturally I couldn't allow myself to be outdone by this, so I had a look to see if the Universal Life Church also offer titles that outrank a Reverend, such as Bishop, Cardinal or Pope.  I couldn't see any sign that they do, so I looked elsewhere.  There actually are plenty of "online churches" out there that offer an array of ranks, but most of them have no legal standing anywhere in the world.  What I was looking for was a church that allows its clergy to officiate at legally recognised weddings, even if only within a very limited jurisdiction.

As is often the case in situations like this, the answer was to be found in the South Pacific.  There is a small church, consisting of little more than a webpage, called the Pirate Mercator Communion.  It nominally worships the sea, and it seems to have a cosy financial arrangement with the government of the Cook Islands.  Anyone it ordains can indeed conduct weddings, but only in the Cook Islands.  Crucially it also allows anyone to become a Bishop for a nominal fee of 17 New Zealand dollars.

Reader, the deed is already done.  On Wednesday, I was ordained as a priest (by email) and on Thursday I was consecrated as a Bishop (by Zoom call, but it only took three minutes).  The fantastic thing is that I was able to select my own Bishopric, and although most of Scotland had already been nabbed, I was able to put together a distinctly squiggly looking and non-contiguous Bishopric consisting of Speyside, Tranent, Yetts o' Muckhart, Milngavie and approximately five-eighths of Benbecula.

I am advised that the correct form of address for a Bishop is "Your Excellency" or "Your Grace".  Suck it up, Stu.

  3. Your Grace congratulations on your appointment. Does that mean you will be preaching forgiveness and the like because I find it very hard to forgive the trolls that frequent your blog. The urge to tell some of them like H ( just a current example) to just f**k right off can be overwhelming at times. Your ministries will be most welcome on how to become a more saintly poster.

With regards to the rev on the other blog. I do remember him saying when being interviewed by Salmond it was just to distinguish himself from all the other Stuart Campbell's. As I have a nephew with that name I did see his point at the time. Bishop James Kelly would work for you as well in that respect as there are a few James Kellys about.

To finish off with a question, have you bought any new bishop related gear for April Fools day?

  4. I’m afraid I cannot tolerate this. I am filing a Thought/Hate Crime report to the Polis against today's date, so called "April 1st", for direct and grievous taunting of those who self-ID as Fools.

Being a Fool in modern Scotland is an unending bane. Society already abuses us, refusing to celebrate our gullibility but taunting us for our very nature instead. If this background prejudice weren't enough, then there's even a day on the calendar set aside for Mass Targeting of our group! Let me ask you: would this stand if we was black? April Fools Day is no such thing, it is Crystalnacht!

No, I cannot abide this any longer. I am starting a campaign to remove April "1" from the calendar forever, for the good of all my Foolish brothers and sisters worldwide. Thank you for your support. We can all agree, love Humza.

    1. This was presumably funny in your head. Perhaps you need to go away and read the legislation, and then come back and explain what is wrong with it, by reference to relevant sections. And look up the word consolidate. The main issue with this Act is the poor standard of drafting. Inconsistencies in Sections 1 and 2 will keep criminal lawyers busy for some time, but only if the P F ever decides to prosecute. You ought to be concerned at the removal of the requirement for corroboration of a core piece of evidence, not the type of behaviour liable to prosecution. Posts to this forum used to be informed and of a high standard. The Bishop appears to have been taken hostage by a group of muppets and cretins. Such a shame.

However if you are not given a seat in the House of Lords as a Bishop like Church of England I would consider this to be a flagrant act of contempt and disrespect for your Bishopric and I intend taking this up with the appropriate authority Laird lay Spoof.

  10. I'm pretty sure Rev Campbell got his title from RPG - Role Playing Games. Presumably as a cleric who has some powers like healing, conversion and apart from a sword, maybe even offence religious somethings. Usually not strong in hit points. The character gets stronger as it goes up through the levels. Ummmm, not that I'd know :-)

  11. Like IFS, I always understood he did it to differentiate himself from other Stuart Campbells on twitter. I'd no idea he'd gone to the bother of a bogus 'ordination'. (Although I believe that's how Ian Paisley got his title from the splendidly named Bob Jones Bible Belt University -who wouldn't trust a reverend from there!)

I'm pretty sure he's an atheist or at least agnostic but he does like to wind people up and a foul-mouthed 'reverend' on twitter would certainly do that.

  12. The three big parties (in terms of size ) candidates in my constituency will be:

    Labour - Blair McDougall
    Tory - Sandesh Gulhane
    SNP - Kirsten Oswald

Do I want any of them to be my MP? No. Do I have any respect for any of them? No. Will it make any difference to my life who gets to be voted as my MP? No. Scotland is a colony (some may say a de facto colony) and as long as that is the case the big decisions will be taken in Westminster and Scotland's resources will be used to enrich the South of England.

The Labour guy ran the Better Togther campaign in 2014- can't stand him.
The Tory guy is a doctor who already is an MSP and now wants two political jobs. Instead of complaining about the NHS he should get back to doctoring. He is a Tory nothing to like about him.
The SNP woman is a member of Sturgeon's gang. When I wrote to her asking her about the lack of action on independence many years ago she told me not to worry Nicola and her had everything in hand. Condescending it most certainly was.

Who do I dislike the most - Oswald - why - because she and the rest of Sturgeon's gang are phoney independence supporters. The other two - I never expected anything from them.

She uses her position to fight for equality, like making sure everyone, no matter who they love or how they identify, is treated fairly. She works hard to stop discrimination and supports laws that help LGBTQ+ people. Her efforts show how important it is to have leaders who stand up for everyone's rights, making society better for all.

I recommend voting Oswald for this reason.

He stated that he was sorry that the complainant had experienced a degree of distress caused by the way the situation played out publicly, including the recordings from the parliamentary group, and Ian Blackford also stated quite clearly that Mr Grady's behaviour towards the member of staff was unacceptable and should never have happened and he also said that he was sorry that it did. Ian Blackford handled this appropriately and as you can see accepted that the complainant had experienced distress and expressed regret about what had come to pass.

Sturgeon said she was clear in her head and in her heart that it was time to go because she drained by the pressures of modern politics with a 24-hour news cycle, the intensity of social media and modern politics’ focus on personality. She had made many sacrifices. She passionately desired a spell with a normal life, to go for a walk or meet friends for afternoon tea and even simple things like learning to drive. The precise timing of her decision was largely set for her by the subsequent month’s special SNP conference on deciding its next strategy in the independence campaign. She said it would have been dishonest to herself and to her party to chair that event knowing she was minded to quit quite soon.
