Scot Goes Pop Fundraising for Independence Polling: an update

As you'll probably have gathered, I was away from home last week in a place with very sporadic internet access, so I have a backlog of about four blogposts I want to write at the back of my mind.  But before I get down to those, I thought I'd pull over for one of my very occasional pitstops to try to give a proper shot in the arm to Scot Goes Pop's ongoing fundraising efforts, and in particular the fundraising for further opinion polls.  First of all, a huge thanks to the people who have sent donations recently - a good few hundred pounds has been raised in recent weeks.  For reasons we all understand, the days of raising several thousand pounds overnight are probably over for the time being, but nevertheless hopefully we can kick on a bit now and get the seventh Scot Goes Pop poll done in a reasonable timescale.  (And, with your indulgence, after this post I'll continue to promote the fundraising at the bottom of each blogpost until enough is raised.)

There are a number of reasons why it's a good idea not to allow all opinion polls conducted at the present time to be ones commissioned by unionist media clients.  We're in a crucial phase where there's a battle to "claim" public opinion on the issue of whether a referendum should take place, or whether the outcome of a plebiscite election should be respected.  The unionists have a huge advantage if they and their fellow travellers effectively get to choose the question wordings in all opinion polls, because the wording and format genuinely make a substantial difference to the reported results.

We're also in uncharted territory at the moment because pollsters are still finding their way in measuring how people might vote in a general election that pro-independence parties have declared to be a de facto referendum.  Any precedents set now in terms of question wordings could prove important later on.

And of course there's the perennial problem of how unionist-flavoured polls can set the agenda for a referendum or election campaign, framing the debate as being all about "fears" over independence.  There are plenty enough reasons to be terrified of remaining in Liz Truss's Brexit Britain indefinitely, and we really should be polling about them.

If you'd like to donate, here are the various options...

Paypal: If you have an account, by far the simplest and quickest way of donating is by sending a direct payment via Paypal.  My Paypal email address is:  jkellysta@yahoo.co.uk

(If you wish, you can add a short note saying something along the lines of "for the fundraiser", but don't worry if you don't do that - it'll be very obvious what the payment is for.)

If you don't have a Paypal account, the GoFundMe fundraiser I set up last year is still open for donations HERE.

And if you prefer a bank transfer, please message me on my contact email address, which is different from my Paypal address and can be found in the sidebar of the blog (desktop version only) or on my Twitter profile.

  1. The current Sturgeon plan (🐌) is just more time wasting to allow her to stay in her job. I'm sorry that some people who should know better have been going along with it. The WGD numpties will do whatever Sturgeon says but other more intelligent people giving some credence to this nonsense is disappointing. Sturgeon could have got Wolfe to do this years ago but instead she got him to attack Martin Keatings.

Sturgeon could have threatened to use an election as a referendum years ago but instead she attacked anyone who suggested this and banned any discussion of independence in the SNP.

The only plan Sturgeon has is to stay in power for as long as possible.

  2. The Bathtub Admiral posts on WGD what YOU James should be saying you will be polling on. He says he is unable to post on SGP so he asks if someone else will post it on SGP for him. Some cheek telling you what to poll on. So I won't be posting what he wants you to do. Dr Jim says no to him as well. Dr Jim gets something right at long last. What a bunch of WGD numpties.

    1. If the Bathtub Admiral is "yesindyref2" (I've no idea what the reason for the nickname is?), he hasn't even attempted to post here for a very long time - as far as I can remember it must be at least months. I deal with every comment on an individual basis anyway.

    2. The Admiral now says there is no helping you and it's all my fault. What a numpty. He should stick to playing with his toy battleships in his bath and grovelling to Sturgeon for an independence referendum. The Bathtub Admiral nickname is because he has a very strong interest in weapons of war, in particular the type that involve the sea. Some might call it a fetish.

    3. The Admiral after wanting to tell you James what to say now wants to tell me what to post. Arrogant Admiral. The division is caused by Sturgeon, her big dug in Maybole, her wee dug in Edinburgh and pet poodle in Perth.

  3. Numpties on WGD are saying Liz Truss will be a great boon to Scottish independence/guaranteed yes vote etc etc. Pretty sure they said that about Johnson and May. What do the numpties keep forgetting? Yes thats right you need to hold a vote in the first place. What a bunch of numpties.

  4. The Great Berwick Bank Robbery.

What is Sturgeon doing to prevent this. Oh that's right she is on holiday and has sold off the rights for a pittance.

It's one thing to have a large bank of wind turbines spoiling the views off the coast of Fife, Angus, Lothians when we need the energy or get some benefit from it but when it is there primarily to help the colonising country ( that's England) then that is just unacceptable.

    1. If the SNP fanzine that calls itself The National hasn't covered this then if you want to know more try the Grousebeater blog.

    3. Bathman, I have no idea. The WGD numpties don't discuss a lot of things.

  5. Nasty WGD numpties Dr Jim and The Bathtub Admiral posting some nasty bile about Kenny McAskill. So is the AIM policy be nice to the Britnats but stick it to anyone in Alba? Certainly seems that way.

Perhaps the numpties just don't like to see anyone doing what the SNP MPs should be doing.

    1. The mad liar Irish Skier jumps in with his usual standard type of comment - Skier says MacAskill is a Unionist. No Saddo Skier he is looking after the interests of his Lothian constituents and the people of Scotland. Something the SNP stopped doing 8 years ago.

  6. Anytime soon top thicko WGD numpty Hamish100 will post on WGD complaining that I post too much on SGP.

    1. My number of posts are nothing compared to The Bathtub Admiral who manages 22 posts on the current WGD numpty article and he wonders why James doesn't bother to read his posts. Hey keep on posting anyway Admiral - I'm all for free speech even for numpties.

  7. Alba have held at least 30 public events on independence over the summer. The SNP are on their hols.

This post is dedicated to thicko Hamish100 who wants to stop me posting and just like the SNP and Sunak is trying to curtail our rights of free speech.

Coming soon in Sturgeon's Scotland: - if you say I would murder a pint and Sturgeon disnae like you then she will get one of her gang to change their name to Pint and get her polis to knock your door in at 5am.

  8. I would prefer not to be anonymous. I have contributed in the past as Bleiddyn, but the 'subscribe to post comments' does not seem to work. The need surely is to encourage 'Conservative for Independence' candidates in every constituency, which would bolster the Yes vote tally and diminish the 'elect an M.P.' vote of the Conservatives and provide a home for those who cannot bring themselves to vote for the SNP left wing brand. Clearly such candidates would need to be credible.
There was an interesting article n a minor Welsh nationalist party (right of centre) mail out today. https://gwlad.org/en/english-what-wales-should-do-when-scotland-votes-no/ . It has some helpful (and worrying) insights

    1. That might make sense in a PR election, but under FPTP there really does need to be just one Yes candidate per constituency.
