Now is the time to partition Plague Island

I was rather alarmed last week that three people independently said to me that Jason Leitch and co appear to have reverted to their March 2020 position of trying to achieve herd immunity through mass infection.  I've long since stopped watching the briefings, so I wasn't entirely sure what this referred to, but unfortunately it's become clearer and clearer over the last 48 hours or so.  Boris Johnson has decided to end the fight against the virus on an arbitrary date that is only a fortnight away.  "If not now, when?" he asks fatuously - the obvious answer to that question being when vaccine coverage is as comprehensive as it can possibly be, which is far from being the case at this stage.  I presume what this is really about is that we're now in summer, and any scientific advice to wait until the autumn must be disregarded because the cretins on GB News and in the Daily Mail will be whingeing about missing out on their month in Santorini.

It also should be a statement of the blindingly obvious that even when it's safe enough to remove the bulk of restrictions, common sense, non-onerous rules like the mandatory wearing of masks on public transport and in shops should remain in place for as long as the virus is in wide circulation.  That actually enhances personal freedom because it allows people to travel and to do normal things in relative safety.  But no, apparently the danger of Neil Oliver's nose developing a slight itch is more important than public health, and Johnson has decreed that masks can go as well.

As per usual, what appears to be happening in Scotland is that we're just going along with whatever the London strategy is, with a slight delay and with a few modifications to give us the illusion of being more careful.  That would explain the change of mood music from Leitch, because sooner or later he'd need a narrative to justify removing restrictions while the virus is ripping through the population.

One thing I would say is that the SNP leadership can't have it both ways on this.  Their stated reason for indefinitely delaying the calling of an independence referendum is that we're in the middle of a public health emergency and their sole focus has to be on that.  But if we're about to fall into line with Johnson's "to hell with it" approach by getting everything back to normal from mid-August onwards, there's no longer any excuse for failing to use the mandate for an indyref as a matter of urgency.

  1. James good to see that you have accepted that the SNP have no intention of delivering independence and are in fact the greatest obstacle to independence.

Sorry to read that the liar Skier has been hassling you. Skier like Sturgeon and her gang are fraudsters.

It's about time posters like Ramstam/Birnie took their heads out the sand and supported you and Alba.

Sturgeon is trying to destroy the yes movement.

    Good luck with your blog.

  2. If you don't mandate wearing face masks for influenza then there's no need to mandate wearing them for covid19. If we still have Covid19 that is. The Indian variant is clearly less harmful than the original one the Chinese made.
Single figure deaths since March, Single figures in ICU since April despite cases rising since the beginning of May.

All you have left is Long Covid and pretending children are dropping like flies.

Has anyone of the doom merchants explained why the virus mutating so that we need a new vaccine spells death for the entire population? They said that about the original one and 6 months later we had more vaccines than you could shake a stick at.

It's not just a facemask. It is the police having the powers to arrest you for not wearing one and break into your house without a warrant if they lie about thinking you've broken one of the rules.

The mask is just a visible sign of complicity in your own oppression, like pretending to love Big Brother.

    1. I can't see what would be so awful about minimising the spread of flu. It may be a milder illness than Covid, but I've had some really nasty doses of flu or flu-like illnesses in recent years, and most of them were probably caught in cinemas, theatres, buses, trains, etc.

    2. Flu kills thousands every year. It's not just a bad cold, despite how some folk talk. The reality is that we probably don't take flu seriously enough, not that we're wildly over the top about Covid.

  3. I wonder if the next delay will be waiting for Robertson to deliver the answers to the constitution, currency etc etc.

  4. Since you are clearly a member of the Devi cult can you explain why we didn't have any mask wearing last year and were Covid free in July and August, yet the enforced mask wearing didn't stop the 2nd infection or indeed the 3rd with the dread Indian variant?

Old Dr Fauci, Leitch and co were correct back then. Masks don't work outside of a clinical setting.

Wearing them outdoors or even indoors in a large ventilated space is pointless.

If they work then shop workers have nothing to worry about. Just more shroudwaving.

Low case numbers in summer 2020 were attributable to the hard lockdown in spring 2020. If that's what you want to go back to as an alternative to the minor inconvenience of wearing masks, let us know.

    2. You really don't understand the purpose, or evidence for, wearing masks, do you? Just some random accusations and completely false assertions. They are part, and only part of, a public health strategy, one which has had significant success with vaccines, but terrible failures of policy on test and trace, care homes, travel etc. But that doesn't give you the simplistic answers you want, so that you can continue to spread nonsense.

  5. Your next opinion poll could maybe include a question about voluntary mask wearing. I suspect that tories will be less likely to wear masks when they are not mandatory, as they are less likely to care about the effects of their actions on others, but I’m not aware that the question will have been asked yet.

Sadly. James, I believe the prevaricating Scottish Government will use the "not until the EFFECTS of Covid are over" as the cop out.

  8. Like the flu, covid is less serious in summertime. One reason being that people are healthier in summer. When you come out of lockup the virus is still among us. Better to get a dose during the good weather when your system is better able to cope.

    1. Well, at least one person has been successfully brainwashed.

    2. The people who are at risk are the same ones who are at risk from
viral influenza. So isolate and vaccinate these ones.Mass vaccination while the virus is spreading among us will encourage more mutations.

    3. You've got that completely upside down. The biggest risk of mutations is to allow the virus to spread freely in a population with only partial vaccine cover.
