The biggest significance of the arrival of 2021 has of course been Brexit, which is why no fewer than five of the questions in this blog's exclusive start-of-year Survation poll have been related to the EU. But this is also (at least in theory) Olympic year, so I thought it might be a good moment to ask a population - used to seeing Scotland compete as a nation in its own right in football, rugby, cricket, curling and many other sports - how they feel about the fact that there is still no Team Scotland at the Olympic Games. Previous polls over the years on this subject have shown wildly contradictory results, probably due to differences in question wording. But I defy anyone to say that the following question isn't neutral. My original proposed question was significantly revised by Survation, and what we ended up with is scrupulously even-handed. In fact, if anything it might very slightly favour the 'Team GB' option, because it reminds respondents that British representation is the status quo, and many people do tend to revert to the status quo as a default if they have no strong feelings on a subject.
Currently, Scottish athletes represent Scotland at the Commonwealth Games, and Great Britain at the Olympic Games. Do you think Scottish athletes should represent Scotland or Great Britain at the Olympic Games?

I've had three pieces in The National this week about other questions in the poll - you can read them HERE, HERE and HERE.

If this is on-the-record rather than a deniable anonymous briefing, it'll set a lot of minds to rest, including my own. Nicola Sturgeon is phenomenally popular, and if she has an indyref Plan B we're undoubtedly a lot better off *not* changing leader.https://t.co/KX71q9uqWB

Well, even I have a 'but' - there needs to be a Plan C of a plebiscitary election just in case the UK govt's legal challenge to a referendum succeeds. But this sounds like a huge step forward, so I'm certainly not going to be churlish.
— James Kelly (@JamesKelly) January 22, 2021
To you first point the reason that there is not a 'Team Scotland' (or Team England, Team Wales, Team Northern Ireland for that matter) is because since 96 the IoC only allows ' independent states as recognised by the international community' to have a Olympic Committee and thus be able be able send athletes to the Olympics. I think Gibraltar has gone to the Swiss Courts at least twice to get this overturned and both times failed.
ReplyDeleteYes, I'm aware of that. The way to get an Olympic team is to become an independent country.
DeleteAlthough let's be honest, you're wrong to claim that is "the reason there is not a Team Scotland". We've been represented by Team GB since long before 1996.
DeleteA respectful UK would, e.g. design UK athletes clothing to represent their home nations. Some based on the saltire, the st. George's cross, the welsh dragon...
DeleteJust imagine how more unifying that would be rather than the 'suck it up jock vermin' empire butcher's apron?
I am an Irish national as well as a Scottish + British citizen. It is the bloody butchers apron to me and 1/3 of the world. It's a hated flag historically, including by most people in one of the main partners of the union. It couldn't be less unifying as a symbol.
What I don't understand is why brit unionists don't understand that forcing britishness on people only repels them from it.

Writing in the London Evening Standard, where he is now editor-in-chief, Mr Osborne said the North was “slowly becoming part of a united Ireland” and most people in England “will not care”.
The former Conservative MP wrote: “By unleashing English nationalism, Brexit has made the future of the UK the central political issue of the coming decade. Northern Ireland is already heading for the exit door.
Cameron was a British PM, May an English one, but who understood Britishness. Boris is English.

First read was interesting!
ReplyDeleteI don't actually care for the Olympics because it is all about Team GB or Team England to be exact. It is a shameless display of Brit Master Racism or more actually English Master Racism. I view any Scot standing still to God Save us from those Barbarian Scots nauseating. That 42% of alleged Scots would prefer Scots to be cravens below the Butchers Pinny at the Olympics illustrates one of the problems Scotland presently has. I call it the anti Scottish British virus.
ReplyDeleteCrikey just how many multiple personalities does Smearer Skier have.
ReplyDeleteSays Independence for Scotland, aka Cubby, aka GWC, aka McGubbin, aka Floppy.

I guess our QUKAnon Salmond conspirator who's annoyed with me hasn't worked out how to copy and paste them.
Anyway, seems I'm pissing off the right people with my Salmond conspiracy QUKAnon posts, which has made my morning! :-)
DeleteIndeed, seems to quite childish of your stalker to do that.
Deletelooking forward to the Holyrood voting figures. Maybe we will get a Panelbase poll in the Sunday Times as we haven't heard from them this year.
Marcia - so who do you think posted all that crap - who is this stalker you refer to?
DeleteYou seem to be quite good at just popping up with your accusations and slurs.
Smearer Skier - you are also good at your baseless smearing. My bet is a childish false flag by the nutter Juteman.
DeleteSeems I'm annoying the QUKAnon salmond conspiracy folks.

ReplyDeleteThe 11 point plan published in the National. Is this the secret plan that people like Smearer Skier says you should ALWAYS keep hidden from the Britnats? 😂😂😂😂😂
ReplyDeleteOr is it just a phoney plan to deceive the Britnats and Sturgeon is still holding on to the real thing in her handbag alongside the knife she stabbed Salmond in the back with?
Or is it just a lot of baloney to go with all the other baloney announcements the SNP make about independence?
Place your vote and take your chance it will always be better than British parties running Holyrood but far from good enough.
You don't believe Scotland can hold a perfectly legal referendum without England's permission?
DeleteAnd the announcement is plan A. Plan B remains under wraps, which is why unionists are mocking the SNP.
DeleteSmearer Skier - If you had a memory you would know I have always posted that Scots are sovereign and there is no doubt that Scotland can hold a legal referendum if the people want it. Spoiler for you Smearer they have given the SNP multiple mandates for indyref2 but the lazy gradualists in charge didnae have the bottle for independence.
DeleteSo Smearer Skier thinks Sturgeon still has a secret plan tucked away in her handbag and the newly announced plan is a decoy to throw the Britnats off the scent. I forecast when there is no plan Sturgeon will say Peter must have stolen it from my handbag when I wasn't looking and ran off with it.
Delusional nonsense as ever from Smearer Skier
My one point plan for independence is put a mandate for actual independence in the manifesto for the May 2021 election. It is legal and democratic.
ReplyDeleteA referendum is just as legal, but clearer in outome. It's just unionists that argue otherwise.
DeleteSmearer Skier in case you hadn't noticed Britnats argue that there should be neither. Surprised that has escaped youa majority now agree with me - I refer you to James poll results.
DeleteThe folks saying the Scottish people cannot express their democratic will in a legal referendum on independence - ergo demanding the latter must resort to a plan B immediately - are unionists.
ReplyDeleteIn may Scots will vote for a referendum bill to be implemented. If they do so, it will go ahead and be legal. The only way to try and stop it will be for English Tories to try and tell a Scottish court that Scotland's independence is an English decision.
Good luck with that. Even if they won, the union would be finished.
Smearer Skier - the majority want a vote in May for actual independence. Not another broken promise. You cannae even commit to which year this referendum will take place.
ReplyDeleteWrong again Smearer Skier - there is another way a referendum will not take place - the SNP leadership say now is not the time due to the pandemic or whatever else they think people will swallow.
Nearly 5 thousand people have died in Scotland due to the covid pandemic. Over 2000 are currently in hospital with covid.
DeleteLives you clearly don't give a shit about.
I guess you are one of the 'kill for the union' folk.
Smearer Skier - that post is a disgrace and I will remember it next time you post you are a nice guy.
DeleteSkier you are an ignorant scumbag and you crossed the line with that post.
