I suggested the other day on Twitter that TV detector vans had better be an urban myth, because it's hard to think of a more self-defeating use of licence fee money. But I think I've found something even more self-defeating - how about using Labour membership fees to launch a costly legal appeal to attempt to prevent Labour members from exercising their right to vote in a leadership election, which is one of the main reasons many of them joined the party in the first place. It's really not a great look, is it?
Something I have never understood from the word go is why registered supporters, who paid a one-off fee a few weeks ago for the sole purpose of voting in the leadership election, have supposedly demonstrated a greater commitment to the Labour party than people who paid to become full members several months ago. And yet that is seemingly the logic of the rules that the Labour plotters are trying to reinstate at enormous expense. It would be nice if at least one journalist gets around to asking them to explain that to us.
We don't have journalists, we have public and privately employed state spokespersons.

HSBC updates sterling forecasts: $1.25 by the end of September, $1.20 by the end of the year, $1.10 by end-2017. Parity with the euro too.
B of E failed to buy (at ANY price!) the bonds it was needing. Something serious going on there but nothing in the papers.
DeleteI always understood hara-kiri as a kind of act of public atonement to the world---Japanese middle-ages style.
ReplyDeleteIs this what Labour are about?
Political ritual Seppuku by a thousand cuts, each mis-step more ludicrous than the one before.
But rather than public sympathy, they are only attracting hilarity and contempt.
Aw Juteman, you beat me to it.
ReplyDeleteI guess the committee reasoned that they had to have a registered supporters route because the rules provided for that last time. But, they tried to make it as unattractive as possible for Corbyn voters by limiting it to a 48-hour signup and increasing the price by over 800% to £25. Totally cynical.
ReplyDeleteAt least this gives the lie to the claim made by many of the PLP right that they represent the 'real' working class voter, and that Corbyn's supporters are latte-sipping radicals, students etc. If that were the case, raising the price would make no sense.
Oh come on now you know that no so called Bwit Journalist is going to ask them to explain this real head scratcher. They are too busy drooling about the Bwits at the Olympics and then slagging off the Russkies to be bothered as it is.
ReplyDeleteSpeaking of the olympics. Remember being told repeatedly that Scotland can't have a team because we're not an independent country. Nice to see Hong Kong and Palestine competing. Neither of whom are countries but nevermind.
DeleteShame the english rugby team were just thrashed in disgrace. Hope the men end up going home with three defeats and every traitorous player crippled.
That's appalling. Using the word traitor is unacceptable. Also, why would you wish injury on anyone?
DeletePalestine is recognised as an independent state by an overwhelming majority of countries. It's also implicitly recognised by the UN.
DeleteDemocracy is the Nat sis greetin their eyes oot when they lost the Scottish referendum and said they wis robbed. DeleteSeek help Nat si bhoy rest your eyes from the computer. Wash on a regular basis.
DeleteSeen several of your comments(sic) and none of them seem to have any bearing on the subject under discussion. You do come over as some sort teaspoon only useful for stirring, the SNP have said they DON'T want to BE dragged out of the EU,nobody has said that we have already been dragged out, some people especially the new residents i.e. Europeans who have came here to they voted no to Scottish independence because they believed (wrongly) that Westminster told the truth and that Scotland would be dragged of the EU and thus they would have to leave and lose their jobs and new life and therefore they voted no,now all those that did so that I have spoken to,want to change their mind and their vote to yes.The British referendum was fair,I agree with that, but the big but is that people voted to stay in the union of the UK because they would also stay in the larger union of the European Union, that is one sure fact, how many others have awoken to unionist liars I don't know but as circumstances change so do peoples opinions and decisions. You also vote every five years for a new shade of government because you are allowed to change your mind,if not they why have we bothered with more elections after the first one elected a government? surely by your reasoning(!)we never needed to as that was the settled will of the people.I know you are unable to carry on with an honest discussion because your limit is petty snide remarks looking for a reaction, this time you have given me an opportunity to write this out and see if it makes sense, and is simple enough for you to understand.
DeleteNice to see Nadine back again. But Nadine, darling, why call yourself a working class Glaswegian? No nice girl from Chigwell should call herself that, but I suppose it's fun.
DeleteThe way I see it is this - Britain, as a whole, is a VERY eurosceptic country, has been for a LONG time (probably since Maastricht), and we voted to stay as part of Britain in 2014 in the KNOWLEDGE that one of the two major parties of government had pledged an in/out EU referendum if elected at the next general election.
DeleteSo Scotland knew what it was getting into in 2014. We signed the contract, eyes wide open. If we now try to tear it up, what message does that send to the world? It tells our prospective creditors that Scotland is a whiny little country that is subject to sudden changes of mind on hugely important issues if things do not go as we'd hoped. Great start to an independent country, that.

Compare and contrast with a Labour Party that see's new members as 'entryists' rather than new members.
The Labour Party has lost it's trolly.
I think GWC is an annoying troll, but what annoys me even more is James's steadfast refusal to do anything about it. It really is beyond a joke now.
ReplyDeleteJames, to be a bit brutal about it - this persistent troll is devaluing every post you make and making your blog look amateurish. No matter how incisive or valuable your articles are, everyone who comes here sees endless amounts of spam in the comments and surely concludes that you are simply pissing into the wind, no matter what you say.
When are you going to take your fingers out of your ears and put your readership first for once, instead of your arbitrary, nonsensical devotion to persisting with blogspot and all the problems that clearly come with it?
Practically every regular here wants you to do something about the comments section (and any attempts at debate) being destroyed by one or two determined individuals every time you post. You have the power and support to sort this out and you continue to ignore it, which really fucking frustrates me, I have to say.
I can't think of one reason to persist with this format when there are clearly better options. One really does question your logic when it comes to this.
You demean this blog by your lack of political comment and refusing to debate Tartan Tory/ Blue Tory Thatcherite policies. You are just a Nat si fanatic and an English hater. As we say in Glesga East End, get it right up ye.
DeleteAllow me to be equally "brutal" in my response - I have explained the position about a billion times, and I am sick to the back teeth of having to say the same thing over and over and over again.
DeleteThe problem doesn't lie with James or indeed the troll himself. The problem lies with the idiots who persist in falling into the trap of replying to him.
DeleteHi there mr anonymous poster.
DeleteAny method that stops GWC from posting would also stop you from posting.
Technical fact there, that you don't seem to be willing to acknowledge.
I know you have, and it has been wrong each and every one of those billion times.
DeleteAnd I too. am sick to the back teeth with suggesting to you that deletion of trolls is not censorship.
Your idea of free speech verges on assuming that hate speech is acceptable.
It is not.
"The problem lies with the idiots who persist in falling into the trap of replying to him."

A lie.

That theory hasn't actually been tested, though, has it? When was the last time two or three threads went by without some sap being unable to resist?
"That theory hasn't actually been tested, though, has it?"
DeleteOf course it has. The troll was spamming threads long before the replies started and has kept doing so in threads only a few days ago when no response was tested.
Pretending otherwise or naively hoping a racist spewing out hate-speech will just go away if we all ignore it (when he self-evidently hasn't for all this time) is staggeringly stupid.
"I am sick to the back teeth of having to say the same thing over and over and over again"
ReplyDeleteWell bloodywell get off your arse and do something about it.
No. You're the one with the problem, so sort it out for yourself.

The internet has opened a fire door allowing every sociopath with a jerrycan and a box of matches to ignite a blast of napalm on all they see and detest in an effort to tell the world their personal situation is the result of everybody’s stupidity, never their inadequacy – and we must all pay!
Deletecalm down Aldo. even for a tory you sound even more of a twit than usual "Billy Goat Troll". lol lol lol
DeleteNadine - time for bed, surely. Your head will be splitting in the morning, dear.
DeleteThe Labour Party has essentially withdrawn from the field, leaving it entirely to the Conservatives. As a tory, I'm absolutely delighted. But why were labour so stupid as to not have greater safeguards in place to prevent this kind of crisis. There are tories and ukip supporters out there right now in possession of the 3 pound membership, laughing at the fact they are going to get the chance - yet again - to vote in Corbyn. The Conservative leadership race was a masterclass in competence by comparison.
ReplyDelete"The undecideds and the bottlers will put it in the back of the net for 'remain'. I'm sure Cameron also has a few tricks up his sleeve to deploy in the dying days of the campaign."
Deletethe £3 supporters fee ran out. The new one - for the leadership vote only - is £25. But why anybody from the Blue or Purple Tories would waste their money trying to scupper a party that's also doing itself up like a non-u kipper is anyone's guess.
Delete"The undecideds and the bottlers will put it in the back of the net for 'remain'. I'm sure Cameron also has a few tricks up his sleeve to deploy in the dying days of the campaign."
DeleteNot really fair. Aldo didn't actually make one of his famous predictions in the post you replied to.
those are his own words from this blog. feeling a bit sorry for the tories are you? the blairites tried and failed spectacularly to disenfranchise tens of thousands of voters. but no matter how much of a car-crash the incompetent blairites made of the labour leadership election they are still having a democratic vote to choose their leader. the tories are so hopelessly split on brexit the tory establishment was terrified of letting tory members vote on May as leader and they didn't even get the chance. remember that desperate short term 'fix' when it all starts to fall apart and the tories start tearing each other to pieces and split over brexit with the kippers joining in. if they can even manage to formulate any sort of coherent plan for brexit that is. certainly doesn't look likely so far or any time soon.
Delete"Those are his own words from this blog".
DeleteYes, but they are not relevant.
I would imagine the plan for brexit is to negotiate a deal where we get free trade, with some changes to free movement. If we can't get that then we leave completely and have the same trading relationship with europe as any other country in the world. There you go, that wasn't difficult.
"I would imagine the plan for brexit is to negotiate a deal where we get free trade, with some changes to free movement. If we can't get that then we leave completely and have the same trading relationship with europe as any other country in the world."
Delete*snip* That's a keeper.
Too stupid to even know just how childish and naive that sounds.
Most countries in the world aren't in the EU or the single market. They get by fine - and so did we, until 1973.
DeleteIt appears you are the one who is lacking in the old brainbox department. But, then, we all knew that anyway as you're a mental defective with anger management problems who spams an online blog all day long :0)
Nope. £3 from last time only purchased that one vote.
ReplyDeleteFair dos. But if you really really really hate a party (and many tories and ukippers see labour, rightly or wrongly, as having basically murdered British culture), then you wont have any qualms about signing up for this one and paying 25 pounds.
DeleteThe only people who should get to vote in something like this are long term members. If the Labour Party can't understand that then they are too stupid to be in government.
It is a sad reflection on where politics in England is when anyone who dares to challenge Thatcherite doctrine is seen,or at least portrayed,as a left wing extremist.
ReplyDeleteThe Thatcherite Labour establishment view these people as a threat to their livelihood who must be stopped at any cost, just not to them personally.
England/UK is in a very dark place when it is represented by a single narrow political view aided and abetted by HM press who champion the same.
England needs Corbyn and friends to supply a wider spectrum of views and offer the electorate real choice and not just more of the same, whichever political party rules in Westminster.
Even if England's voters do not agree with them,at least they will have been offered a different option than from the extreme right wing Tories who have ruled the UK for decades.
The Nat sis continue with Thatcherite policies. Privatised railways and buses. Energy companies. Cleaning and security in public services with low wages etc.
DeleteThe sheer hypocrisy from you Nat sis!

DeleteThe Labour party has been taken over by Red Tories since Margaret Thatcher's protege, Tony Blair, was the leader. MT counted TB and New Labour as her 2 greatest achievements. Real Labour members deserted the party in droves and voters ignored it because "why vote for a thinly-disguised clone, when you can vote for the real thing?" Many have now returned, bringing with them many other people who are fed up with the failed neoliberal ideology. The Corbynites are fighting hard to regain control for the people, and the Red Tories are fighting dirty to keep hold of power. They seem now to be finding ways of emptying the party coffers as much as possible preparatory to their departure en masse to form a new party funded by their corporate chums.
DeleteWhat people forget is that we actually did try Corbynism - between 1945 and 1979 - and it completely fucked the country. Mass strikes at the drop of a hat, eye watering inflation, rubbish piled up in the streets, the dead unburied. Give me Thatcherism any day of the week rather than that.
DeleteSo what you're saying is that WINSTON CHURCHILL - Prime Minister between 1951 and 1955 - was a Corbynite?
DeleteAnd on that bombshell...
Now Aldo's even getting predictions about the past wrong. Impressive.
DeleteChurchill in his second term did nothing to roll back the socialist post war consensus - and neither did any of his successors, labour or tory, until the election of Margaret Thatcher.
DeletePerhaps the Labour NEC would like to start a crowd-founder to back the appeal against the court ruling rather than use member's funds..?
ReplyDeleteNo. That would defeat the intention, in my view.
DeleteWith regret, I've deleted a couple of comments (which means the replies to those comments have also disappeared). When I said the matter was closed, I meant it.
ReplyDeleteSo you are prepared to delete comments. Just not the ones causing the trouble. That's a shame.

ReplyDeleteAh democracy.
I used to read John Redwood, and Political Betting. Not visited either of them for nigh on 2 years now. Been to Asda just twice in that time. Haven't bought a Tunnocks or Baxters product since September '14.

When this site is on a sane platform please post the news on Wings. Or if a fundraiser is launched to pay for the transition also ( because I LOVE this site ) post. Good luck.

ReplyDeleteNow I have calmed down, I wanted to urge you to deal with that cretin. Im certain it is achieving its aim in disrupting your blog, as Im sure there are many others who react the way I do.
I may dip in again at some point, but if that creature is still commenting, I wont be back.
James, I am not au fait with blogging, and I have always just assumed that you were unable to delete posts on here. I have no idea why you don't just delete GWC? Can you explain why he, she, or it is allowed to spew this bile post after post? There is NEVER a constructive or meaningful addition to the discourse from he, she, or it - EVER! Why James? Why can't you delete his posts?

I have never said I can't delete his posts, and in fact I have deleted some. But people are constantly telling me to 'ban' him, even though I have explained repeatedly that it is not possible to ban individuals on the Blogger platform. I have no intention of spending half my waking existence deleting posts just because they contain the words "Nat sis".

DeleteJames, you've got two trolls on here - and they basically dominate all discourse. You're going to have to change platform or your blog is screwed. Sorry.
ReplyDeleteThe answer is no. Sorry. By the way, I'd be interested to know who you reckon the second troll is, because many people would say it's you.
DeletePresumably it's the poster who spams the stuff about "the poster above is a far right racist troll from England" after all GWC's comments. It was mildly funny when all he was doing was posting "Eat your cereal" but it's now become as annoying as GWC himself.
DeleteAll in all a great win for GWC, I imagine he's really pleased. The only solution appears to be not even to open the comments on SGP, and absolutely NOT to consider making a substantive comment oneself.
I spent about an hour last night deleting dozens of anonymous comments which contained the words "JAMES KELLY IS AN ARROGANT PRICK" over and over again. I must say I'm rapidly losing sympathy for the idea that GWC is the biggest problem here.
DeleteJames, like many on here, I am a fan of this blog, and enjoy reading the posts, until the troll makes its dreaded appearance. Could I suggest that you delete GWC2's troll comments for a week, along with any of the accompanying replies? Perhaps twice a day? I THINK that the number of comments will rapidly increase as people get involved in intelligent discussion? Perhaps it will give up? Worth a try?
DeleteAlex Birnie
As long as long as the racist troll posts it's going to get those repies. Be certain of that.
DeleteHe goes away so do the replies. It's not rocket science.
As for it having no effect, well it's not actually for the troll, it's for anyone unfortunate enough to come to these comments and not know what they are dealing with. They'll know every single time now.
Also, it's several people posting the reply to him, not one.
Which might explain why he's been even more deranged than usual and is the one most likely to be to be trying to spam James directly as he get's more an more upset.
No, it's not him. I'm pretty sure it was the same guy who called me a "twit" yesterday. The abuse gradually escalated.
Deletetories are twits.
DeleteAnyone who has been on this blog for any length of time should know that by now. So whoever called you that doesn't know what the fuck they are talking about and is trying pathetically to deflect it onto someone else. The poster most likely to call tories twits certainly wouldn't call you that even as an insult. He'd have different ones, rest assured.
Who has been furious with the replies and wants to respond in kind? It's the racist troll or one of the stormfront lite crowd like Aldo.
The scottish posters who call tories twits would argue with you, not spam one phrase. That is all the racist troll deserves and all it is going to get. Every single time it appears on here.
James, I'm hardly on here these days - and I was never much cop as a troll anyway (too easily drawn into civilised debate).
DeleteNo, your two guys are GWC and the person who chases him around (whom I strongly suspect to be arch foam at the mouther Mick Pork - the style is very similar).
It's up to you of course. But they have pretty much destroyed the comments section.
As I have said before, imagine the troll pleasuring himself to each reply and you will soon stop.
ReplyDeleteWell, most of us would...
It may be coincidence but when I occasionally mention the Nat sis do carry on with Thatcherite policies some person or maybe persons gets a tad upset. Och Aye. It seems the Tartan Tories have the same hatred of public ownership like their Blue bum chums.

DeleteJames I would respectfully ask that you don't delete this comment as you did my previous one. It was respectful and in no way abusive unlike the trolls who are ruining this site. I like so many others value your blog a lot but we (and you are bound to be part of it as it's your blog and you control it) have a problem. Unless you take the line that comments don't matter there has arisen an unreconciliable issue with the trolls versus those keen to discuss your ideas etc. Bit like the Labour Party which you analyse so well and forensically something has to be done to allow either the trolls or the genuine followers to continue. In my humble op, you have to do something more than say the matter is closed.
ReplyDeleteDelete this if you must and I will trouble you no more but I think it's a shame to allow the trolls to ruin such an important site to at least the response and discussion part of it.
If you have been, thanks for reading...
I deleted your comment because it tried to continue a discussion which I made abundantly clear is now closed. I'll let this one pass, but please - no more. I have explained my stance dozens of times over a period of months and it isn't going to change. Further discussion is fruitless.
DeleteAs for the abusive anonymous commenter who has called me a "prick" several hundred times in the last 12 hours (not an exaggeration), he can rest assured that all of his comments will be deleted as soon as I see them.
Sorry I think that should be irreconciliable...
ReplyDeleteI have tried scrolling past GWC and his accompanying posters but it just went on and on to the point where I gave up. I will continue to read James' blog as I find it informative, controversial and interesting but as far as commenting is concerned---pass.
ReplyDeleteConcur. Quantity of comments is no substitute for quality of comment.
