New podcast

Just a quick note to let you know that myself and Michael Gray are the guests in this week's edition of the Newsnet podcast, hosted as always by Derek Bateman.  Topics discussed include the state of the Holyrood polls, the less-than-pickle-free situation David Cameron finds himself in as a result of the Panama Papers, and what we've learned about modern Scotland now that the majority of our political party leaders are openly gay.  You can listen to the podcast HERE.

  2. The podcast felt like it missed the bigger picture mainly by the nature of the questions asked. In my opinion the bigger issue is why is this election so crap, and why are the press and media in Scotland so woeful? The fact the people don't seem to register how bad it is feels like part of the Scottish cringe that allows us to accept crap politics and a crap media. In this article http://www.scotsman.com/news/joyce-mcmillan-rational-reasons-for-snp-support-1-4094093 Joyce Macmillan goes some way to explaining the factors behind this and locates it in the refusal of the unionist parties to accept the real reasons for their demise. The media she believes have played a part in this refusal because the media see the rejection of the 3 unionist parties as the problem (one party dominance) that needs to be fixed rather than asking why all the unionist parties have been so massively rejected. If, like the media, you refuse to accept a rejection of Westminster politics and, like the unionist parties, you refuse to accept and address why you've been rejected then the only course open to the unionist parties and the media is see the current state of Scottish politics as some kind of conspiracy perpetuated by the SNP on the Scottish public and that pretty much sums up the recurrent theme of this election. What is most galling is that both RISE and the SGP seem unaware that by joining in the SNP bad fest they are playing along in a unionist attempt to derail Scottish politics and bring it back into line.

    1. Once our independence comes, there will only be new parties which spring from the present SNP. The best politicians are pretty much all now in the SNP. Normal political life is on hold until after the next, decisive referendum.

Is there any country where the representatives of the former Colonial power have any role post independence?

Scotland is independent. The Scotiish people voted to remain in the Union as an independent nation.

  3. The podcast was interesting, but as always,no one mentioned the difficulties unionist parties are having in attracting support from younger people. There still seems to be an assumption among the punditry that people will stop believing "the best people to run a country are the people who live there" when they get older. The fact is,unionist parties are going to have to win these people over. Not win them back. Not prevent them going over to Yes,but win them away from what they've always believed.

I note your hero Mr Hosie has publicly admitted that Cameron was totally innocent of wrong doing. My party to their discredit have carried out a witch hunt knowing the man was innocent. And after all those years wee Nicola has published her tax returns. Aye well support the Union and out of the EU ra noo.

Good laugh Anon I am sure the Nat sis will improve building regulations and control the power of the building industry. Clearly you do not have any knowledge of the building trade. How long have the Nat sis been in power? And how long has it taken to find the faults? And have any constrution companies bungded the Nat sis.

It is ony history and fate that determined who signed those deals and if the Nat sis had signed the deal the outome of the construction was likely to be the same unless you Nat sis have experts on construction. If my memory serve me well you Nat sis opposed PFI and I agreed with that however the actual construction was never an issue. And the weans are getting a break from the failing education system.

    10. "the actual construction was never an issue"? It bloody well is now. Yet another mess caused by Labour incompetence. And knock off the Nazi crap, it makes you look petulant and juvenile.

    2. He/she/it always posts late at night. Usually starts at back of 5 and is a heavy poster around 10 ish and frequently at about 1 AM ish. I think he/she/it possibly works backshift on whatever government agency he works.

I have it in mind to do a detailed analysis when I get a day off. But right now my time is better spent canvassing for the election.

  10. Whatever the reason, GWC2 has succeeded in derailing what used to be very interesting and consistently well considered discussions on all things political below the line.
Can't remember the last heated and well argued extended discussion on here between the genuinely interested. GWC2 and the like's 'freedom of expression' has certainly limited my own interest in the kind of debate now commonly found below the line on SGPoP (and therefore my own willingness to engage in discussion and exchange of views on the site).
I think it's a real shame that such a resource has been lost to the Independence debate and I would like to urge James to reassess the direction that BTL 'debate' has slowly and continually been driven (and to what purpose). Just my own opinion.

What would be a real bonus is if the Britiah vote tae get out of Europe. Then the Nat sis would have the real dilemma. Who would they sponge too. Stay with the UK or succumb tae the EU and lose all sovereignty and the GBP. We will find out soon the Nat si hatred of the English.
