Terry Wogan

While watching the tennis this morning (which was a painful enough process anyway), I was absolutely heartbroken to look at my phone and see the news about Terry Wogan.  Of course I'm a Eurovision fan, but even if it wasn't for that, some of my earliest childhood memories are of getting ready for school in a freezing Kilsyth kitchen while my mum listened to the Wogan breakfast show on the radio.  He was like a kindly uncle, who was constantly there somewhere in the background throughout my life.  And unlike a number of other BBC celebrities who made their name at around the same time, I think we can confidently predict that his legacy is never going to be tarnished in any way at all.

There are so many highlights from his decades of Eurovision commentary, but this one particularly sticks in my mind from 2002 in Estonia.  Unfortunately the final line is partly cut off, but it was : "It's life, Jim, but not as we know it.  You cannot beat the Eurovision Song Contest.  Where else are you going to see that kind of thing?"

  1. I used to enjoy his merry quips on the ESC. He predicted some of the neighbour votes.

    1. Yes, he was much better at that than Graham Norton is. He must have studied his atlas.

    2. You don't really need and atlas to know Greece and Cyprus will give each other 12 points and the ROI never ever ever gives the UK 12 no matter how many they get in return.

Used to be Ray Moore followed by Wogan. Both gone to cancer. :(

Terry sussed out the petty nationalism involved in the Eurovision dunkies ago and made it known. At least his twin Ken Bruce is still around.
      My condolences to his family.

  2. Its very sad Terry has died. Used to enjoy his programmes.

Occasionally hear Ken Bruce on the radio, trying hard, but will NEVER emulate Terry in ANY shape nor form!

  3. Terry Wogan was always very good at pretending to be British. Graham Norton sometimes forgets and gets excited about a high score for Ireland ;)

As for that song, it actually wasn't too bad (for Eurovision). Would have worked better without the stupid costumes.

Terry Wogan obtained dual nationality so he was Brit/Irish. Norton was the only gay proddie in his village!

    2. You know that all Irish can get a British passport. I just wonder why apparently Scots will be excluded from this arrangement or was it just Westminster bullshit...

Why would Nat sis want a Brit Passport. And would it be a black mark against a Unionist to want a Brit Passport in an independent Scotland? Tens of thousands of Irish Brits left the ROI because they were not wanted..
