Labour : you confuse me

Now, I do fully appreciate that Labour hate the idea of devolving anything meaningful to the Scottish Parliament.  That's fine, that's their prerogative.  It's a big part of why they keep losing elections, so to some extent it should even be encouraged.  But if their whole strategy for next May is going to be based on the claim that the beastly SNP could reverse the Tory tax credits cuts in full but are refusing to do so, isn't it rather obviously a stupid idea to vote against an SNP amendment to the Scotland Bill that actually would have devolved power over tax credits to the Scottish Parliament?  Apart from anything else, the amendment would have been defeated anyway, so it seems a bit pointless that they've sabotaged their own strategy just to make the Tory majority much bigger than it otherwise would have been.  Now the SNP will simply be able to say : "So you want us to use a power that we don't have, and that you voted against us having on the 9th of November?"

At the very least, couldn't Labour have abstained or something?  They're usually really good at that.

The Nat sis are being given powers to offset so called welfare cuts. Will they use those powers or claim they do not have them and blame the English. The Nat si Tartan Tories claim they hate the Tories but the day of reckoning for the Nat sis is approaching. Do they tax the Scottish people more or not. If not they should put up and shut up about the poor, welfare and foodbanks. Their hypocrisy will be exposed.

    2. Are you simple GWC? Labour had the chance to vote to devolve Tax Credits, but instead voted against it.
SNP could potentially set up a new benefit to offset tx credit cuts when these new powers come into force (not until 2017/18 I think) but the Tories will class this as income, and either tax it (sending money to HMRC UK) or use it to offset other benefits the claimant recieves (saving the UK welfare system money)
So the net effect is that the Scottish Government would be spending millions in admin and trying to stop the tax credit cuts, but it would just end up sending money to HMRC or saving the UK welfare system money, at the expense of the Scottish taxpayer, with no actual benefit to the very person that they're trying to help.

  2. You are absolutely correct, James.

Labour's hypocricy is there for every Scot to see.

Vote with the Tories to block REAL power to the Scottish Government to deal with Tory Tax Credit Cuts.......... then blame the SG for not dealing with them properly.

    Labour are Spineless, Gutless twats.

Just like their cretinous, imbecilic, impotent wee Trolls on here.

I also note that Fluffy has not denied, that even if the SG topped-up those Tax Credits -- the Tory WM Govt would consider it "income" and claw it back later, in relation to Universal Credit applications.

  3. Glasgow Working Class - You do know that it's the Tories that are going to be cutting the Tax Credits, don't you? And if the Scottish government tries to soften the blow to the poorest in our society, that money will either have to come from Scotland's block grant or be raised in Scotland from other means. Also, the Tories have not ruled out the scenario where that top-up would be deemed as income & subsequently nicked by the UK treasury. Where's the SNP hypocrisy there? All I see is unionists setting traps to destroy the SNP & they don't mind laying waste to Scotland in the process.

  4. I enjoyed watching the SNP getting cuffed over FFA and the proposed devolution of indyref decisions.

As for the rest, top up the welfare payments with increases in taxation, if that's what Scottish people want and they vote for it. Don't berate the English and expect them to pay the bills.

    3. Also : Why would you enjoy the democratic verdict of the Scottish people being overturned by English MPs?

    4. We are a United Kingdom James. We voted to remain so and I consider myself British, first and foremost. Also, it's nice to see the 'mighty' SNP brought low once in a while. They may rule the roost in Holyrood, but not at Westminster - and that's comforting to know.

And isn't it a great Scottish tradition that men are kept humble? Didn't we used to drag our monarchs in front of church congregations and pillory them for being weak and feeble men, mere tools of a greater God?

That is one element of Scottish culture I like to see upheld!

Now we just let them purr at our expense. It's the supine unionist way.

    6. So you're one of those brits that would rather get fucked by the tories than run your own country?

You are a sad little forelock tugger. Go find a suitable rock and go back to sleep.

    7. I am a conservative and my country is the United Kingdom. So that kind of invalidates your comment on a couple of levels.

But if you don't like austerity, then the SNP's eye watering tartan austerity max post independence is hardly something you should be wishing for.

    8. "Also, it's nice to see the 'mighty' SNP brought low once in a while."

But they weren't, Aldo. I'll have to check the figures, but I'm fairly sure that Scottish MPs voted 56-3 in favour of devolving tax credits, in line with the wishes of the Scottish public as expressed at the general election. Do you seriously count it as a 'victory' when democracy is overturned? Did the Soviets score a 'victory' when the only way they could overturn the Prague Spring was with tanks?

    9. These issues are decided by the British parliament James, in line with the wishes of the Scottish people as expressed on 18/09/14. So the result stands.

Tax credits can still be "topped up" and new welfare powers created, can they not? So what's the problem? Get on with helping 'ra poor'...

    10. *that should be "new welfare payments created"

  5. It doesn't matter how Labour voted, it won't get reported in the media.
Even if it was, it would be glossed over and forgotten in a day.

  6. Glasgow Working Class you do realise how retarded your anti SNP rant is don't you... Labour could have voted with the SNP and given the Scottish government the power over Tax credits instead you support voting for these cuts for Scotland then shouting at the SNP to mitigate them.

You sick unionists think this is some kind of joke but you are playing with people's lives and pushing families into poverty to make the SNP have to make unpopular decisions is beyond repugnant

  7. Just as they did during the referendum Labour in Scotland are now, after their supine acceptance of the Scotland Bill, determined to do the Tories' dirty work. Truly disgusting.

Angus Robertson MP wants the English and Welsh denied the right to the same shopping hours as us Scots under the lie it will affect Scottish workers wages. So who are the second class citizens now. But he is happy to see Scottish steel jobs lost by toeing the EU line.

  10. I hope all you bitter unionists paid attention when Mundell was asked by Mhairi Black to confirm that any financial mitigation used against the Tax credit cuts would not be removed from Scotland and classed as income he refused.

So not only are you so full of bitterness & hate and desire to see an SNP government fail your willing to inflict hardship on low income families and happily let Westminster remove any mitigation put in place by the Scottish government.

Loyalty to a party or union is one thing, wishing pain and suffering on the Scottish low paid is another and something I find despicable

  11. Aldo you honestly still believe that mate, ignore the fact that the UK government is so desperate to keep this subsidy junky of country simply because they love us and love paying for us... All the while allowing corporations & big business away with over 100 Bilkion a year of Tax evasion.

Ignoring the fact that between Whisky export duty, overspending on defence & public spending of approx 3-4 Billion than would be required in an iScotland you still kid yourself and believe Scotland would be worse off Independent...

    Seriously...

    1. There is no whisky export duty. It doesn't exist. We don't tax exports.

This is an example of where nationalist propaganda, half truth and spin has given way to outright lying. Any taxation associated with the Scotch whisky industry that would be due to come to an independent Scottish government is already attributed to Scotland.

And even with our whisky - and our haggis and shortbread and oil & gas - we are 14 billion pounds short of what we need to spend annually. This is a fact. And, until the separatists can close that gap, they will have no economic credibility.

    2. I agree, GWC. Their ideal scenario is to have UK government cuts inflicted only on England, Wales and NI - with Scotland being exempt. Sorry, that's not how it works. If you want to avoid UK govt cuts or increase spending, you have to raise the money yourself. It's only fair.

They wont do it though. They are terrified of losing their support. But they will lose support anyway, if they turn down the opportunity to "tax toffs and help ra poor", as the left sees it.
