Is any journalist going to point out to Starmer that he can't believe Palestinians have an "inalienable" right to statehood unless a Labour government will recognise the State of Palestine without Israel's consent?

Journalism is ultimately about choices.  Should the public know about a story - do you report, or not?  Should the public care about a story - do you give it prominence, or bury it with a tokenistic mention?  Should the public be properly informed about a story - do you ask probing questions of those involved, or just take everything at face value and invite the population to do the same?

Large sections of the unionist-oriented Scottish media have decided Nicola Sturgeon's deletion of her Whatsapp messages related to Covid is the gravest political scandal since Watergate.  I'm not saying they're necessarily wrong to care about it, and as far as Jason Leitch's now-notorious hubristic remark is concerned, all I can say is that if you've only just noticed the nature of that man, you really should have been paying more attention.

But what is being neglected while our attention is directed towards the Sturgeon story?  Mass murder and ethnic cleansing, some would say outright genocide, is being perpetrated by the Israeli state in Gaza.  Only a few days ago, Keir Starmer indicated through one of his lieutenants that he was choosing this moment of all moments to betray Labour's promise that the State of Palestine would be recognised unconditionally by an incoming Labour government.  Instead, the commitment was being downgraded to a nominal one to recognise Palestine only when that was acceptable to Israel and only after Israel has negotiated a two-state solution.  Given that the Israeli government has explicitly stated that a Palestinian state will never be acceptable and it will never negotiate a two-state solution, the new Starmer pledge is about as meaningful as a promise to recognise Narnia just as soon as that is acceptable to Mordor.

And yet yesterday, presumably spooked by focus groups or private polling showing potentially dangerous consequences of Labour tacking too closely to Israel, Starmer announced that Palestinians had an "inalienable" right to statehood that could not be vetoed by a neighbouring state.  Where were the journalists queuing up to point out that this new statement is utterly irreconcilable with the one of a few days ago, just as so many Starmer statements and Starmer policies directly contradict what he's said in the past?  The logic of an inalienable right to a Palestinian state is that a Labour government would recognise it on day one, with or without Netanyahu's permission.  There is no practical bar to doing that, because the State of Palestine has had undisputed legal existence since at least 2012, when it was officially accepted by the UN as a non-member observer state.  No fewer than 72% of UN members recognise the State of Palestine, including several EU countries.  Labour would simply be bringing the UK into line with the likes of Sweden, Poland, Brazil and Iceland.

So what is it to be?  A Schrodinger's recognition whereby a Palestinian Embassy in London both exists and doesn't exist?  Are journalists interested in asking these questions, and if not, do they even care that the man who is highly likely to be Prime Minister before this calendar year is out is a demonstrably unprincipled chancer?

Before we finish, a reminder that the Scot Goes Pop opinion poll fundraiser urgently needs a boost - let's not leave it in limbo for months.  It's important that not all Scottish opinion polling is commissioned by anti-independence clients - we need to make sure that occasionally questions are asked that Yes supporters want asked.  Donations can be made via the fundraiser page HERE.

  1. SNP deserve credit for leader's standpoint on Gaza.

  2. David Lammy clarified Labour's position in an interview on the Today programme this morning.

    1. And what was the "clarification"?

    2. He stated that the characterization in your third paragraph is substantively a misrepresentation.

    3. He must possess remarkable foresight, then, given that I didn't write that paragraph until after the Today programme was broadcast.

Your understandable reluctance to set out what Lammy said is duly noted.

  3. Starmer will recognise Palestine when IHRA says it’s not antisemitic to stop the war. Good luck with that…

  4. James says " a demonstrably unprincipled chancer" - he certainly is and there are a lot of them about. Of course SNP numpties think their party is the exception. Good article James.
Starmer is doing the trick Sturgeon used re independence - state a range of opinions/plans and then when it suits claim you said this - this being what suits at the time. The general public find it hard to keep up and understand what the policy is - so don't see the deception.
Some Zionists believe that God will only come down to earth in Israel when the land is cleansed of the Muslims. Religious Bampots like them see god on their side to commit genocide and/or ethnic cleansing. This is what the UK supports. How can bampot Zionists like them ever accept any Muslims never mind a Palestinian state.
It does seem to me that there are a lot on both sides who want to wipe the other out but Israel holds all the cards at present in doing that ( weapons of mass destruction ). Funny how Blair went to war with the lie Iraq had WMD but the rogue state that everyone knew had WMD the UK sold them more weapons. Israel probably has chemical weapons as well. No UN weapons inspectors for them.

  5. Another demonstrably unprincipled character is that mad as a bucket of frogs British/Irish liar Skier.

    1. You made me look. I see Skier's posting charts and analysis. Amusingly, he's reading the reduced support for the SNP among Yessers as a sign of converts to independence among the 🇬🇧 parties. Surely the case for indy is finally dawning on Labour and Tory voters alike, he argues…

    2. Skier would argue Black is White if he thought it helped the SNP. He is also on record as saying that he has lied to promote the SNP and sees no problem in doing so.

  6. The cognitive dissonance is at Stratospheric levels in the Nicola fan club also known as WGD. The numpties initially ignore the deleted Whattsapp messages - oor Nicola cannae do anything bad you know - now they are cock a hoop as they seem to think Nicola had another secret plan.

Legerwood says:- " Ms Sturgeon's statement released today. She gave them enough rope then this - brilliant"

There is nothing brilliant about it. Just a pathetic attempt to give numpties something to hold on. I'm betting legerwood was in the crowd in George sq in Nov 2019 queing to get selfies with Taylor Sturgeon. Fair enough if she had actually delivered Scottish independence but she faked it for 9 years and then ran away. We can look forward to another litany of lies at the Covid Inquiry. Please please - not 8 hours of lying this time.

What is Sturgeon hiding - her messages with MI5????

    2. I think there may have been some compromising messages about her role in the Salmond affair that she didn't want to be seen. Remember her...ahem 'husband' set up the Vietnam group on WhatsApp to let the alphabetties coordinate their stories.

    3. To use the words Sturgeon used on TV about Salmond - This is not about Salmond's conduct but Sturgeon's. This is an issue about Nicola Sturgeon's conduct. Yes she has not faced criminal charges but there were concerns raised that suggest she did not always behave in this respect as she should have done.

Sturgeon has form re deleting Whattsapp messages - she did it re the Salmond persecution - " I have handed over everything that is relevant to the remit of the Committee".

So that's two Inquiries where Sturgeon decides what is relevant to the Inquiry and decides what messages she will hand over. Staggering levels of arrogance. She got away with it in Holyrood. Will she again.

I'll tell the SNP numpties one thing - pissing off the Covid Inquiry will lose a lot of votes.

    4. Felix - very much a possibility but probably they got deleted a while ago. Only the dumbest of dumb (like Ruddick did) would keep them and Sturgeon is a lot of things but she ain't dumb. They learned from Ruddick's cock up in keeping her Vietnam messages.
I was only jesting about MI5 messages being deleted. Sturgeon would meet them in a car park in Uddingston at midnight.

    1. Please release Me - I think you have fallen off the edge of your seat far too often and banged your head. You cannae even read - I said I was jesting. I feel sorry for your hamster. The Salmond persecution by Sturgeon's gang is true. I think it is nicophants like you who are more interested in Sturgeon's pants.

  8. I think that it is obvious that the creation of a disjointed Palestinian State would require agreement from Jordan, Israel, and Egypt as a bare minimum. The problem is that Jordan would want the west bank of the Jordan back, Israel currently has a Netanyahoo government, and Egypt doesn't want Islamic extremists in or near Egypt. It's an issue where Britain doesn't really matter much.

I think that makes two comments on the article....

  10. A perfect example of why what counts is what politicians do, not what they say, was English Labour in Scotland leader Sarwar on the telly this morning trying to convince gullible voters that Labour would devolve more powers to Holyrood. From the Smith Commission in 2015 onwards Labour have opposed more powers being devolved to Scotland. Sarwar is just another Britnat chancer.
Independence is the answer. Devolution is a sticking plaster that is looking very tatty now.

  11. Starmer does soundbites. He'll say anything to get a few more votes in the next election. That's why he wanted rid of JeremybCorbyn, and was happy to stab him in the back. In doing so, he's in hock to the board of deputies, who supplied the stiletto. So don't expect his latest statements to have any weight at all.

  12. The WGD numpties are frothing about Sturgeon deleting her messages. It's all the media's fault, it's all that ambulance chasing lawyer Amar's fault but this post from Alex Clark sums up how silly they are - Clark says:- " The police will have no interest whatsoever in any Nicola Sturgeon deleted messages." So how does Clark know this exactly?
The best laugh for me was Sturgeon saying she was following Scottish Government guidelines by deleting her messages. And who is in charge of the Government - Sturgeon. In addition the current FM Yousaf and other ministers and civil servants don't seem to have followed these guidelines because they actually kept all their messages. So should Yousaf discipline himself for not following the guidelines. Just the usual lies, deceit and cover up from Sturgeon.
