Day of despair for Douglas Ross as the Tories go backwards in Aberdeen by-election, and are on course to lose TWELVE SEATS in next year's Holyrood vote

I didn't get round to updating my post about the Survation poll yesterday, so for the sake of completeness here are the party political voting intention numbers, with more good news for the SNP and the Yes movement.

Scottish voting intentions for Westminster:

SNP 52% (+1)
Labour 20% (-1)
Conservatives 18% (-2)
Liberal Democrats 8% (+2)

Scottish Parliament constituency ballot:

SNP 54% (+1)
Conservatives 19% (-1)
Labour 18% (-)
Liberal Democrats 8% (+1)

Scottish Parliament regional list ballot:

SNP 43% (+2)
Labour 19% (+1)
Conservatives 17% (-1)
Greens 10% (-)
Liberal Democrats 7% (-1)
Brexit Party 2% (-)
UKIP 1% (-)

Holyrood seats projection (with changes from 2016 result): SNP 69 (+6), Labour 25 (+1), Conservatives 19 (-12), Greens 11 (+5), Liberal Democrats 5 (n/c)

For anyone who still doubts that the list vote is generally the more important ballot, please note that the Tories are in second place in the constituency ballot, Labour are in second place in the list ballot, and that translates firmly into Labour being in second place in the seats projection.  The exact reverse occurred in 2016 - Labour clung onto second place in the constituencies, but were pushed into third place in terms of seats due to what happened on the list.

The phenomenon of the Tories' status as the largest opposition party being seriously threatened should perhaps be seen as a 'house effect' of Survation's methodology, because the last Survation poll showed something similar, but other firms have not corroborated those findings in the meantime.  That said, there's no doubt that the Tories are now performing much more poorly than at the peak of the revival under Ruth Davidson.  The new leader Douglas Ross must take his share of the blame for that, because the position seems to have worsened slightly since he took over, and that's coincided with dire personal ratings for him being reported in a couple of polls.

The situation the Tories now find themselves in is arguably reminiscent of where the SNP were just after they elected John Swinney as leader twenty years ago.  They had it all worked out - Alex Salmond, for all his qualities, had supposedly been too abrasive to make the ultimate breakthrough, whereas John Swinney was more like a friendly older brother, impossible to dislike, a bit of a reassuring bank manager figure in the mould of John Smith.  There was just one snag - the voters didn't react to him in the way they were supposed to react, and polls consistently showed that he commanded less confidence than all three of the other main party leaders.  The SNP weren't deterred - they thought the public just hadn't had enough of a chance to get to know Swinney, and he would become popular with time.  But after four years they finally had to admit to themselves that the dial wasn't moving, resulting in the unexpected comeback for Alex Salmond that changed Scottish politics forever.

Same story with Douglas Ross - the public are supposed to like him, but the public haven't read the script provided for them, and my suspicion is they won't change their minds.  How long will it take for the penny to drop?

More evidence that the tide has gone out on the Conservatives can be found in the result of the Kincorth, Nigg & Cove by-election, which although a routine SNP hold, showed a swing of approximately 4% from Tory to SNP.

Kincorth, Nigg & Cove by-election result (first preferences):

SNP 47.4% (+6.7)
Conservatives 20.2% (-1.3)
Labour 12.2% (-5.3)
Independent - Finlayson 10.5% (-0.4)
Liberal Democrats 3.6% (-1.6)

  1. Hey James,
I noticed that the question in this poll was, if an election was held tomorrow and the question was 'should Scotland be an independent nation' how would you vote?

I can't help thinking that asking DK's to give an opinion about an 'election held tomorrow' would push a lot of undecideds to No.

I think if the question was a far better 'When Scotland holds the next independent referendum and the question....and so forth.

This removes the scary (for undecideds) 'election held tomorrow'

    Your Thoughts about this?

  3. Very disappointed to see Robertson and Somerville have been selected. Thought I would get that out there now because probably from next May Humza will probably lock me up for saying that. Unless of course like a true authoritarian he makes his law retrospective. Naw he wouldn't do that - "hang on a minute" as Brewdog used to say, they have previous with that type of thing. Ask Salmond.

  4. I wonder how. The Red Tories would do if they embraced Independence?
It doesn't matter what the LibDems do anymore...they are irrelevant now.

  6. Following on from the Dec2019 GE win by the SNP Sturgeon requested a sec 30 from Johnson. Johnson replied saying pissof you ain't getting one. He also repeated the once in a generation lie in his formal letter of reply.

Did Sturgeon reply and call out Johnsons once in a generation lie.. NO.

All you head in the sand mob - you won't be able to say nobody told me that the current SNP leadership have no intention of delivering independence. You will only have yourself to blame.

    1. ....so what choices do I have to vote for in the constituency?
You keep telling me who not to vote for. Should we just stay at home and let Unionist Parties run Scotland?

Same old rant but never a solution.

    4. Julia - I never told you who to vote for. I never said not to vote SNP unlike SS who told me not to vote SNP. I would never vote for a Britnat party.

Change the SNP leadership is my message. Put a mandate in the SNP manifesto for ACTUAL independence is my message. I want the SNP to revert to what it once was - a true party of independence.

So Julia you are wrong I just provided you with a solution.

    5. IfS, what's the difference between johnson telling scots what to do and you telling the snp what to do given you are not a member?

Do you rant at anyone / any country that doesn't do what you demand? It's classic unionist.

Why don't you get off your lazy erse and join the snp, entitling you to a say in how it's run?

Why don't you just not vote SNP? Nobody's forcing you. You are starting to bore everyone with this. It's the same on every blogpost. Your comments have no point to them at all; you just repeat the same stuff that everyone already knows.

I really don't like the Tories, but I don't spend my time constantly repeating that over and over again. People already know it.

Vote ISP if you like. Or Greens. If you have a good alternative to party you think people should consider, give is the positives about them.

Negative 'I hate party X' doesn't win over voters. You need to talk about a positive alternative.

    7. Under Alex Salmond, the SNP ditched its manifesto commitment to outright independence and replaced it with a mere commitment to a referendum. Why do you want to undo his good work?

    8. SSS - for clarity my head in the sand mob comment does not apply to you.

Only a fanatical Britnat like you would defend Sturgeon on absolutely everything. Fanatical support of Sturgeon because you know she will never deliver independence.

An SNP government giving millions to the Britnat media that is owned by billionaires that every day attacks Scottish independence but not a penny to any independence supporting media. The longer the SNP members keep selecting people like Robertson the longer it will take to get independence. That will be down to SNP members listening to Britnats like SSS.

    9. SSS - lies lies and lies - that's you.

"Why don't you just not vote SNP" the words of SSS - he says he is an SNP member but he is on record as telling me to not vote SNP - first SNP member I have ever heard telling someone not to vote for the SNP. He also tells people not to vote for any other independence parties either.

      SSS is a Tory Britnat

  7. There is a Panelbase poll in the field. I got an email to take part but got chucked out as too many from my demographic already answered. The clue was asking which part of Scotland I lived. It asked which electoral region in Scotland I lived in.

  12. Of course even if he concedes defeat trump is still the President until Biden gets sworn in on January 20th. Will he go quietly or will he spend the next 10 weeks adopting a scorched earth policy doing everything he can to stop the transition from going smoothly?

Joe Biden is no stranger to Britain. He has known every prime minister since Margaret Thatcher. At least until now.

For Mr Biden has yet to meet Boris Johnson, a man he’s called a “physical and emotional clone” of Donald Trump. And the two men have their differences.

Mr Biden opposes Brexit. He warned publicly last month that a UK-US trade deal was dependent on Brexit not damaging peace in Northern Ireland. Many observers believe this will mean that when President Biden seeks to repair transatlantic relationships, he may focus more of his attention on Paris and Berlin than London.

    And.

It might be 170 years since his ancestors left, but the president-elect is fiercely proud of Irish roots.

In 2016, he said: "Being Irish, without fear of contradiction, has shaped my entire life."

I guess that's NI staying in the EU.

Requests to pay the BBC license fee in oor hoose gets much the same response - we're Scots!
I sincerely hope this shows that Biden appreciates Scotland's predicament.

  16. As we've see in the past few days, Trump would refuse the American people a Section 30 like the British or Chinese do, if only he could.

By contrast, the Russians let the former soviet states have their independence.

  17. I see from your Twatter feed that anything less than absolute support for the disgusting Biden/Harris combo is being attacked by the usual suspects.

We know Trump is attacked as a racist, but there's never any evidence. Apart from him wanting gang rapists put to death. Which is the same position Biden took at the time so that's not real evidence. It's just another default attack. You are the enemy so you are a racist, sexist, fascist, nazi.

We know there is 50 years of evidence to convict Biden of being a racist. The crime bill is the least of it. Urban jungles, shelf stacking black women, personal friendship with KKK members, delivering the eulogy at their funerals. "If you don't vote for me, you ain't black!" His own VP pick denounced him as a raving bigot who opposed desegregating schools. Seems to have vanished down the memory hole.
A literal mountain of evidence but all rejected by blind cultish adoration.

The same goes for the attacks on trump as being a Fascist. He's been an arsehole his entire life and an obviously corrupt businessman. Actual fascism count, zero.

That Greenwald article should be required reading, but it won't be.

It was only matter of weeks ago that the Dems were attacking the Postmaster General and accusing him of interfering in the election and potential fraud involving postal votes. Remember that? I didn't dream it.
Have a think about this election , where Biden had a massive lead in those last 5 states and suddenly the count is stopped, Democrat observers are thrown out and then tens of thousands of Trump votes start appearing from nowhere. It stinks. And you know it stinks, but people are willing to overlook the biggest voter fraud in a supposedly mature democracy sing 2014. All due to TDS.

If anyone think this won't come back and eat them up in the future then they don't deserve a vote, voice, opinion or oxygen.

Trump is a bad man. Climate change apart he was better for Scotland and the rest of the World then bomber o'bama.

Republican states have a far better record on Covid19 deaths than democrat ones. The governor of NY rejected the imposition of Federal policies as an act of war. It even made the papers, but we are supposed to blame every death on the orange man. Makes you sick.

Especially when Saint Nicola has killed a higher proportion of Scotland.

Is it possible to ever have any political coverage which relies on telling people the facts? CN Lied, NBC lied, ABC lied, the NY Times, Washpo and the rest lied. Twitter and Facebook censored anything anti-biden or pro-Trump.

If this election campaign had occurred in any other country we'd be talking about massive corruption, making banana-republic comparisons, and talking about illegitimate regimes.

If you think that's price worth paying to remove the Orange man then you are not and never were any kind of democrat and are a danger to my freedom.

Of course we need cases / day to keep coming down. If R continues its downward trajectory, then that will continue.
