Alba committee election results - this time I've been elected!

At this point I can now say a heartfelt thank you for the patience of non-Alba readers of this blog over the last few months while I was writing a disproportionate number of self-promotion posts for the Alba internal elections, which proved to be a longer process than anyone anticipated due to the re-run of the office bearer elections and the consequent postponement of the NEC elections.  I'm delighted and somewhat relieved to be able to report that my persistence did actually pay off in the end - over the weekend I was successfully elected to the Finance & Audit Committee, the Disciplinary Committee, and the Constitution Review Group.  The full list of everyone elected has now been published on the Alba website and can be found HERE (although you'll almost certainly need to be logged in).

I'm also pleased to report that there has been much more transparency than there was after the NEC ballot last month, and this time the full results, including every single stage of the complicated Single Transferable Vote count process, have been sent to the candidates.  It looks like the intention is that the same full information will be made available to all party members too, although at time of writing that hasn't happened yet.

So I'm returning to the Finance & Audit Committee after a gap of just over a year (I was previously on it as an NEC nominee), and I'm joining the Disciplinary Committee for the first time.  On the other hand, I'm no longer a member of the Appeals Committee, which I've been an elected member of since last February, because of course once I was elected to the Disciplinary Committee, I was no longer eligible to be a candidate for the Appeals Committee.  So of the four committees/groups I was a candidate for, the only one I missed out on was the Conference Committee - and in the immortal words that Meatloaf very nearly sang, "three out of four ain't bad".

Looking back over the last few weeks, my result in the Membership Support Convener election was probably better than I expected and I came within a whisker of being elected, my result in the ordinary NEC ballot was probably worse than I expected, and my result in these latest committee elections was probably better than I expected.  So the lesson is perhaps to always set preconceptions to one side, because each election is a fresh event and there's never any way of knowing which way it will go.

Congratulations to all of the other successful candidates, and I look forward to working with them over the coming year.

  2. Brilliant James, fantastic!

"thank you for the patience of non-Alba readers of this blog"

OMOV has been food for thought. The delegate system indeed favours the well off, the mobile, and those with time to spare. Other parties, the SNP for instance, should take note.

    1. Agreed. A prompt and detailed release of the voting figures is just as good to hear. This stuff must be transparent for every political party. I'd make it required by law, myself.

Now, don't let that power go to your head. No "work" campervans, you hear? ;)

  6. Pleased for you James. Well done. Although I said I wouldn't vote Alba in the UK GE ( it probably doesn't make any difference as Alba will probably not be putting up a candidate) as I no longer want to be represented in that House of Horrors in Westminster I still plan to vote Alba at Holyrood elections.

  8. Watching Kate Forbes at the UK Covid Inquiry is a timely reminder of her abilities. She was appointed out of the blue as Finance Secretary and immediately had to deliver a budget. If that wasn't enough she then had to deal with all the financial issues of the pandemic - which to say the least was extremely challenging but even more so when it involved diddies like Johnson, Hancock, Gove.
Looking at the talent in Yousaf's current cabinet it only highlights how he prioritised internal SNP politics over providing the best people to govern Scotland. How many people think Robison is better equipped as Finance Secretary than Forbes. The reason Robison is there is she is part of Sturgeon's gang and Forbes isnae. Personally, I would have Forbes as Finance Secretary not leader - nothing to do with her religion. I just don't think she is that bothered about independence.

    1. I usually agree with much of what you say IFS, however I disagree with you regarding Shona Robison. I think she’s very competent and an excellent Finance Secretary.

    2. Kate Forbes would have Scotland out of the union quicker than you could switch a light off

    3. Forbes states that not only was she not invited to Sturgeon's gold command meetings she didnae even know they were taking place or who attended them. There were no minutes of these very obviously important secret meetings. When eventually Forbes was invited to one she had to ask what is this meeting?

  9. When John REDACTOR MAN Swinney pitches up in front of the Covid Inquiry I really hope he gets a hard time. He didnae have to redact much this time just deleted everything. This guy showed utter contempt to the Court of Session, the Scotgov's own lawyers, the Scottish Parliament, the Salmond Persecution Parliament Inquiry, the Covid Inquiry and the Scottish public.

  10. Meanwhile on WGD Proud Cybernat says " VOTE INDY " well that's the point ya numpty we cannae voted for Indy due to Sturgeon's gang taking it off the table. All we can do is vote for a political party or not.

  11. John REDACTOR MAN Swinney actually thinks that all the UK governments should have been treated as equals during Covid. Delusional nonsense by Swinney and shows how Scotland will never be independent with people like him in charge. Scotland is a colony Swinney and Westminster will never see the "devolved nations" as they call them as equals. Lots of the Tories don't even believe or want devolution but Swinney thinks Johnston should have treated Sturgeon as an equal.

  13. WGD liar and arch SNP propagandist Irish Skier has, after many years of showing the net rating for politicians, decided in a post to now show only the positive rating without the negative rating netted off it. Why - because Sturgeon is now a nett negative rating and he couldnae possible show Sturgeon having an unfavourable rating so he changes what he is posting. It's pretty desperate stuff by Skier. Suck it up ya nicophant - Sturgeon's popularity is plunging and it has a long way to go yet - way down low - probably even lower than little Sunak.

  14. It seems to go from bad to worse for the SNP. Hope it’s no the beginning of the end for them but if is been wondering if through time Alba could become a force and be the main nationalist party, despite the Salmond factor. Or is more likely the SNP could improve radically and return to former glories.

    4. Really hope so. Because let’s face it: they’re getting scalped.

Trouble is: Angus Robertson and his missus surely have other ideas. Are the members really so gullible to be conned into voting for EVEN MORE CONTINUITY when the party’s burning in a crater? Place your bets…

Scotland needs so much better than this.

    5. Angus Robertson unlikely to win in debates with Forbes.

  16. Sturgeon at the UK Covid Inquiry tomorrow. Will there be adoring crowds waiting for her wanting selfies or will she get the EGG MAN Murphy treatment. 17. The SNP/ Alba MPs may make good points in debates but they are ignored. They will never be in power in Westminster. A waste of time in terms of changing anything but their presence provides Westminster with their acceptance of the system and validates Westminster authority over Scotland.
The SNP have settled in NOT settled up. The SNP MPs are part of the Westminster system. Now Blowhard Blackford wants to settle more of them on to the red benches in the House of Lords. Give them another 5 years and expect Lord Wishart of Perth to be enobled along with others for services rendered to the British state.

  23. Sturgeon morphed from the wee teary wumin in the morning to the Sturgeonator in the afternoon. The Britnat KC got slaughtered in the afternoon. Just the odd lie from Sturgeon this time.
Bizarre stuff - the Britnat trying to insist Sturgeon was secretly working all the time on Scottish independence during the pandemic and Sturgeon continually saying she wasn't. Obviously, the Britnat started from the premise that any decent independence leader would always be wanting your country to be independent - which is true - but that ain't Sturgeon. She is British and an imposter - to use her own words.

As others have pointed out she managed to easily find her Whattsapp messages re Salmond from years back but today she said she has been regularly deleting them since she was advised to do so in 2007. So not as long a session as in the Parliamentary Inquiry and way way fewer lies but still capable of a lie when required.
