Introducing the #Referendum2023 Countdown Clock

It just suddenly struck me this morning how astonishingly close we are to Scotland's 2023 independence referendum. I know I speak on behalf of all readers of Scot Goes Pop when I say that I don't have the slightest doubt it's going to happen - the majority SNP-Green government have, to their immense credit, allowed us all to relax thanks to their #2023ReferendumGuarantee.  As they've said repeatedly: no ifs, no buts, no maybes, it's a nailed-on certainty, come hell or high water, Scotland will be going to the polls next year to decide whether or not to become an independent country.  Don't worry about questions like "how?" - our leaders are the foremost experts on process and strategy, and the secret route-map to Referendum 2023 has been meticulously planned for years.  All we have to do is just sit back and let it happen.  That's what the #2023ReferendumGuarantee is all about.  And 2023 is only SEVEN AND A HALF MONTHS away.  Time to get excited, people!

To celebrate this momentous landmark, I'm now going to unveil the Scot Goes Pop #Referendum2023 Countdown Clock, which will be periodically updated...

There are just 235 days until the earliest possible date for #Referendum2023 (5th January)

There are just 585 days until the latest possible date for #Referendum2023 (21st December)

(Note: the Countdown Clock calculations assume that tradition will be maintained by holding #Referendum2023 on a Thursday, and that it will be before Christmas.)

Which leaves only one question to be answered: what colour tie will Huw Edwards wear?  #ReferendumNight2023 is going to be MEGA!

  1. The two ferries will be in operation before Sturgeon ever delivers independence. All we have to do in Scotland is suck up the broken promises of Westminster and Holyrood - that seems to be our lot in life - while at the same time Westminster sucks up all our oil/gas and electricity. In the future thanks to Sturgeon Westminster will be sucking up all our water as well.

    1. If Sturgeon had not delayed and made a bollocks of the census we would probably know by now the numbers. Sturgeon delayed the census by a year, costing additional millions, all so they could debate how to ask questions about trans people. The Scottish government is starting to look more and more like a social work dept. All this money wasted could have helped Scots with their energy bills.

  3. Demographic change is a factor that cannot be overlooked. Time is not on your side. The 2021 census will reveal that only around 80% of people in Scotland are Scottish-born.

    1. Robert, its a pity Sturgeon wasted all that money on the census she could have just asked you.

    2. Yet the membership organiser of our local branch is definitely English. I'm not worried.

    3. There are many English supporters of independence in both Wales and Scotland, but unsurpringly, thay represent a tiny proportion of those hailing from England. In Wales, the overwhelming majority are oblivious or downright hostile.

  4. Unlike Helen of Troy whose face launched a thousand ships Sturgeon will go down in history as Nicola of Dreghorn whose face sunk a couple of ferries.

  5. If nothing else, the next excuse for delay should be funny to hear. What will they plump for?

Mumble something about a new covid variant in the autumn/winter?
Blame the cost of living crisis, "can't think about a referendum whilst we're trying to deal with inflation"?
Pretend they really definitely actually wanted one but Boris said no again, so we have to "send him another message"?
Say nothing, and quietly hope everyone forgets what year it is?

    Stay tuned, or something.

    1. Robert, another excuse could be " we are too busy defending our selves in a court case regarding some missing funds for a referendum to actually have a referendum. Now is not the time."

  6. Not only is numpty Dr Jim a nasty character he is also lacking in knowledge about the Treaty of Union 1706/7.

The bad Dr says: "...... mostly people didn't know a thing about it until it was too late so the people of Scotland had no say in the matter........" As there was no democracy in Scotland Jimbo is correct that they had no direct say in the matter and no real power to stop it. However, he is wrong about people not knowing about it. 80 petitions were sent to the Scottish Parliament by the people against the Treaty and only one petition for the Treaty. There was also significant rioting.

It seems Jimbo's 50 years a member of the SNP has not taught him well about the events creating the union.

  7. Again, demographic change cannot be ignored. This is undermining the independence movement in Wales, where whole "communities" have no association with the country whatsoever. At the census of 2001, 87.13% of Scotland's population were born in Scotland. The figure for 2011 was 83.32%. The 2021 census will, no doubt show that less than 80% are Scottish born.

    1. I was going to say a figure of less than 80% would be a wake up call for the SNP to get a move on but they'll probably deride the people of Scotland for upsetting the poor hard-done-by English.

  8. Operation Branchform

It is being reported that the SNP top dog Peter Murrell refused to let the police see the SNP accounts. If true it looks like Scotland has its very own King and Queen who can tell the police and COPS what to do and what not to do. If only Mark Hirst also had the power to tell the police to pissoff when a team of six police officers ransacked his house over complaints made by Brindley and some alphabetties. Complaints the Sheriff threw out of court and Hirst is now suing the Lord Advocate and Chief Constable.
