"Is that legal?"

I'm sorry, I know there are far more important things going in the world, today of all days, but I just cannot resist posting this, it's just too good to ignore.  Stuart Campbell is clearly smarting about me pointing out last night that his claim on Tuesday that there is "zero" chance of a pro-independence majority in the Scottish Parliament after 2026 has been left looking a bit silly by today's Norstat poll showing the SNP and Greens on course for a majority between them.  His response has been to post two catty tweets. The first was mocking me for mentioning the possibility of standing on the Central Scotland list as a pro-indy independent candidate (which yes, I meant seriously, but it's just one of several possibilities I'm mulling over now that Alba have left me as a free agent through no choice of my own, and it's not the most likely one).

But the second tweet was a truly bonkers whinge about some obscure thing he's alleging I did to a blog comment (without, of course, providing a shred of evidence) on THE TWELFTH OF AUGUST, and which four months later he's suddenly decided is a scandal on a par with Watergate.  What makes this just sheer bloody exquisite perfection is Rab Dickson's "Is that legal?" reply, which you just know he meant absolutely seriously, and which forced Mr Campbell to patiently explain to him like a toddler that yes, Rab, of course it's legal.

A great pity.  For half a second I thought I was facing the sequel to the "Wings Of Justice" campaign, and that I might end up with a policeman at my door asking me "now then, what's this I 'ear about you nobbling blog comments?"

Maybe Campbell would have had more luck with me than he did with Dugdale.  But alas, we shall never know.

  1. He's obsessed with you, James. Take it as a weird sort of compliment.

  2. Did you edit the comment in question, James?

    1. No I didn't, actually (which makes this even funnier).

  3. Forgive me for bursting the Rev's bubble, but there are two little flaws in his accusation. I can't see why James would have called him "Stew", and more to the point am I not right in saying that admins of blogs cannot edit comments? So what he's suggesting is physically impossible.

    1. Well, you're half right. I believe Campbell uses a blogging platform that allows editing of comments, and he does that quite liberally from what I've seen. But I use the Blogger platform, which is extemely basic and doesn't offer any facility for the editing of comments. So yes, what he's alleging isn't even possible .

  4. Uncharacteristic of "Scotland's greatest living journalist" to make allegations without evidence. Maybe he's not what he was.

    3. Campbell was, is and always will be a chancer with an eye for a quick buck courtesy of the more gullible in society. My opinion of course. And he has done well financially within his bubble. He stepped outside of it some years ago, tested the waters for a possible political party or active role in politics, realised that most of the very small number of people who knew of him saw him for the cut and paste moron that he is, and rapidly retreated back into his bubble. The vast majority of the population have never heard of him. The BBC used to use him as a useful idiot, but even they realised what he was. He is best ignored, unless you want a giggle at the comments section of his blog. Wonderfully imaginative conspiracy theories and lies and nonsense from his mouth frother cult followers.

  5. Campbell is best ignored but James, please don't waste your time standing as an independent pro-indy candidate. What is the point?

    1. The logic would be as follows: if the SNP are no longer seriously pursuing independence, and if Alba have completely lost the plot, there may be an argument for offering people a genuine independence alternative. However, that argument would be weakened if the new poll is typical of what we see closer to the election, because then the pro-independence majority would be touch and go and there would be a danger of screwing things up by taking votes (even a few votes) away from the main pro-indy parties.

    1. I'm not sure that's really the correct vocabulary for standing on the list. But regardless of what I do, there are likely to be multiple pro-indy independents standing, I don't think there's much doubt about that.

    2. I’m sure they will be others but all will fail- even if they have a good message. It will be lost in the furore of the election with the majority unionist news media blanking out candidates excepting where they think it may hurt the SNP, Greens. All other parties promoting independence are out of the race already.

  7. James, I think that you need to ignore the baiting. Some people like to egg combatants on, others are turned off by these spats. Stuart Campbell fulfills a role, but so do you. There's a need for those who are willing to speak truth to power, however uncomfortable that may be. You have demonstrated that you are willing and able to do that. Please try to ignore or avoid Stuart Campbell.

    1. What role does Stuart Campbell fulfil? If you hate breast binding, I suppose he's your man, but he doesn't seem to have many other passions these days (apart from burning everything else down until he gets his way on the trans stuff, which is of interest to about 0.00001% of the population).

    2. An occasional twitter post, as you put it, is hugely amplified. And they are not occasional over the piece. You’ve been caught out and called out. Leave it alone. Away back to WOS. How is Stu anyway?

    3. Of course what Stew's devoted number one superfan (Anon at 12.40) is also overlooking is that when Stew does post articles about James (which he actually does frequently) he often does it without directly mentioning James by name, so it wouldn't show up in search. There's been an example of that in the last week.

  11. Absolutely ridiculous cheek of "Peter Campbell", whoever "Peter Campbell" may be, to post a cheap personal attack on James here and think he's got some sort of God-given right to have that comment remain up. If James says he didn't edit the comment, I believe him, but by the same token if it had been edited in that way I would say it got exactly the treatment it deserved.
