Just a quick note to let you know I have a new analysis piece at The National about the new poll suggesting a commitment to republicanism would increase Yes support by five percentage points. You can read it HERE.
Yeah, read that, I agree. By all means have a referendum on the monarchy after Independence, but don't exclude more and more voters for YES by divisive "policies". Just on a side point, from a comment btl there:
"They have all sworn binding oaths to that foreign throne"
should be:
"They have all sworn binding oaths to that foreign throne WITHIN THE LAW"
As I said on the previous article we do not need to give people reasons to vote against independence. If there is a majority for a republic then the majority can win a vote on the matter. Similarly for EU membership or lots of other stuff that will keep people out the yes tent. If the polls are correct then a majority will vote to rejoin the EU.
Stick to Scotland and its people will be wealthier with independence.
I do see your point IFS and tbh I largely agree with it. It's a difficult thing to balance though. We need to get across that post iScotland can be shaped however Scots desire through referenda and full autonomy. Issues like currency must be absolutely nailed down beforehand though.
Firstly, I somewhat agree with the reticence to say exactly what this poll 'proves" and the posts on here in that respect, BUT I think the Yes Movement should explore issues like this (and others) further and should not be afraid to do so with similar polls in the near future. Secondly, it also raises the perennial question of just how 'radical' we should be in our approach to 'selling' an Indy Scotland before the fact, as opposed to 'not frightening the nags' or creating unnecessary impediments to our potential voters. This needs discussing again. In fact, I seem to remember SNP being slagged-off for being too timid in this respect, in the past.
Lastly - and more pedanticly - I have raised the issue of poll weighting before and wonder if this Norstat one was weighted back to 2014 Indyref
If it was, there is a good possibility that, in reality, it might well show Indy Support on or above the oft-quoted 60% ( all caveats accepted ).
Will be interesting to see what SNP and others in the Yes Camp do with this latest info.

Change the Law and the oath is no more.
I'd like to see a commitment to a post indy referendum on abolishing the Old Firm, Scotland's shame.
ReplyDeleteWhat is the Old Firm? It doesn’t exist any more. Do keep up.
DeleteBaroness Colonel Ruth "Rape Clause" Davidson would be devastated if that were to happen. By the way, is she still pivotal?

“……………..wealthier with independence “
DeleteLOL.
Well, you won't be wealthier, KC, because you're an aristocrat. We're privileged to observe you indulging your lifestyle of leisure.
DeleteSo as I post this I see Jakey wants to give these football supporters a reason not to vote for independence. Oh well there you go.

DeleteSalmond behaved in a misogynistic way to Nicola Sturgeon.
ReplyDeleteI behaved in a misogynistic way to Baroness Ruth (Windbag) Davidson by forgetting to call her Colonel.
DeletePolice Scotland issue statement on Operation Branchform that Alex Salmond's evidence was found to be spurious
