We dodged a bullet today

It's fair to say I'm a touch ambivalent about today's developments.  The demonisation of Alex Salmond has been part of an inexplicably reckless pattern of behaviour from the SNP leadership in recent weeks and months, and the big downside of Hamilton's adjuducation is that it will lead them to feel vindicated and to double down on their factional actions and rhetoric.  That is not in the interests of unity within the movement.  However the alternative, if Hamilton had ruled the other way, simply doesn't bear thinking about.  Earlier today I reported on a poll that suggested Yes might be moving back into the lead after the dip of recent weeks - well, that would have been straight back out of the window if Nicola Sturgeon had been ruled to have breached the ministerial code.  At least now we have a credible chance of winning a pro-independence majority in May, and perhaps even an overall SNP majority.

At the start of the year, Stuart Campbell had a meltdown because I said I was bemused by his apparent belief that he was going to bring down the wildly popular First Minister.  I can't deny there have been one or two moments since then when I wondered if he might just be proved right - but what I could never understand was his certainty that Ms Sturgeon's resignation was inevitable.  That always looked like wishful thinking on his part, and so it has proved.  He's tacitly admitting that tonight by saying (and I paraphrase) "I only didn't see this coming because I didn't consider the possibility that Hamilton might turn out to be an idiot". I think the pretence has now gone - not only does he no longer want independence if he can't get rid of Nicola Sturgeon, he's now actively urging Scots to emigrate to other countries.  Who knows where this remarkable political journey may end.  Will the Wings site end up endorsing Labour and/or the Tories? Could a seat in the House of Lords as Lord Campbell of Bath be on the cards? I'm being semi-facetious, but he's already travelled a long, long way, and sadly some of his readers have been taken along for the ride.

  1. Today's findings confirm that the only way to achieve an independent Scotland is to vote against it in any future referendum! Nothing could be more disastrous for the aspirations of independence now, than voting for independence! We must ensure that there is simply no chance of a referendum ever even coming to pass! Only then will independence be within Scotland's reach!

For this invaluable and productive insight, please send your life's savings to me until independence is secured! (As ever, no refunds!)

  2. I've been through this so many times before. We still live in a Scotland where the media is almost entirely controlled by the English establishment. I've lost count of the times a story was going to 'finish independence'.

The constant bombardment can make you start to doubt even what is the obvious truth if you just step away and let yourself read it. But that's the intent. It doesn't help that a site which used to pretend to be pro-indy and give 'the truth' is now just parroting the UK MSM.

The other night I said my confidence Sturgeon would be cleared had risen from 90% to 95% due to the leaks, Wings etc saying the opposite. But even that had some bravado as you can't help but think that the constant attacks will win out.

I have said many times I preferred Salmond's style and I'm saddened about what seems to be looking a bit of an inglorious end. But politicians are just human and we shouldn't put them on pedestals. There's time for the big man yet if he accepts this judgement and lets things lie. There's a referendum coming and he can still help rally a good % as a figurehead.

The advice I give myself is ignore those you don't trust. Listen to people who are nice, reasonable and thoughtful. I've found this generally works.

As for polls, I predict that all those that have sought to tell voters that Sturgeon was an evil lying witch will now feel the wrath of those they lied to. Wings Included.

Unionism staked everything on today. They would be better showing humility. I doubt they will though.

Nicola Sturgeon's only hope re-uniting everyone will be if she unequivocally, and at full tilt, goes after Independence.

But I think pigs will fly before that happens.

Mine is hearsay, purely anecdotal. I admit that.

I admit that is all I have got to go on because the SNP do not publish these numbers on their website.

Until they provide these, the 12,500 claim will simply be viewed as a highly selective use of numbers. In other words, propaganda.

However, I will take it all back and confess my mistake if the total numbers are revealed.

      Perhaps you can enlighten me?

    7. The 2019 accounts showed that the £2 levy on each member had raised exactly £175,000.

So the official membership that year was 87,500. A drop of 40,000 from the peak of only 3 years before.

Now prove that there were 12,500 new members and tell us the total.

  5. I was a bit confused by Stuart's rant. Unless I missed something, his main grievance was that Hamilton was inferring that no misleading happened - ie. that the FM didn't mislead parliament.

However, looking at the statements Stu published from the report, Hamilton says no such thing. All Hamilton said, was that the FM had "not breached the Ministerial Code" - which as we all know, is a different thing (breaching the ministerial code requires a minister to "knowingly" mislead parliament)

    So Stuart's statement ...

"For James Hamilton, armed with far more evidence, to conclude not merely that the misleading had been accidental but that it didn’t happen at all, is a lie so barefaced as to be breathtaking, and so farcical as to defy any possibility of honest belief."

... I just don't get. As I say, unless there is something I have missed :-/

    1. Implying not inferring.

Hamilton says that despite the mountain of evidence that Murrell breached the ministerial code, he has decided that she didn't because she says she didn't.

  6. Frankly that rather crazed rant by Wings Over Scotland is not worth disentangling. Alex Salmond said recently in sworn testimony that James Hamilton "is a man of great integrity and experience. I appointed him." So having a fit about the Hamilton Report findings based on a complete knowledge of the evidence simply leaves Mr. Campbell looking like the bigot he is.

    ReplyDelete

    1. Now that's a logical fallacy par excellence.

We all know the complete evidence. We saw murrell lie. We heard her lie. We read Salmond's submission where he listed every time she broke the code, and which clause was relevant in each case. We saw Hamilton and Aberdein corroborate Salmond's evidence.

  8. I'm not sure we have dodged a bullet here. It prolongs the agony. Sturgeon has lost some trust in the party. She may have pulled in more members, possibly enough to outweigh those who no longer trust her. And being newbies they are likely to be more compliant, but in being compliant, they may actually be less able to turn the party around.

Overall, I feel that this embeds the divisions and makes moving on from them more difficult. I fear that Sturgeon's performance before the Holyrood Inquiry has set those divisions in deeper than they need be.

Even if there are flaws (big flaws) in the SNP government, yes, yes! YES! ..... an independent Scotland (with or without a SNP government IS worth fighting for! Are you SERIOUSLY suggesting that being under SNP rule would be worse than being under Tory rule? Even if the truth is suppressed for now, it WILL (probably) come out in the future, but what pain are you talking about? If the truth is bad for the SNP, and it comes out and we are still in the UK, then it will be bad for all Indy supporters. If the truth is bad for the SNP and it comes out after independence, then it will be bad for the SNP. It CERTAINLY won't be bad for me, because I have no intention in being in the SNP after independence. It will be bad for a small cabal, while the rest of us enjoy the flowering of social democracy. 4. So the court case doesn't exonerate Salmond? Or are you picking and choosing rather than accepting justice.

Salmond himself said we should accept James Hamilton's findings. He appointed the guy and was instrumental in authoring the code.

And the committee has cleared Sturgeon because it too recommends that Hamilton make the judgement:

      https://sp-bpr-en-prod-cdnep.azureedge.net/published/SGHHC/2021/3/23/3dc69e08-899e-4d55-aa77-83f08cc4a815/SGHHC2021R1.pdf

      716. For all these reasons, the Committee believes that James Hamilton’s report is the most appropriate place to address the question of whether or not the First Minister has breached the Scottish Ministerial Code.

  17. So, as I expected, the SNP MSPs on the committee were correct in their assessment while the opposition were wrong or deliberately partisan. The source(s) of the leak should be investigated and forced to resign as an MSP in the new term should they have been elected.

The committee said it found a "fundamental contradiction" in Nicola Sturgeon's evidence on whether she agreed to intervene in a Scottish government investigation into complaints by two woman against Alex Salmond.

It said that, in a meeting at her Glasgow home on 2 April 2018, Ms Sturgeon "did in fact leave Mr Salmond with the impression that she would, if necessary, intervene".

The report continued: "Her written evidence is therefore an inaccurate account of what happened, and she has misled the committee on this matter."

The committee found this is a potential breach of the ministerial code, but added that James Hamilton's report was the "most appropriate place" to address the question of whether Ms Sturgeon had breached the ministerial code.

Mr Hamilton ruled yesterday that she had not intervened and had not breached the code.

The four SNP committee members said they did not agree with the finding that Ms Sturgeon misled the committee.

There was no contradiction and everything was above board.

I think the other members of the committee should apologise to Sturgeon for these false accusations. They were just plain wrong or partisan.

James Hamilton is a senior lawyer and former head of the Irish prosecution service. A 'man of integrity' who is completely impartial. He has decades of experience in spotting the truth vs lies and no axe to grind.

Read his report and you can see it for yourself.

A country the FM is questioned for 8 hours live on TV is a country I want to live in. A FM who is completely exonerated of any wrongdoing whatsoever by international observers she referred herself too is a suitable FM for that country.

A country run by trial by English right-wing lynch mob blog is a country I definitely don't want to live in.

Hamilton report a tremendous boost for Sturgeon and a disaster for her critics

Nicola Sturgeon and her adversaries agreed on very little about the Alex Salmond affair but both sides were united in their admiration for James Hamilton and their confidence in his report representing the final word on the first minister’s conduct.

So the former Irish director of public prosecutions’ clear and unambiguous conclusion that she did not breach the Scottish government’s ministerial code is a tremendous boost for Sturgeon and a disaster for her critics.

Andy Ellis suggested protest voting in another thread and the idea of compiling a list of preferred candidates so that we can all concentrate our disapproval in the same place.

I think that’s a great idea, assuming we rule nothing out and are willing to vote Labour, Tories, etc., and not just pro-indy parties"

Agent provocateur whose clear first goal is not independence.

  29. James, quite a bit of polling data from Hanbury on this twitter thread. The state of the nation (UK and Scotland in particular)

It’s clear the centre ground of Scottish politics, (values, institutions or policy), is very different to the wider UK and, in particular, to England. It suggests that to be successful the Unionist side has to meet the Scottish electorate on its own terms...(11/18)

    2. 46% of voters agree with the statement “Scotland should be an Independent Country” compared to 38% who disagree.

Fieldwork 12 Feb to 1 st March.

Will need to add that to the PoP average.

  30. The SNP's pattern of behaviour is not "inexplicable". They're selectively using the legal system to harass and persecute political dissent. It's simply a function of leftist politics, as it was in the USSR and its satillites and continues to be in modern China. This is what an independent Scotland under the SNP will look like. Unless a strong right wing party is established in Scotland BEFORE independence, the country is doomed to the same degeneration and hopelessness that so many -- I acknowledge, not all -- postcolonial countries are sinking in today. And people wilfully refusing to see what's right up against their faces is not helping. It CAN happen in Scotland.

    1. Huh? I thought the SNP were the 'tartan Tories'?

Further up, some posters are complaining that Scotland needs a proper left wing Yes party as the SNP are too right wing. Labour argue this all the time.

You unionists can't seem to be consistent here. You are all saying the opposite thing to one another.

    2. Not a unionist. Your mind is lazy.

From next week the ban on leaving the UK will become a specific law, backed up by the threat of a fine.

1.3 million / 2% of the entire population have already fled the sinking ship. I can't help but feel this is a crude attempt to stop the mass brexodus that's underway by shutting the borders E. Germany style.

Certainly, the tightening of border controls seems to be aimed at stopping people leaving as much as preventing 'Johnny foreigner' entering.

  31. "The demonisation of Alex Salmond by the SNP" wtf James?

That's the kind of pish that is being posted on the hate fest that is WoS. You are better than that.

Colluded with and conspired against. Which one is it? Can't be both.

Time for you to get back to reality.
