At the start of the year, Stuart Campbell had a meltdown because I said I was bemused by his apparent belief that he was going to bring down the wildly popular First Minister. I can't deny there have been one or two moments since then when I wondered if he might just be proved right - but what I could never understand was his certainty that Ms Sturgeon's resignation was inevitable. That always looked like wishful thinking on his part, and so it has proved. He's tacitly admitting that tonight by saying (and I paraphrase) "I only didn't see this coming because I didn't consider the possibility that Hamilton might turn out to be an idiot". I think the pretence has now gone - not only does he no longer want independence if he can't get rid of Nicola Sturgeon, he's now actively urging Scots to emigrate to other countries. Who knows where this remarkable political journey may end. Will the Wings site end up endorsing Labour and/or the Tories? Could a seat in the House of Lords as Lord Campbell of Bath be on the cards? I'm being semi-facetious, but he's already travelled a long, long way, and sadly some of his readers have been taken along for the ride.

We dodged a bullet today
It's fair to say I'm a touch ambivalent about today's developments. The demonisation of Alex Salmond has been part of an inexplicably reckless pattern of behaviour from the SNP leadership in recent weeks and months, and the big downside of Hamilton's adjuducation is that it will lead them to feel vindicated and to double down on their factional actions and rhetoric. That is not in the interests of unity within the movement. However the alternative, if Hamilton had ruled the other way, simply doesn't bear thinking about. Earlier today I reported on a poll that suggested Yes might be moving back into the lead after the dip of recent weeks - well, that would have been straight back out of the window if Nicola Sturgeon had been ruled to have breached the ministerial code. At least now we have a credible chance of winning a pro-independence majority in May, and perhaps even an overall SNP majority.
Today's findings confirm that the only way to achieve an independent Scotland is to vote against it in any future referendum! Nothing could be more disastrous for the aspirations of independence now, than voting for independence! We must ensure that there is simply no chance of a referendum ever even coming to pass! Only then will independence be within Scotland's reach!
ReplyDeleteFor this invaluable and productive insight, please send your life's savings to me until independence is secured! (As ever, no refunds!)
Beware of false profits.
DeleteHis supporters are fuming. They will get over it, eventually.
I've been through this so many times before. We still live in a Scotland where the media is almost entirely controlled by the English establishment. I've lost count of the times a story was going to 'finish independence'.
ReplyDeleteThe constant bombardment can make you start to doubt even what is the obvious truth if you just step away and let yourself read it. But that's the intent. It doesn't help that a site which used to pretend to be pro-indy and give 'the truth' is now just parroting the UK MSM.
The other night I said my confidence Sturgeon would be cleared had risen from 90% to 95% due to the leaks, Wings etc saying the opposite. But even that had some bravado as you can't help but think that the constant attacks will win out.
I have said many times I preferred Salmond's style and I'm saddened about what seems to be looking a bit of an inglorious end. But politicians are just human and we shouldn't put them on pedestals. There's time for the big man yet if he accepts this judgement and lets things lie. There's a referendum coming and he can still help rally a good % as a figurehead.
The advice I give myself is ignore those you don't trust. Listen to people who are nice, reasonable and thoughtful. I've found this generally works.
As for polls, I predict that all those that have sought to tell voters that Sturgeon was an evil lying witch will now feel the wrath of those they lied to. Wings Included.
Unionism staked everything on today. They would be better showing humility. I doubt they will though.
Yet another gentle reminder, folks, that comments lecturing me on what I can and can't blog about will be automatically deleted. Why waste your own time?
ReplyDeleteThe SNP has lost thousands of supporters and the stain will remain.
ReplyDeleteNicola Sturgeon's only hope re-uniting everyone will be if she unequivocally, and at full tilt, goes after Independence.
But I think pigs will fly before that happens.
I understand 12,500 new members had joined in the last 3 weeks.
Deletehttps://www.thenational.scot/news/19175639.snp-welcome-membership-boost-12-500-people-sign-party-march/
And do you have the total membership numbers, so that we can have some context? An official source would be useful too.
DeleteErm, I have actually provided a link to some evidence, at least of the current trend.
DeleteMaybe you can too, at least for your original claim?
There may be 12,500 new members. (I read The National too. so I was aware the claim).
DeleteBut there may be the same number of resignations or more or less.
So, again, have you got the total membership numbers so that we can look at the net effect?
But duncanino, you unequivocally stated in you original post that "The SNP has lost thousands of supporters", so why pursue Scottish Skier for membership numbers when you must have access to them to be able to have made that claim?
DeleteRavelin:
DeleteMine is hearsay, purely anecdotal. I admit that.
I admit that is all I have got to go on because the SNP do not publish these numbers on their website.
Until they provide these, the 12,500 claim will simply be viewed as a highly selective use of numbers. In other words, propaganda.
However, I will take it all back and confess my mistake if the total numbers are revealed.
Perhaps you can enlighten me?
The 2019 accounts showed that the £2 levy on each member had raised exactly £175,000.
DeleteSo the official membership that year was 87,500. A drop of 40,000 from the peak of only 3 years before.
Now prove that there were 12,500 new members and tell us the total.
I was a bit confused by Stuart's rant. Unless I missed something, his main grievance was that Hamilton was inferring that no misleading happened - ie. that the FM didn't mislead parliament.
ReplyDeleteHowever, looking at the statements Stu published from the report, Hamilton says no such thing. All Hamilton said, was that the FM had "not breached the Ministerial Code" - which as we all know, is a different thing (breaching the ministerial code requires a minister to "knowingly" mislead parliament)
So Stuart's statement ...
"For James Hamilton, armed with far more evidence, to conclude not merely that the misleading had been accidental but that it didn’t happen at all, is a lie so barefaced as to be breathtaking, and so farcical as to defy any possibility of honest belief."
... I just don't get. As I say, unless there is something I have missed :-/
Implying not inferring.
DeleteHamilton says that despite the mountain of evidence that Murrell breached the ministerial code, he has decided that she didn't because she says she didn't.
Given that he isn't a minister, it seems pretty safe to say that Murrell hasn't breached the ministerial code.
DeleteFrankly that rather crazed rant by Wings Over Scotland is not worth disentangling. Alex Salmond said recently in sworn testimony that James Hamilton "is a man of great integrity and experience. I appointed him." So having a fit about the Hamilton Report findings based on a complete knowledge of the evidence simply leaves Mr. Campbell looking like the bigot he is.
ReplyDeleteNow that's a logical fallacy par excellence.
DeleteWe all know the complete evidence. We saw murrell lie. We heard her lie. We read Salmond's submission where he listed every time she broke the code, and which clause was relevant in each case. We saw Hamilton and Aberdein corroborate Salmond's evidence.
Now take your sad american lies and go back to backing Biden as he crams children into cages and invades Syria.
What if... Alex Salmond becomes an AFI candidate this week?
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure we have dodged a bullet here. It prolongs the agony. Sturgeon has lost some trust in the party. She may have pulled in more members, possibly enough to outweigh those who no longer trust her. And being newbies they are likely to be more compliant, but in being compliant, they may actually be less able to turn the party around.
ReplyDeleteOverall, I feel that this embeds the divisions and makes moving on from them more difficult. I fear that Sturgeon's performance before the Holyrood Inquiry has set those divisions in deeper than they need be.
At Branch level there isn't the sour outlook you make it out to be. We don't like what has gone on from either side of this sorry saga. Many have of us have stayed out of mud slinging. We just wanted the infighting to stop and we get on and campaign for the upcoming election. I hope we start doing for what we joined the party for and that is to campaign for independence.
DeleteAny trust lost has just been renewed.
DeleteJames Hamilton is a completely independent international observer from Ireland. The former head of the Irish CPS. Couldn't possibly be more impartial.
Sturgeon is innocent of wrongdoing, just like Salmond is no criminal. End of.
I agree.
DeleteThe Unionists are going to play this hard right through the coming campaign. Their only objective (at least this time around) is to avoid the possibility of an outright SNP majority.
In that event will, of course, dismiss any calls for a referendum.
Remember Blair leading labour into the 2005 election and losing 3,965,731 from his 1997 peak. The same election where Michael Howard's conservatives took more votes in England.
DeleteNow apply that sort of decline to a PR system.
We've dodged a bullet but fallen over a cliff into a tank full of sharks in a minefield flooded with cyanide.
Unionists have gone over the cliffs.
DeleteThey have spent the last year telling Scots that there was a big conspiracy and Sturgeon was a liar who must resign.
Lady Dorain dismissed any conspiracy. The police and CPS did likewise. The committee too.
Hamilton has cleared Sturgeon of any wrongdoing whatsoever; her account was judged completely truthful.
I predict a voter backlash from this, and it won't be against Sturgeon and the SNP.
I'm glad that the report finds that Sturgeon hasn't broken the ministerial code. I'm also glad that Salmond was acquitted. Despite the accusations and counter accusations no one stands guilty of anything. I'm pretty sure that Unionists were hoping the opposite in both cases.
ReplyDeleteBoth the SNP and the Yes movement need to push on from here. I tend to agree with James and a bullet was dodged and an opportunity offered in its place. Let's take it.
I've been trying to get a close relative to commit to voting yes, ever since I found out that she'd voted no in 2014. (we're almost there, so I count her a a half in my miserable tally of successes).
ReplyDeleteI asked her today, what she thought about Stu Campbell and Wings reaction to the QC's verdict. Her reply was "Who?".
I think that many folk are completely unaware of the shenanigans that goes on in pro-Indy sites, with yes voters screaming at each other.
The bookies have probably got it right, with the odds of the SNP holding a majority after May sitting at 8/11.
I think 11/8 would be closer to the mark, personally.
DeleteEven 11/8 sounds pretty ungenerous for a single party to win a majority in a five-party PR system, and that's without taking the current turmoil into account. What are they offering on the SNP winning a plurality only? It sounds like that would probably be good value.
DeleteBookies don't drive minis....
ReplyDeleteMeaning they don't get it wrong? Simply not true. Particularly on politics - they feel obliged to offer prices, but quite often they're fumbling about in the dark and end up accidentally offering decent value. I have a winning track record on political betting, and I'm sure I'm not alone in that.
DeleteBookies are either rich or out of business. Hence the saying. It doesn't mean they always win.
DeleteI watched all six hours of Salmond and all eight hours of Sturgeon. I have no doubts whatever about which one was telling the truth.
ReplyDeleteEven if we could wheesht for Indy, is a country founded on lies, injustice and censorship worth fighting for? Even if the truth is suppressed for now, will it keep that way? If not, then all the pain is ahead of us. If yes, then who wants a country like that?
I am completely dispirited. I will not vote for dangerous liars, or their supporters the Greens.I will not vote for any unionist. I have no options. I likely will not vote at all.
I watched all six hours of Salmond and all eight hours of Sturgeon. As an avid supporter of Alex Salmond, I am still as confused as I was before their testimony. Which one was telling the truth? Both? Which one was telling the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth? Neither?
DeleteEven if there are flaws (big flaws) in the SNP government, yes, yes! YES! ..... an independent Scotland (with or without a SNP government IS worth fighting for! Are you SERIOUSLY suggesting that being under SNP rule would be worse than being under Tory rule? Even if the truth is suppressed for now, it WILL (probably) come out in the future, but what pain are you talking about? If the truth is bad for the SNP, and it comes out and we are still in the UK, then it will be bad for all Indy supporters. If the truth is bad for the SNP and it comes out after independence, then it will be bad for the SNP. It CERTAINLY won't be bad for me, because I have no intention in being in the SNP after independence. It will be bad for a small cabal, while the rest of us enjoy the flowering of social democracy. Who wants a country like that? ME!! I want a country like that!! I'm not alone.....
My enthusiasm for supporting the SNP has taken a dent. I will not vote for dangerous liars. That's why I won't vote Tory, or labour, or Lib Dem. according to you, we are presented with a choice of voting for liars who want independence, or liars who want to keep Scotland under the yoke of Westminster Tories.
If you are so disgusted with the SNP that you can't vote for them in the regional ballot, then fine...... vote Green. The question is, who are you going to vote for in the constituency? The unionist liars? Or the SNP?
That's your choice......
I truly hope Salmond's statement on Wednesday is aimed at restoring unity in the YES movement and not the opposite.
ReplyDeleteSalmond has a chance to restore some standing within the independence cause. Will he take it?
Or is it all about him.
I also think this ruling may mean the difference between The SNP getting 40-50% of the of the vote and 30-40% of the vote.
ReplyDeleteNobody has won from this saga, but at least there were no criminal wrongdoings.
It's only the impartial independent report of Hamilton that matters to the public.
DeleteOpposition accusations are never listened to, especially when these were leaked in breach of the MSPs code and found to be untrue by impartial International observers.
Sturgeon was totally cleared. Her / the SNPs popularity is going to shoot up I predict as a public backlash occurs.
I mean in regard to today's committee report, which just isn't news thanks to unionists and Hamilton.
DeleteThe leaks convinced me I that my assessment was almost definitely correct and sturgeon had done nothing wrong. Hamilton was going to conclude exactly that.
If Andy Wightman indeed supports the conclusion that she misled parliament, that somewhat undermines the claim that it's just Unionist stirring. Salmond will be pouring further fuel on the fire on Wednesday. I suspect the public are more cynical than you about these impartial independent investigations which have a tendency to find in favour of the government (and the Tories' deniable outriders will keep pushing the calumny that Hamilton is a former member of the SNP, something that's already being repeated by blue ticks).
DeleteI think this is far from the end of the matter.
Alex didn't do anything bad enough to be convicted. Nicola didn't do anything bad enough to be forced out so we HAVE avoided a heavy artillery shell !
ReplyDeleteWe still have a bureaucratised, faction led and dishonestly managed party. I'm still a member by the skin of my teeth. The brutal fact though is that we need that party if we are to move towards independence.
Why did The Declaration of Arbroath contain the famous warning shot to Robert 1st ? The answer is that they were not foolish enough to fall into uncritical leader worship, even after Bannockburn!
I'm going to keep my party card for now and try to fix some of the SNP's multiple failings where possible but only as a third priority after pushing for a majority and a real indy campaign. I doubt if my membership will last six months after indy however. A new democracy with new opportunities !!
The release of the report reminded me of the day the Hutton report was published. It was too good to be true for the government. Even Sturgeon looked surprised yesterday.
ReplyDeleteEven if the pundits are right and the SNP win in May, what about after that? Will the truth be suppressed forever?
Salmond’s response isn’t about himself alone. It’s about what kind of country we live in. I find it all depressing that it has come to this.
Yes, it is all about what kind of country we live in - and at least when we have Indy it will be up to OURSELVES to decide those things, not a neighbouring country.
DeleteTry to be positive, eyes on the prize, surely??
ps I never saw Nicola looking "Surprised" - she has been saying all along that she never broke the ministerial code.
DeleteShe knows that she's lying. We all know that she's lying. You know that she's lying.
DeleteThe Hamilton report in no way exonerates her. Not even slightly.
Now we have the committee report stating that she perjured herself. Will you accept their verdict?
So the court case doesn't exonerate Salmond? Or are you picking and choosing rather than accepting justice.
DeleteSalmond himself said we should accept James Hamilton's findings. He appointed the guy and was instrumental in authoring the code.
And the committee has cleared Sturgeon because it too recommends that Hamilton make the judgement:
https://sp-bpr-en-prod-cdnep.azureedge.net/published/SGHHC/2021/3/23/3dc69e08-899e-4d55-aa77-83f08cc4a815/SGHHC2021R1.pdf
716. For all these reasons, the Committee believes that James Hamilton’s report is the most appropriate place to address the question of whether or not the First Minister has breached the Scottish Ministerial Code.
So, as I expected, the SNP MSPs on the committee were correct in their assessment while the opposition were wrong or deliberately partisan. The source(s) of the leak should be investigated and forced to resign as an MSP in the new term should they have been elected.
ReplyDeleteThe committee said it found a "fundamental contradiction" in Nicola Sturgeon's evidence on whether she agreed to intervene in a Scottish government investigation into complaints by two woman against Alex Salmond.
It said that, in a meeting at her Glasgow home on 2 April 2018, Ms Sturgeon "did in fact leave Mr Salmond with the impression that she would, if necessary, intervene".
The report continued: "Her written evidence is therefore an inaccurate account of what happened, and she has misled the committee on this matter."
The committee found this is a potential breach of the ministerial code, but added that James Hamilton's report was the "most appropriate place" to address the question of whether Ms Sturgeon had breached the ministerial code.
Mr Hamilton ruled yesterday that she had not intervened and had not breached the code.
The four SNP committee members said they did not agree with the finding that Ms Sturgeon misled the committee.
There was no contradiction and everything was above board.
I think the other members of the committee should apologise to Sturgeon for these false accusations. They were just plain wrong or partisan.
James Hamilton is a senior lawyer and former head of the Irish prosecution service. A 'man of integrity' who is completely impartial. He has decades of experience in spotting the truth vs lies and no axe to grind.
Read his report and you can see it for yourself.
A country the FM is questioned for 8 hours live on TV is a country I want to live in. A FM who is completely exonerated of any wrongdoing whatsoever by international observers she referred herself too is a suitable FM for that country.
A country run by trial by English right-wing lynch mob blog is a country I definitely don't want to live in.
Lay off the drugs Alyn.
DeleteMurrell lied to the committee during her 2 hours or less of actual testimony. That's when she wasn't just claiming to have early onset dementia.
A country where the entire apparatus of state is set against an innocent man.
A country where the First Minister has to take out an injunction and bribe the media to prevent them reporting on her battering the shit out of her girlfriend.
A country where a senior MP receives rape and death threats and the FM says nothing.
A country where senior MPs abuse children and the FM covers for them.
A country where the education minister is forcing 9 year olds to watch hardcore pornography in sex education classes.
A country where the Justice minister is a racist who will put you in prison for 7 years if you deny that men can get pregnant.
A country where the first minister can lie and abuse their power and smear the public.
That is the country you support.
'That is the country you support'.
DeleteThis does kind of give you away. Why don't you add in 'banana republic' or 'North Korea' for good measure?
PeeJay/Stuart
DeleteYou are not taking the findings well, are you.
This should be a priority for the new parliamentary term. Those found responsible for leaks should step down as MSPs. We can ask Hamilton to judge them on the MSPs code. The source of the leak to Davis also needs investigated.
ReplyDeletehttps://www.thenational.scot/news/19179971.jackie-baillie-says-back-inquiry-holyrood-committee-leaks/
Jackie Baillie says she'd back inquiry into Holyrood committee leaks
Do we really want to live in a Scotland where corrupt MSPs get away with such behaviour? Where English Tories read out leaked evidence from our courts using English law to protect them from contempt of court charges?
Jackie Baillie refuses to "accept" the findings of the Hamilton report.
ReplyDeleteDespicable and unworthy to sit in our parliament.
She recommended Hamilton make the calls. Unless the report included a written rejection of 716 (below) from her? I can't see that in the report.
DeleteRamstam - Hamilton probably doesn't accept his REDACTED report.
DeleteThe committee of course has completely cleared Sturgeon because it recommends that Hamilton make the judgement, deferring to his decades of legal expertise in judging the truth from lies:
ReplyDeletehttps://sp-bpr-en-prod-cdnep.azureedge.net/published/SGHHC/2021/3/23/3dc69e08-899e-4d55-aa77-83f08cc4a815/SGHHC2021R1.pdf
716. For all these reasons, the Committee believes that James Hamilton’s report is the most appropriate place to address the question of whether or not the First Minister has breached the Scottish Ministerial Code
So Sturgeon is cleared completely.
The current Scottish FM, the previous Scottish FM, the Scottish government, and the Scottish judiciary all look really bad. The Scottish parliament looks like an irrelevance.
ReplyDeleteNow we are off to have an election that will be a plebiscite on the current Scottish FM's character.
The Yes/Leave/Whatever movement has become a personality cult. It may well have been a personality cult when Salmond was King, and could do no wrong. Now we have a regally-anointed Queen. It's creepy.
The whole thing desperately needs new, strong political parties, with policies. It's currently totalitarian.
Sturgeon has been cleared completely by both the committee and expert independent international observer Hamilton.
DeleteI suspect a backlash by voters against these who lied to them about her.
Here you go:

Hamilton report a tremendous boost for Sturgeon and a disaster for her critics
Nicola Sturgeon and her adversaries agreed on very little about the Alex Salmond affair but both sides were united in their admiration for James Hamilton and their confidence in his report representing the final word on the first minister’s conduct.
So the former Irish director of public prosecutions’ clear and unambiguous conclusion that she did not breach the Scottish government’s ministerial code is a tremendous boost for Sturgeon and a disaster for her critics.
A flavour of some of the people who now inhabit the world of Wings Over Scotland.

It’s clear the centre ground of Scottish politics, (values, institutions or policy), is very different to the wider UK and, in particular, to England. It suggests that to be successful the Unionist side has to meet the Scottish electorate on its own terms...(11/18)
46% of voters agree with the statement “Scotland should be an Independent Country” compared to 38% who disagree.
DeleteFieldwork 12 Feb to 1 st March.
Will need to add that to the PoP average.
The SNP's pattern of behaviour is not "inexplicable". They're selectively using the legal system to harass and persecute political dissent. It's simply a function of leftist politics, as it was in the USSR and its satillites and continues to be in modern China. This is what an independent Scotland under the SNP will look like. Unless a strong right wing party is established in Scotland BEFORE independence, the country is doomed to the same degeneration and hopelessness that so many -- I acknowledge, not all -- postcolonial countries are sinking in today. And people wilfully refusing to see what's right up against their faces is not helping. It CAN happen in Scotland.
ReplyDeleteHuh? I thought the SNP were the 'tartan Tories'?
DeleteFurther up, some posters are complaining that Scotland needs a proper left wing Yes party as the SNP are too right wing. Labour argue this all the time.
