The best hope is that "social distancing from the bottom up" builds up enough economic pressures that the govt start considering the South Korean strategy. It's clear any change won't come from the govt's medical advisers, who are hellbent on ignoring the WHO's recommendations.

In a live press conference, @WHO chief @DrTedros just had the following message for world leaders:
— Rachel Clarke (@doctor_oxford) March 13, 2020
“Not testing alone.
Not contact tracing alone.
Not quarantining alone.
Not social distancing alone.
You must do it all.”
How precisely does @BorisJohnson know better? https://t.co/jNXefhuUyB
"Do not just let this fire burn" says the head of the WHO to European countries. Unfortunately it seems the only people not listening to him are the UK government's scientific advisers, who think they know better and want a huge epidemic to produce "herd immunity".
— James Kelly (@JamesKelly) March 13, 2020
Will the complacent media people saying "we must listen to the science" please, for the love of God, listen to this man, the head of the WHO, who is telling the UK government and its advisers to change course urgently?https://t.co/0xYQ5aTI2s
— James Kelly (@JamesKelly) March 13, 2020
Two days ago, "taking it on the chin" was just a wacky theory. Now, it's being put into practice under the pretext of achieving "herd immunity."
— Joanne Harris (@Joannechocolat) March 13, 2020
Guys: herd immunity only works when the herd has been vaccinated. Otherwise, we call it "natural selection."
Powerful ,authoritative contribution from Dr Michael Ryan of WHO
— Bruce McD (@brucemcd23) March 13, 2020
Speaking from experience of fighting epidemics says work closely with your community, move early and move fast . Leave no room for regret because if you don’t move fast the virus will
Anyone listening in No 10? pic.twitter.com/gS1gyWnrPu
No vaccine and no data on immunity following recovery. In that context talk of herd immunity amounts to social darwinism
— Darius Humperdinkt (@DHumperdinkt) March 13, 2020
It seems ages ago, but Chris Whitty said to MPs a couple of weeks ago that, whatever his personal feelings on the futility of containment, he'd have to take heed of international feeling on whether to attempt it. So why are the UK govt studiously ignoring what the WHO are saying?
— James Kelly (@JamesKelly) March 13, 2020
If it's true that the UK's idiotic response to this catastrophe is being driven partly by "behavioural psychology", you'd think it would have occurred to someone that "wash your hands but we'll make sure you get the virus eventually anyway" isn't the most promising message?
— James Kelly (@JamesKelly) March 13, 2020
Absolutely. And history will record that when some (not enough) of the right things started happening, it was in spite of the government, not because of them. That'll make the UK (sadly including Scotland) almost unique in Europe.https://t.co/ubPQe8tkgs

ReplyDeleteSeparabamus.
Ooh. Look at me. I did french in school
DeleteAnon: I'm not going to let you spread misinformation. I've listened to the WHO briefings with care, and you're giving a false impression of what Ryan said.
ReplyDeleteI was out for takeaway tonight and on waiting seats, people were leaving seat between them and next person. Or waiting outside shop.
ReplyDeleteI think common sense will prevail in our population.
I'm not sure because that woman came and asked if there were Munchers in the flat. When that happens you know you're dealing with spoondrifters.
DeleteAnon, I've deleted your second comment as well, because - seriously - I'm not going to let you mislead people about what the WHO are saying. It's true that testing and contact tracing in the UK has not been as hopeless as in the US and some other countries, but it's not been up to the standard (or scale) that the WHO are saying is needed - ie. the Chinese or South Korean standard.
ReplyDeleteThere's an elephant in the room here which wouldn't go unmentioned if this wacky solo course of action was being taken by, say, Germany or France: England's centuries-long superiority complex combined with the little Englander islander mentality of the last four years.
ReplyDeleteThis also reeks of Dom Cummings pretensions an an authority on the sciences, and the English elite's sociopathic tendency for centuries to regard the UK and Empire populations as their playthings, funny little lab specimens to try out your bloody amazing latest hypotheses on, Brexit and No Deal being other examples.
Well, let's see if the UK and Scottish populations are happy with that role. Maybe they are. The likes of GWC would probably like nothing more than being probed and dissected by Dom and Boris, maybe even injected with the virus, and we have many thousands just as servile as he is.
There's so much happening globally so fast but we shouldn't lose sight of the fact that, as well as everything else, the virus is about to reveal precisely how wretched and deservedly shat-upon a country we are, or otherwise.
But surely England is right and the furriners are wrong?
ReplyDeleteScotland should follow a 27+ nations plan with all our European neighbours. This is not something we can fight alone.
DeleteI am thinking about digging up ma maws grave tae see if she is OK.
Delete""It's clear any change won't come from the govt's medical advisers, who are hellbent on ignoring the WHO's recommendations.""
ReplyDeleteWell they would not want to endanger their knighthoods would they?
More intentional mass genocide of the poor, weak and vulnerable..
ReplyDeleteIt's the only logical explanation.
GWC .. you're one F@@@@D up parasitic C@@T!
It is OK ma maw went tae the crematorium.
DeleteVallance is already knighted. 2019 − Knighted in 2019 New Year Honours
ReplyDeletePeerage then
DeleteDidn't Boris also say that they'd considered adopting a Let It Burn approach but had decided against it?
ReplyDeleteSo the way the UK govt is dealing with the worst global plague in a century is to hope most of the population catches it, mention this in TV interviews but deny it's really true, even though it is, and then on top of this force the population through the humanitarian disaster of a No Deal Brexit?
Are we all fucking hallucinating here? What's going on?
In purely political terms this will bring about the end of the Tories and the Union and Jackson Carlaw knows it that's why he supported the FM for trying to do more in Scotland in the face of his own party not showing nearly enough concern in England because the main concern there for the Tories is the stock market not people
ReplyDeleteEverybody knows this virus can't be stopped but it can be tapered more slowly and gently, but the longer it takes the more the economy suffers and that's Johnson and his cohort's main concern
Money
The results of this are going to be serious but Johnson's approach might as well be bring out your sick and we'll put them in camps till they die, or better still die in the house and don't make a fuss about it
Scotland will judge Johnson and find him guilty then it's over
Bring out the dead bring out the dead. I am not dead, you are now, thump over the heid!
Delete>The President of the Generalitat, Quim Torra, announced this Friday the confinement of the whole of Catalonia, where 7.6 million people live, and has asked the central government for help in carrying it out. "We have to confine the country and we need the collaboration of the Spanish Government (...) The State must accompany us and stop the entrances to ports, airports and railway systems under its jurisdiction, and we have transmitted this to them. We await your response to make the confinement effective,” said Torra in an institutional statement.

You can't compare corona to normal flu, ya numpty! .. we don't know how many people cv will kill .. it's obviously far more contageous and deadly..
ReplyDeleteGWC.. get yourself to the Westminster lavvies to lick some some Tory arses clean .. do something positive with your pathetic life and save some trees..
Anon: The answer to your question is no, I will not allow you to mislead people about what the WHO are saying, even at the third attempt.
ReplyDeleteYou know, and I know, that you're quoting Ryan out of context and that he meant something very different from the impression you're trying to convey. But others may not know what you're up to, and I'm not going to let you play that little game.
No vaccine and no data on immunity following recovery. In that context talk of herd immunity amounts to social darwinism.best game
ReplyDeleteEveryone should go out and buy masks and wear them - that is our right and will wake people up- don't believe the BS about them being useless- they are just wanting us to catch it - and do not want anyone to SEE anyone with a mask- PR is in play here NOT science
