Al Jazeera film on Brexit Day
Yesterday morning I made my way to a swanky coffee shop in the west end of Glasgow to be filmed speaking about Brexit Day for an Al Jazeera social media feature, along with Remain-supporting Australian Tahnee Conn, Leave-supporting Tom Walker, and the no-introductions-required Gerry Hassan. You can watch it via the tweet below.

What's Brexit got to do with Scotland or Ireland, this is what England wants and we earn the money and pay the bills, not Scotland
ReplyDeleteJust the comments of one Brexiter I heard
They don't care understand or even know how racist they are
Well, Scotland got a brief mention.
ReplyDeleteThere are people now living in Scotland hopefully temporarily who have caught the Scottish Nationalist Virus. It consists in the first instance of moaning from the minute they wake in the morning and goes onto wanting benefits they could not get in their former host country. The Scottish Nationalists encourage this with their chief moaner who is constantly moaning and on a mission to moan. That person is called the First Minister of Scotland. She will die some day muffled up in a coffin tae keep her vicious mouth shut.
ReplyDeleteErm, it's the English who are chickenshit coward subsidy junkies too scared to let got of Scotland's coat tails. Hence no Section 30.
DeleteThey spend all their time greeting about Scottish independence. Too pathetically weak a people to stand on their own two feet.
Massive ads campaign coming as they soil themselves over the prospect of having to actually earn a living rather than live off the backs of hard working Scots.
You are vile. I'm not sure whether you're just xenophobic or are racist too. As for a vicious mouth, you really need to look in the mirror
DeleteAre you threatening the FM? you know that's illegal don't you
DeleteJust one more arsehole who bases his politics on his religion and a football club and puts it before the country he lives in, that's what the Westminster government did to Northern Ireland in order to keep them, now that they're no use to them they're dumped
Don't you knuckle dragging morons get it yet the SNP is more your friend than you know, your enemy is a government in England keeping you over £130 per week poorer than every other country in the EU, why on earth do you think they conned you into Brexit before they were forced to pay a living wage to workers in the UK or to pay the European average pension to old people which is almost £100 per week more than they have now
Even Greece pays its pensioners more than the UK, stop believing the shit they're throwing at you
Lord govan, how did that aberdeen result go for you.
ReplyDeleteI see the prospect of 'no deal' is all over the headlines again now.
ReplyDelete'Having brexit done and moving on' didn't even last a week.
After the unruly and disrespectful way farage and his merry band of convict lookalikes were waving their little butchers aprons acted before they left the EU parliament .. there's no way the Brits will get a deal ..
ReplyDeleteBring on the chaos .. 51% and rising!
Some lessons from some recent interactions with some sadly stereotypical British nationalists: (no offence to majority of reasonable Unionists!)
ReplyDelete1. They consider 'nationalist' a really bad word - that they mean as a slur when talking of independence supporters - yet are blind to their own British nationalism.
2. They have a genuinely unhealthy obsession with the SNP and Nicola Sturgeon - actually putting "hate the SNP" and suchlike on their profiles - defining themselves by the hatred of others. They don't seem to realise there is a whole movement, half the country, and even if they got rid of Sturgeon or Salmond, there is a ready supply of successors.
3. They love to quote statistics especially those about Scotland as it is within the Union but are completely unquestioning of where those statistics come from or what they mean, or how they might apply differently to an independent Scotland. Statistics aside, they can never grasp that there are successful countries roughly our size - Ireland, Denmark, Finland, etc - actually evidently successful in front of our own eyes.
4. They lurch from trying to taunt Scotland that we couldn't join the EU, or at the other extreme, say that being in the EU is not proper independence. Neither is an argument against independence! And they are utterly blind to the undemocratic make-up of the UK, the lack of Scotland's voice in our so-called Union, the House of Lords, etc.
5. Their constitutional mindset is stuck in 2014, repeating over and over again Better Together slogans like a comfort blanket, but utterly oblivious to all the things that have changed since then, all the promises broken and changed circumstances. If "one in a generation" is the best they've got, they're doomed.
6. They are utterly in denial about what is happening to the dismantling of the Union as we know it. They ought to be horrified that Boris Johnson is putting a border in the Irish Sea, the warning bells that DUP oppose it and Sinn Fein are relaxed about it as long as it keeps the north of Ireland integrated with the Republic. Don't they see that if N Ireland is detachable, the whole charade of the Union is undermined. Yet, since before the election, I have never heard a British respond on this point. They always go silent. They must know it's the beginning of the end.
Well, that's my recent experience; I suppose I am just getting this off my chest because there are lots of interesting debates to be had with reasonable Unionists, neutrals and indy-curious, but when you come across people with the above attitudes, it's just not worth the breath.
The zinger for me is the ones who insist we could never join the EU and, in the same breath, that we'll be forced to use the Euro.
DeleteAye, a classic warped belief system. There are no logical thought processes involved here. Britania still rules the waves, you see. But getting them to take those red, whte and blue blinkers off won't be possible for many - they are kind of welded onto their faces. No matter how bad it gets, Britania still rules the waves and Britons will never never never be slaves. Just as well most of them are over 65 years old and gradually disappearing.
ReplyDeleteI have spoken to quite a few hard unionists/ brexiteers, with broad Scottish accents who still think it will all be ok. They are quite content to be second-class englishmen and women. Britain is so great for them it's worth the pain, the ridicule, the humiliation at the hands of their imperial masters. Such loyalty.
I have even heard some scots say they will head down south if Scotlabd ever becomes independent. Incredible as it may seem - these people do exist. If you meet any, please ask them how they will enjoy a screwed NHS, no free bus pass, no free prescriptions, people laughing at their accents when they abandon us? Believe it or not, some among us are just so "British" that they would be willing to put up with it. No me.
Johnson destroyed the subsidy myth in a single stroke with his no Section 30. Or at least he confirmed England as the recipient of it for all to see.
ReplyDeleteNever in the history of human civilisation has one country tried to subjugate another for no material gain whatsoever / so it could spend its own hard earned cash bestowing luxuries on the conquered at the expense of its own people.
No section 30 = England confirmed as the 'subsidy junkie' too feart to stand on its own two feet without the Scots propping it up.
Cameron was much cleverer than Johnson. He knew that agreeing to a referendum so readily would make Scots lean to believing the subsidy myth.
DeleteI mean, if England wasn't really that bothered about Scotland going independent, then maybe Scots were costing the English money?
Of course London bricked it at the end with the vow shit etc, but the Section 30 ahead of 2014 caused Yes to crash in polls to barely 30%, from a comfortable mid 40's at the time of the 2011 election. Took yes 2 years to win those votes back. A genius move by Cameron.
Aye Cameron did make a good move, although as you said they kind of panicked when it got too close for comfort during the last two weeks prior to the vote. When the Edinburgh Agreement was signed, there was still a comfortable majority against independence, so there was scope to appear fair and reasonable. At polls now around 50:50, Johnson has no such luxury. There is no way that the British Esablishment will provide an S30 again - even if polls were at 60% NO. They just got too much of a fright last time. Nicola knows this, however, so hopefully the SG have something prepared. My ranting is over (sorry Nicola). In the cold light of day I'm still willing to wait this out and trust our leaders. I just wish the SNP would stir things up a little and remind us they are really up for this fight.
DeleteSeems you Nat sis are still in shock over the EU referendum result not to mention the 2014 result. Why the fook do you participate in them! Could it be you are all masochists with lemons in your mouths and black plastic bags over your heads like your Tory pals.
DeleteNo, we are brave. England, by contrast, is a cowardly, weak, subsidy junkie country; something Johnson has made clear.
DeleteScotland said 'Can England stand on its own two feet?' and England said 'No!'.
You are a pale unsmiling lot of dour wannabee Scots. Your incessant moaning is something to behold. You would get more fun in a piss up with the JW.ORG mob. We have a dour moanin FM who has abandoned at least half the Scottish population after saying she would represent all the Scottish people when she replaced the fud Eck.
DeleteSays someone who wants to be part of the most cowardly country in Europe.
DeleteAll the foreign folks I know are saying they cannot believe how chickenshit England is. They are saying 'What happened to the English that stormed the beaches at Normandy? How are they such cowards now, terrified of not being able to live off the backs of Scottish taxpayers?'.
A country of 56 million that wets its pants at the prospect of going it alone without its tiny wee neighbour of 5 million is a pathetic joke of a nation.
DeleteIt's humiliating for all decent, honest, brave English folks. The ones that fought the nazis are the those that would offer Scotland a section 30 and the hand of friendship in a second. But the feeble cowards - the nazi collaborators - are now in change. How far a once great nation has fallen.
Glad my gran came from a country with some balls.
It must be so humiliating for many good, proud, brave, democratic English folks to have so many of their country-folk turn into weak, pathetic, feeble subsidy junkies peeing in their pants at the prospect of having to stand on their own two feet.
ReplyDeleteEngland pathetically desperate to have wee Scotland keep propping it up is the greatest humiliation in English national history. I used to respect England as a country, but I cannot do so now. Such cowardice is not worthy of respect.
No section 30 = confirmation that England 'can't survive alone'.
ReplyDeleteThere's no hiding this.
They survived the Luftwaffe and have nuclear weapons in Scotland. And Scottish soldiers will fight for them. You are at a dead end Skier.
DeleteThe English Nats are still in a state of shock that those uppity jocks voted to stay in the EU.
ReplyDeleteAnd as for those BritNat scots - a "pale unsmiling lot of dour wannabee" Brits. Pathetic. Rule Britania Ha Ha Ha! How humiliating that even your English superiors don't really want you. They love your land. They love your resources. They love having a safe place (far away) to keep their nukes. They love putting you down. But as for the BritNat jocks - well, there is no kind easy way of puting this - they would rather they didn't exist. Sorry, but that's the reality that is about to smack those useful idiots in the face.
So border checks are back on and Herr Cummings and Fuhrer Johnson act like it was always going to be like that, anytime soon Herr Johnson will proclaim he told everybody checks would be normal
ReplyDeleteVery soon we'll be hearing about arming all the London police to keep *the country* safe
That won't work because *Bang* and like every country who fights back against the UK of the Empire of England we'll all be terrorists again......except them of course
Your the type that if someone looks at you sideways you shit yer troosers. Away an suck the Cardinals boaby.
DeleteYour tory pals know all about sookin boabies, yah vile piece of uneducated knuckle dragging vermin
Delete
