I truly struggle to comprehend Scottish Labour, who seem to be in an unprecedented state of open revolt against their own London leadership (good) for an incredibly stupid and destructive reason (bad). One thing that everyone seems to privately agree upon is that an independence referendum is now virtually inevitable, and that the only question mark is over the timing. If it's coming anyway, what possible benefit is there to Scottish Labour or the future No campaign in being seen to have implicitly threatened using English MPs at Westminster to try to prevent a democratic vote taking place? It would be an albatross around their necks, and Jeremy Corbyn is actually doing his level best to rescue them from their own stupidity.
I wouldn't necessarily disagree with the assessment that Corbyn is "weak", but the test of that in this case will be whether he now backs down from his sensible and strategically sound comments today in the face of boneheaded Scottish Labour intransigence.
Corbyn is undoubtedly a decent bloke who wants to help the poor. Unfortunately the majority of the British and Scots do not share his vision.

DeleteI see the Sunday Post have done another Survation Independence poll of over 60's. How many over 60's are on the internet? The more affluent ones I would think. The majority of pensioners I know are not on the internet. This group is more influenced by newspapers and television than the younger age groups. In the age of Freeview, I am amazed how many pensioners stick to the 5 main channels and seldom venture the other channels available.
ReplyDeleteCampaigning on the doorstep may help, but I suspect efforts are better spent convincing more women to support independence, since that is still a weakness.
DeleteThe problem Scottish Labour and others have with Corbyn is that he doesn't "play" politics. He simply states the obvious and doesn't make shit up or spin crap to wind up the other parties. This is truly a refreshing change. If more politicians behaved like him, we could have a sensible discussion. Instead, we just get politicians "playing" at politics. It's as if most politicians believe that the whole idea of politics is to avoid telling the truth at all times and to hurl lies at their oppositions. And look when one leader doesn't play that game and tells the truth? The political world caves in and goes on a demented rage. Corbyn's brilliant for highlighting just how much bull most politicians speak and what's become apparent is this: politicians can't handle one of their own speaking the truth!
