    1. Wouldn’t give Sky my money. N S let Scotland down badly, enriched herself through her public office, then literally ran away. You may find that type of behaviour acceptable but I do not. Until she apologises and comes clean I have no interest in anything she says.

    2. Nicola Sturgeon did not let Scotland down or run from her record. She showed courage on net zero by setting 2045 five years ahead of England and on LGBTQIA+ rights. Her anti-hate speech laws protected minorities from far right hatred. That public service stands. She need not answer for her husband.

    5. Not worship. Just a record: net zero five years ahead of England, LGBTQIA+ protections, and anti-hate speech law. Funny how that record draws the same voices on climate denial, homophobia, transphobia and misogyny.

A politician setting a target is not an achievement.

Similarly what are these protections you boldly claim? Details.

    7. Right. Legislating net zero for 2045, five years before England, was just a doodle. And the 2021 hate crime law covering sexual orientation, transgender identity and variations in sex characteristics is a secret. The details are public.

  3. Great to see The Greens passing a conference motion that 'Zionism is Racism'.

Absolutely correct, but far, far too narrow.

Zionism is Racism, Fascism, Apartheid, Genocidal, Expansionist-Colonialist, Deranged, War-Mongering Shite.

    2. Get real.

Just how 'extreme' do you want Israeli Zionism to become, before it is fully called-out?

Do you want to wait until every living thing in Gaza is slaughtered?

Very eminent Jewish scholars and even an ex an Israeli PM are now calling it what it is.

You cannot be discredited fror telling the honest truth about the repugnant scourge of Zionism, any more than you previously could for decrying Nazism.

    3. Calling out Israel as a fascistic, genocidal state is the right move by the Green Party but this Zionism is racism message is pure student politics, the sort of far left, shouty behaviour that puts voters off switching from mainstream parties.

    4. According to the Grauniad

an amendment put forward saying the motion should not be used to “pressure, proscribe or discipline members based on affiliation with Jewish community institutions” was voted down.

Perhaps there's some context missing here, but implicitly voting that members *should* be disciplined for "affiliation with Jewish community institutions" sounds a tad ominous

    6. Holocaust survivor backs Green Party 'Zionism is racism' motion.

'Stephen Kapos, who was born in Hungary before the outbreak of the Second World War, gave a speech backing the motion after it passed at the Green conference in Brighton on Sunday.

Speaking about the “horror” of seeing the genocide in Gaza play out, the Jewish retired architect said: “I felt a strong resonance with our own suffering and it is now visited upon and still visited upon the Palestinian people.

“It is the Zionist ideology and tactics that led to this, inevitably and therefore I feel that Zionism is linked up with an ultimate conclusion which is a genocide and therefore Zionism self-destructed, in my opinion. And from now on, I don’t think that we can accept and tolerate Zionism.”'

    11. Excellent 2023 article from journalist based in Israel and Palestine, showing among other things, that even in Israel itself and sometimes directly from the mouths of Israeli Ministers and ex Leaders, the Israeli Zionist State is FASCIST.

Also shows the moral cowardice of those on the British 'Left' in running away from that fact -

'Israelis are calling their leaders fascists. Why can’t British politicians?

      February 7, 2023

This article originally appeared in “The Landline,” +972’s weekly newsletter. .

“Since the election of the fascist Israeli government last December, there has been an increase in human rights violations against Palestinians, including children. Can the prime minister tell us how he is challenging what Amnesty and other human rights organizations refer to as an apartheid state?”

This should have been a legitimate question for a politician to ask the British prime minister in the House of Commons. But no sooner had Labour’s Kim Johnson asked it of Rishi Sunak last Wednesday afternoon, during an edition of Prime Minister’s Questions, than she was summoned to the office of her party’s chief whip and ordered to apologize.
Within a few hours, Johnson was back in the Commons retracting her earlier remarks. “While I was quoting accurately Amnesty’s description, I recognize this as insensitive and I’d like to withdraw it.”
But in the name of protecting Jewish sensibilities, Starmer is abdicating his responsibility to see the reality on the ground in Israel-Palestine for what it is, and to mount a much needed challenge to the Israeli government from outside.

In little over a month since being sworn in, Israel’s new coalition has set about consolidating the power of the executive and legislature at the expense of the judicial branch. Its radical changes are targeting a judicial system that rarely offered much of a challenge to decades of apartheid and occupation, but did at least maintain its relative independence vis-a-vis the government. The proposed “reform” — which has generated major opposition from Israel’s attorney general, the president, and the Supreme Court’s chief justice, among many others — would strip all meaningful oversight away from the judiciary, eliminating vital checks on the government’s whims.

In addition, the coalition is reportedly preparing to bring forward legislation that would disqualify almost all Palestinian/Arab Knesset members from serving in the Israeli parliament, and ban their parties from standing in elections. This would effectively enable the right wing to dominate in perpetuity, and deprive 20 percent of the state’s citizens — not to mention its millions of non-citizen subjects in the occupied territories — from having any say in their governance. All these moves — from strengthening authoritarian control to disenfranchising undesired racial groups — are taken straight out of the fascist playbook.

Tens of thousands of Israelis have been demonstrating against the proposed judicial reform every weekend for the past month, in a generally conservative protest movement that talks about “democracy” and “equality” yet seeks little more than a return to the status quo ante. But even the Israeli leaders of this movement have been leveling the kinds of criticism that would earn them rebuke in the current U.K. Labour Party. For example, Moshe Ya’alon, the former IDF chief of staff who allied with Yair Lapid and Benny Gantz in their recent election bids to defeat Benjamin Netanyahu, had no qualms calling the new coalition “FASCIST” on Twitter.

Such language is not unusual in Israeli politics; in fact, two former prime ministers, Ehud Barak and Ehud Olmert, have used the “F word in recent years, long before the current government came to power. But it is not only opponents who are branding it FASCIST: Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich referred to himself as a “FASCIST homophobe” in a recording published last month.

  4. Rory is presented as the smiling, reasonable face of 'gentle unionism'.

He is nothing of the sort.

He is an insidious wee weasel of a man, whose job it is to persuade gullible folk that the UK is actually a harmonious, inclusive, fair and benevolent arrangement between four nations, where all four have an equal standing and an equal say - when in fact it is the polar opposite of that, with England ruling the roost and simply instructing the others how to behave and completely ignoring them if they challenge that dictat.

That's the equivalent of 17 UK citizen's carbon footprint for an entire year. Just one bombing mission.
200 people's annual carbon footprint just for the bombers based at Fairford to return to their home based yesterday.

  14. The BBC gives a former spook prominent airtime to promote his hairbrain, amateur thesis about a “middleland”. It doesn’t give the opportunity for a series to present counter arguments. It doesn’t from my memory even put on a panel discussion to interrogate the merits of Stewart’s easily disprovable propaganda musings.
Fast forward to 2021 when Dr Ronan Toolis published his analysis of architectural features in Iron Age Britain. There is a clear dividing line along the Tweed / Solway border. The most striking feature (among many) is the absence of crannogs in England. Even in Rory Stewart’s beloved Cumbrian there are no crannogs in the geographically local and topographically suitable Lake District.
The concept of building homes with the protection of water was known in England. See Must Farm, stilt houses in Peterborough. But crannogs are absent.

  15. I see the Tories have now said they would completely over-rule any Scottish Govt which stands in the way of Nuclear Power Station expansion.

Nice to see unionists showing themselves up as what they really are - quasi-dictators 'telling' Scotland what they 'must' do.

Latest Survation poll in early 2026, paints a very different picture of what Scots actually want, though -

'In what will make "grim reading" for Scottish Labour Tories and the LibDems as the election draws near, the study carried out by Survation showed just 14% thought Scotland should rely on uranium used in nuclear reactors for its long-term energy security needs.

Just 20% said it was the energy source Scotland should focus on to "make the most effective contribution to tackling climate change", while almost 60% supported renewables like wind and solar.

Only 12% said they trusted the nuclear industry "to tell the truth about their products" including costs, the pollutants they might produce and their safety record, which put it behind the oil and gas industry.'

  18. Not sure which defination of zionism the E&W Greens have chosen. It's not a term that is used by many Jews, and it is a hazy subject that gets lots of brainless misappropreation. But I would imagine the definition they chose means that the E&W Greens are racist, and that by the same thinking the E&W Greens classify Scottish nationalists as racist, but not Jewish enough for them to be bothered about.

I doubt this action will go down well with Jews in the Holburn constituency, and Mr Zac will probably be the subject of as much of their derision as Netanyahoo.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Spanish Housing Shortage -
      The Main Cause: Supply Shortages
      • Construction Collapse: Building rates dropped sharply after the 2008 financial crash. While Spain built over 600,000 homes in 2007, completions dropped to under 100,000 homes by 2024.
      • Housing Deficit: The Spanish government estimates a current deficit of 600,000 to 1 million homes nationwide.
      • Low Public Stock: Social housing makes up only about 1.5% to 3.4% of total housing in Spain, which is among the lowest rates in Europe.
      Other Major Contributors
      • Tourism and Short-Term Rentals: Record numbers of tourists and platforms like Airbnb reduce the availability of long-term rental apartments for local residents.
      • Foreign Investment: Wealthy foreign buyers and large corporate investment funds buying properties for profit drive up purchase prices and rents.
