No, that's not the "big question", that's a monumental red herring designed to distract and confuse. We need to concentrate on the things we can actually control, not the things we can't. We have no power whatsoever to force the UK government to grant independence or an independence referendum. But we absolutely do have the power to seek an outright mandate for independence without Westminster's permission. If we are successful in gaining that mandate, we attain moral and political leverage we did not previously have - because for the first time the No mandate from 2014 will have been directly overturned.
Righty. Years ago when I was still allowed to post on WGD I used occasionally to post this URL:
https://www.snp.org/
and more often than not say that the word "Independence" or similar wasn't even mentioned on the SNP website main page, including in the 8 articles themselves which got updated irregularly. To be savaged [1] by the small motley crew of miniature whippet snappers who'd point out that Independence WAS mentioned in the menu. On my Lifebook with Firefox, largish font and bookmark sidebar all I got was 3 horizontal lines on the right which if for some reason you clicked on them, you got the pull-down menu with - yes - Independence on it. An almost invisible item near the bottom.
Fast forward to now, and all 8 articles are about Independence or a referendum, and the word Independence is 3 times on the main page, referendum once. They are getting the message - the SNP is about Independence not toe fluff.
[1] To be fair, being savaged by them was like being licked between the toes
I think it’s fair to say the period 2020/21 where Yes had a sustained lead with all polling companies can be ignored. If we cast our minds back, this was during Covid, when Sturgeon was doing her grandstanding during her daily briefings. Obviously a lot of people fell for this at the time.
Best of luck, James, we're all behind you.
ReplyDeleteGo for it James.
ReplyDeleteGod knows we need some rational and eager voices within our upper echelons to kick a few complacent erses now and again.
All well and good, but the big question has to be,
ReplyDeleteWould Westminster accept a de facto referendum?

DeleteIt is good to see you stand.
ReplyDeleteGood luck SGP - no better man for it.
