You're probably right. Labour being 14 points behind is pretty standard for them these days. They seem to have given up any hope of being in government. They aim to be a pressure group these days, like the Lib Dems.
All positive. I hope, and I'm confident we will hear a much more proactive tone towards independence at this conference. Let's be very careful here though. We've been led up the garden path too often to just accept sound bites and vague promises. I'll be looking out for detail, dates, firm commitments, accountability. We need James and others like him on as many committees as possible to hold the leadership's feet to the fire.
9.10 I hope so but with respect, I'll judge whether I'm disappointed or not. Grassroots indy has been treated pretty badly by the SNP leadership for years, almost like an inconvenience at times. That puts suspicion in your mind. My approval will be very hard earned.
Until fairly recently, Survation were indeed one of the more No friendly pollsters. It’s also a fact that until fairly recently, Ipsos (the Gold Standard) were one of the more Yes friendly pollsters!
9:12, of course it’s not Gold Standard anymore! After all, it’s most recent polls have shown a No lead! James Kelly dosen’t even cover Ipsos polls anymore!
Ipsos do not poll by telephone any longer, electric or otherwise, although I am forced to yet again point out that it is unclear what on earth our regular commentator means by the term "electric telephone". Which phones are non-electric?
Yes seem to be polling consistently around 52%. This is encouraging. However, let’s face it, it ain’t going to cut it with Westminster. We need to drive support up to and beyond 60%, so it’s very clear cut. Yes polling consistently 60% or more would put tremendous pressure on Andy Burnham and I feel he’d buckle. If Westminster didn’t grant a referendum in these circumstances, I feel it would lead to large scale demonstrations, with possibly even civil unrest creeping in.
52% was an absolutely overwhelming result that must be adhered to according to the English when they wanted Brexit "The people have spoken" they said Or does that only apply to when English people speak?
Survation are giving 52% Yes and others like Find Out Now regularly show similar. However with YouGov it’s nearer 40%. Ipsos(the Gold Standard) put No ahead as well. Sir John Curtice is, in all probability, correct to say that overall it’s about 50/50.
I've got a tremendous amount of respect for John Swinney, and I believe the huge personal sacrifices he has made over so many years in the service of the SNP deserve far greater recognition.
He's devoted a huge part of his life to the party, shouldered difficult responsibilities and remained committed through some incredibly challenging periods.
Whatever the pressures, he's continued to put the SNP and its future first. I think that loyalty, experience and dedication should never be taken for granted, and I genuinely want to see him succeed in rebuilding confidence and unity within the party.
I'm also firmly behind James Kelly in the SNP's internal elections. James is a highly regarded, principled and passionate voice for independence who is willing to challenge complacency and hold the party to its promises.
I want to see John supported in leading the SNP and James supported in keeping the party focused on its founding purpose.
Both men have something valuable to contribute, and I hope SNP members give James the backing he deserves while recognising John's years of commitment and personal sacrifice to the party.
I think John Swinney deserves real credit for the SNP's improving polling position. He's shown commitment, resilience and steady leadership through some very difficult times, helping rebuild confidence in the party. With the SNP 14 points ahead of Labour and independence at 52%, there's reason for optimism. John has given so much to the SNP over the years, and it's good to see signs of progress under his leadership.
SNP are proposing a sample of 1.5 million. But the central limit theorem in stats shows a properly random sample of about 1,000 already gives roughly ±3% precision for a near-50% proportion. Precision improves only with the square root of sample size, so gains beyond a few thousand are very small. A survey of 1.5 million is unnecessary for statistical accuracy. What matters is randomness: a large non-random or self-selected sample stays biased regardless of size.
A random sample of 5,000 already gives a margin of error of about 1.4 percent under the central limit theorem. Double it to 10,000 and you reach 1 percent; go to 20,000 and you are at 0.7 percent; hit 100,000 and the error shrinks only to 0.3 percent. Pushing all the way to 1.5 million gets you to a pointless 0.08 percent. Because precision improves only with the root of sample size, almost all the useful accuracy is already in hand by 20,000 or so. The rest is pure overkill. And none of these numbers mean anything unless the sample is actually random. A giant self-selected survey stays biased no matter how large it grows.
Do they all get shopping vouchers? What would be the point?Personally, I don't believe anything much that Swinney says, and the suggested megasurvey was a bit of off-the-cuff verbal spew that got all the coverage it deserved. Similarly, media in the US doesn't bother reporting much that Trump says any more.
YouGov, Scotland political snapshot, field work 29 Sept - 5 Oct, sample population 1,060
Should Scotland be an independent country (excluding usual neutral positions) No 53% Yes 47%.
Favourability of politicians (net): John Swinney -19 Andy Burnham +9 Nigel Farage -56 Nothing much to worry about. Burnham talks a good game (denouncing Thatcherism & colonisation of Palestinian West Bank) but won’t deliver. Folk will rumble this snake oil salesman before too long.

Ah yes...You Gov.....the pollster still weighting by 2014 data. Hey You Gov....loads of these folk are dead....I'm impressed you still managed a response from them!....:-)
Fair enough. When you're from Manchester, you really appreciate that Manchester is the greatest place in Manchester and people in other places want to know what Manchesterians think. I believe Mr Burnham is heading to Zurich next week to give the bankers there some Manchesterish banking insights. They'll learn a lot.
Burnham has a proposal for Swinney. If Swinney agrees to take commands from Burnham over matters which Swinney controls. Matters which Swinney was elected to control just a few months ago. Then unelected Burnham may open talks with elected Swinney at some unspecified point in the future where Burnham may or may not deign to grant powers to Swinney, Swinney may or may not be interested in.
You’d have to be an imbecile to go for that deal. Mind you, you’d have to be an imbecile to travel to England to have your photie took with the Major of Greater Peterborough.
i notice ITV and BBC interviewed both the Tory and Labour leaders about Scotland at lunctime but ommitted the First Minister of Scotland. Obviously an oversight on the part of the brit broadcasters.
7.50 The trouble is that vast areas of wind useable seabed were sold off for a fraction of their value in Kate Forbes's calamitous ScotWind auction. Remember, she wasn't sidelined by the SNP because of this incompetence but because she upset the trans mob by going to church.
8.51 Also, the £750 million raised through ScotWind was ringfenced for energy and biodervisity projects but half of it was diverted to prop up the budget. They're talking now about an oil wealth fund which presumably they would just fritter away carelessly too.
Another new article on the SNP website main page, from Gilruth, with Independence as a part of it. To replace one of the 8 out of 8 already there. All nicely building up to the crescendo of Swinney's speech tomorrow, which you'd hope, will satisfy all bar the most extreme septics (sic) about his and the SNP's commitment to Indy and indeed that referendum in THIS Holyrood term. Balance of power at the next UK GE don't cut it. Carrots are off the menu.
Over to you John, are you up in the club, all eyes on you, all eyes on you, cos if you duck it up, my eye's on you. I'm gonna scream and shout and let it out, I'll be sayin', "Oh-you-oh, you-oh-oh-oh". You are now duckin' with indy ref 2 and Scotland, titch.
'Dozens of masked Israeli settlers have attacked Palestinians and set fire to cars and olive trees during the annual olive harvest in the occupied West Bank.'
'A BBC team witnessed one of several attacks in farmland near the Palestinian village of Abu Falah. A local official said the attacks had injured 12 Palestinians, including four dual Palestinian American citizens.'
So, supporters of independence no longer rate YouGov as a polling company! I wonder why! They don’t seem keen on Ipsos either. One halfwit above says he dosen’t think they’re “Gold Standard” anymore because they use “electric telephone” to conduct their polls!! You couldnae make it up. Comical stuff.
We are rapidly approaching the end of 2026 and it has, without doubt, been a terrible year for Unionism.
Three of the four home nations having pro-indy leaders, SNP having bounced back after Murrell and forming a truly remarkable and record-breaking new term in Scottish Government, Yes easily leading in vast majority of Indy Polls, Reform eating itself alive with racist/sexist/fascists scandal after scandal and falling dramatically in polling, Restore being a non-event, the repugnant Donaldson child-rape scandal (and the inevitable Inquiry into its cover-up by Unionism) and the despicable and on-going financial and other links of most Unionist political parties to the Genocidal Fascist Scum in Zionist Israel.
No wonder the yoons on here and elsewhere are a tad upset.
What truly desperate stuff from Nats who can’t accept its game over for independence, or maybe it’s just the same halfwit posting nonsense. The fool@10:10 even tries to claim 17 out of 27 is about 70%, when it’s actually about 63%!!!!! He continues to make a complete fool of himself by saying this is the “vast majority”!! As I said earlier, far from the sharpest! What a plonker.
Desperate stuff from a desperate Yoon. Even if the previous poster was slightly out at 70%, a very substantial 63% for Yes as against a tiny 37% for No can definitely be described as 'the vast majority' of 2026 polls.
Jeez, the yoons are really getting themselves into a wee state and no wonder.
They are not only losing the plot, but also losing the argument and losing the Scots.
Listening to Keith Brown at the conference that he would like to ban/curtail opposition parties in an independent Scotland. Keith voting for parties in an election is called democracy. The current SNP are more akin to communists.
Oh dear. These insults get thrown about far too easy these days that apparently if your slightly right of center you’re a fascist racist scumbag. School boy politics. ps Scots for ever. Stick your open borders up your arse
Can't wait for John Swinney's speech at conference today.
After winning a fifth term, keeping the focus on delivering for people in Scotland and pushing independence forward, that's the balance we need. The movement feels stronger than it has in years.
Looking forward to hearing the vision for the next steps. The stars do feel like they're lining up once and for all.
What a thrilling time to be an SNP member. I wish I could be at conference this year. It is a buzzing experience. The sessions and meetings are packed, conversations overflowing with ideas and a real sense of purpose. You get the opportunity to meet ministers face to face, chatting about the right policies for Scotland. It’s a genuinely empowering experience. You feel part of something moving. It’s hands-on, grass roots, and full of possibility. Surrounded by people who care deeply about the things the SNP care about. The policies are being worked out. All of this makes me even prouder than ever to support the SNP. The momentum is strong. I look forward to see where John Swinney takes it in his speech today.
5:27, refreshing to see an independence supporter talking a bit of sense for a change. I’d add, in the Survation poll the Yes lead is down a point on the previous poll!
Poor wee sad man K C. I think what is most tragic is that he believes he is fooling people with his anon posts and K C posts praising each other. Laughable.
This doesn't really cover it, it's mostly about non-Indy policy including the nationalisation of buses - leave McGills alone please. And the likes of Citylink and Megabus. Apparently First is rubbish, why punish the rest because of them? https://archive.is/Xq3jO
Righty. It includes Independence a lot and actually ends with the word "Independence". 10 out of 10 for that.
BUT it doesn't say how we get a referendum, or do a UDI, or do a de facto referendum, and a lot of people will be hacked off about that, and I can understand that.
Me? I'm a little more patient, as long as I see the likes of Burnham panicking more and more with his indigestible slug-infested word salad, and Douglas Alexander sycophanting and drooling over Burnham like it's going out of fashion.
Bring it on! As his sister Wendy said before he back-stabbed her politically. Yes, I remember, you disgusting creature.
I just had a look at Wings, and on one thing he's totally correct.
Moving off Twitter for a Government is just stupidity on stilts. It should be about open communication not puerile petulance. I don't do twitter, but you can see a couple of tweets before it stops you.
According to the Herald today: "He [Swinney] pointed to a Survation poll commissioned by the Forum for Research and Energy (FoRE) which projected that Scots would vote for independence by 54% to 46% if a second referendum were held tomorrow, once "don't knows" are removed."
Anyone who thinks that No is not at 46% in this latest poll, is either a demented Wingnut or deluded wee Yoon. Not that there is much difference any more.
Magnanimous and interesting is better than stale and dull. The headline from the SNP conference: John Swinney calls for Scottish independence. That appears to be it until next year, which may be very similar. I think there was a potential headwear edict that won't happen. And they are still going to reshape local government the same as they didn't reshape social care, but they will still reshape health boards possibly into parellelograms, but probably not.
Another day, another extreme nationalist propaganda headline.
ReplyDeleteYou're probably right. Labour being 14 points behind is pretty standard for them these days. They seem to have given up any hope of being in government. They aim to be a pressure group these days, like the Lib Dems.

ReplyDeleteAfter winning a fifth term, keeping the focus on delivering for people in Scotland and pushing independence forward, that's the balance we need. The movement feels stronger than it has in years.
Looking forward to hearing the vision for the next steps. The stars do feel like they're lining up once and for all.
BBC web still giving `labour more prominence than the snp conference. Reminds me of when McQuarrie and co where in charge of pacific quay
ReplyDeleteRightly so.
DeleteFinish yer cereal KC.
DeleteWhat a thrilling time to be an SNP member.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed John Swinney's speech - both in terms of content and in terms of delivery. His leadership of the SNP is excellent.
DeleteCatastrophic headline. Is it from Truth Social?
ReplyDeleteLatest Survation Indy Poll, as just referenced by FM Swinney today. -
ReplyDeleteYES - 54%
No - 46%
Happy Weekend!
Good news.
DeleteDiscounting the one 50/50 draw, Yes has now been in the lead in 65% of all Indy polls in 2026.
That would definitely be termed as ' The vast majority of 2026 Indy polls'.
Satisfying.
Anon@3:52pm, I suspect you know full well that’s nonsense you’ve posted.
DeleteThe actual Survation figures were
Yes 47%
No. 44%
Undecided 9%
Of more concern is the recent More in Common poll
Yes 40%
No. 44%
Would not vote 8%
Don’t know 8%
Throw in the most recent YouGov poll, showing No 5 points ahead, and the direction of travel isn’t what we were hoping for at this stage.
Wrong.
DeleteEverything I posted was smack on the money,.
Yes has now led in 65% of all 2026 Indy polls including the one today, discounting the single draw.
Excellent overall result so far this year and a very dismal No 'success rate' of a tiny 35%.
Dress it up any way you like - Yes is comfortably in the winning seat by a fair distance, based on the year so far trend.
All the sweeter, as it seems to have really annoyed poor wee yoons like yourself.
Knock yourself out with more frantic and pointless postings, pal.
I will just sit back and enjoy the weather.
5:27, refreshing to see an independence supporter talking a bit of sense for a change.
DeleteI’d add, in the Survation poll the Yes lead is down a point on the previous poll!
You think that deluded yoonionist is a tad upset?
DeletePity the poor wee thing.
Lol.
DeleteThanking your own post, KC?
Yoon desperation personified.
Independence supporters spouting some serious bull.
DeleteThese fools probably take FIND OUT NOW polls for the NATIONAL seriously.
You couldnae make it up.
Poor wee sad man K C. I think what is most tragic is that he believes he is fooling people with his anon posts and K C posts praising each other. Laughable.
DeleteExcellent and rousing speech by Swinney this afternoon.
ReplyDeleteIndependence was front and centre in almost everything he said, which went down brilliantly with the membership at the venue.
I think our activists will have loved it as well.
SNP have, without a shadow of a doubt, turned the corner after Murrell and look very much back on track.
Great to see the sun beaming down on them in Aberdeen as well.
Yep.
ReplyDeleteSNP are definitely on the up again and Swinney's speech was a corker.
Nice to see him slag off the extreme right trash as well.
Onwards and upwards!
Truly excellent well-thought-through speech by John Swinney today.
ReplyDeleteFor some odd reason there is nothing from the National about Swinney's speech but here's an article from the Herald:
ReplyDeletehttps://archive.is/L8Kir
This doesn't really cover it, it's mostly about non-Indy policy including the nationalisation of buses - leave McGills alone please. And the likes of Citylink and Megabus. Apparently First is rubbish, why punish the rest because of them? https://archive.is/Xq3jO
DeleteThe SNP has his whole speech:
https://www.snp.org/what-are-past-glories-what-are-old-stories-if-we-cannot-build-a-future-fit-for-our-children/
Righty. It includes Independence a lot and actually ends with the word "Independence". 10 out of 10 for that.
DeleteBUT it doesn't say how we get a referendum, or do a UDI, or do a de facto referendum, and a lot of people will be hacked off about that, and I can understand that.
Correction: buses back into public control and regulation, not nationalisation (ownership).
DeleteSpaceships to be under council contol prior to the exodus to Mars.
DeleteYou don't need your spaceship, just an Audi Quattro.
DeletePerfect end to a perfect day.
ReplyDeleteWatching that two-faced turncoat Campbell once again flinging his rattles out of his battered wee pram at Swinney and SNP.
I think his fannypads are full again.
I just had a look at Wings, and on one thing he's totally correct.
DeleteMoving off Twitter for a Government is just stupidity on stilts. It should be about open communication not puerile petulance. I don't do twitter, but you can see a couple of tweets before it stops you.
It also leaves twitter to the UK Government - and the Scottish Office. I'm sure they won't take advantage of that though ...
DeleteMadness. They need to U-turn on that before doing a hari-kiri.
Leader of Scotland's party for independence mentions independence several times in keynote speech and gets standing ovation.
ReplyDeleteIs that where we are now?
To be fair, it was an excellent speech by Swinney.
DeleteClearly 54% Yes is nowhere near enough if Swinney is spending big amounts to try to convince more people.
Delete😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
DeleteYes have never polled 54% and I doubt ever will.
DeleteAnon at 9:02 PM and 9:05 PM
DeleteYou win the award for the most ignorant Anon of the day, and you had a lot of competition.
Anybody who seriously thinks Yes is at 54% has to be a sandwich short of the full picnic.
DeleteAccording to the Herald today: "He [Swinney] pointed to a Survation poll commissioned by the Forum for Research and Energy (FoRE) which projected that Scots would vote for independence by 54% to 46% if a second referendum were held tomorrow, once "don't knows" are removed."
Deletehttps://archive.is/L8Kir
Data table will be out in a day or two I daresay.
Anyone who thinks that No is not at 46% in this latest poll, is either a demented Wingnut or deluded wee Yoon.
DeleteNot that there is much difference any more.
Either way, they are a few bricks shy of a load.
I’m with anon@9:47pm, there’s no way, sadly, that Yes is at 54%. It’s just a piece of nonsense.
DeleteLol.
DeleteIs that right, pal???🤡🤡🤡😂😂😂
Aye it’s the talk of the steamie dontcha know
ReplyDeleteCarrot season again
ReplyDeleteLol.
DeleteAnother wee Wingnut?
zzzzzzzzzzz
Delete8.32 is obviously a dogger, sorry dugger.
ReplyDeleteIt's been a total eclipse of the Swinney.
ReplyDeleteMagnanimous and interesting is better than stale and dull.
I am sure John Swinney will really, really value your comments.
DeleteHow could he not? 😂😂😂
