The Find Out Now poll showed a Yes majority even though 16 and 17 year olds weren't interviewed

Thanks to Paul Kirkwood on Twitter for pointing out to me that the data tables are now available for the recent Find Out Now poll showing a majority in favour of independence.  It's a single question poll (or if there were other questions they haven't been released yet), so there's not a huge amount to add, but there are a few points of interest.

Firstly, the poll excluded 16 and 17 year olds, not for any sinister reason but simply because the Find Out Now panel is comprised of over-18s only.  When I commissioned a Find Out Now poll eighteen months ago, they actually managed to source the necessary number of 16 and 17 year old respondents from another polling panel, but that may not have been possible this time, or it may have just been decided not to do that because of cost. Whatever the exact reason, it means there's a chance that the Yes vote is being slightly underestimated even at 52%.

The turnout adjustment was decisive in pushing Yes into the lead in this poll.  Before the adjustment, No was ahead by 52% to 48%, and after the adjustment there was an exact reversal, with Yes ahead by 52% to 48%.  That doesn't in any way invalidate the result, because almost all polling firms use a turnout filter, but it does demonstrate the greater enthusiasm levels among Yes voters.

It's specified that the poll result was weighted by gender, age, region, and recalled vote from the 2024 general election.  If that's an exhaustive list, it means there was no weighting by recalled referendum vote in 2014, which would be a very good thing, and other polling firms would be wise to learn from that example, because weighting by a vote from more than a decade ago (with all the dangers of false recall) is getting into the realms of the ridiculous now. However, this methodological difference isn't necessarily the reason for Find Out Now being one of the more Yes-friendly pollsters.  If memory serves me right, they did introduce 2014 weighting at one point but it didn't change their results much.

I always wince when people start treating the regional voting breakdowns as gospel, because the subsample for each region is far too small to produce meaningful results. However, for what it's worth Glasgow has the highest Yes vote in this poll and the Highlands & Islands has the lowest.

A significant minority of independence supporters may have drifted back to Labour at the general election, but that doesn't mean they were giving up on independence.  The poll shows that 25% of people who voted Labour in July would vote for independence, and that rises to 28% if Don't Knows are stripped out.

Depressingly, the old gender gap we'd hoped we'd seen the last of is evident in this poll - there's a bulky Yes majority among men but a slender No majority among women.

  1. Thanks as always for your analysis James. I sent you a small donation the other day and I would encourage others to chip in what they can afford to keep you blogging.

If you do find yourself looking for a new political home in the coming weeks here’s one SNP member who hopes you’ll consider rejoining. It’s been beyond depressing to see all the scandals and skulduggery of the last few years. The only things that have kept me as a member are my good friend inertia, the knowledge that divisions within the Yes side are self-defeating (I know the high heid yins in the SNP are far from blameless on this front) and the hitherto forlorn hope that someone will emerge to clean the party up and reinvigorate the movement with a realistic vision for Scotland’s future. Without good people like you I fear we’ll be waiting a long time for this to happen though.

    1. Here's to those same hopes, anon.

Say, if you wouldn't mind my asking, who did you vote for in the leadership contest?

      Delete
    2. Kate and Ash in that order.

      Delete
    3. Has anything fundamentally changed within the SNP though?

Attempts to reform the SNP from within were attempted previously (the "good guys" campaign etc) and despite good people being elected onto the NEC it was undermined by the leadership and unable to function. Many left the Party in frustration after that.

Without something indicating things have changed re-joining the SNP at this stage will feel like a backwards self defeating move to many.

    4. I wonder if a good guys campaign might not succeed this time, given the changes at the top and the lack of an iron grip these days. It seems like an easy thing to try at least, and a lot more realistic to me than hoping/working for the complete destruction of the SNP and the phoenix-like rise of a new party from the ashes.

    5. I made a similar proposal to James a few days ago. He has invested a lot in Alba so maybe reluctant and I get that, but I remain hopeful. The grip of Sturgeon’s crew is weaker now and as always, I would back Forbes and Cherry. The religion and gender brigades can find a new home if they don’t like it. Independence first and last.

    6. It just feels pointless at this stage, most of the key people in charge of the Party from a few years ago still seem to be in key positions within the Party (I mean Sturgeon's Deputy is the Leader?).

There's been no reform indicating change or olive branches to the tens of thousands of people who have left. If anything the SNP today feels worse even from the SNP just a few years ago. There's been considerable more incompetence, scandals and still several legal cases outstanding. It's like asking people to enter a house on fire armed with a cup of water.

    7. Poster 1, 3 & 5 from this thread here again (maybe IfS is onto something railing against anonymous posters here!). I know it’s not an easy job to ease the crew aside, but the good guys did actually win last time. Given what has since emerged it seems highly unlikely they could be similarly ill treated a second time without risking a mass revolt in the membership. Worth a try anyway.

I’d love to see the likes of Cherry back in a position of influence and power in the party. Maybe then we’d get back to being a broad church, where different views are welcomed as a sign of strength and olive branches are extended to those who have been poorly treated in the last 10 years.

And yes, maybe it is like entering a burning house with a cup of water. But if that house is surrounded by a forest fire maybe it’s the least bad option.

    8. Joanna Cherry no longer represents the SNP and it's highly unlikely she ever will again
I understand her motivation politically now is the leadership of Alba

    11. Forbes 1, Ash 2 is exactly the ballot I'd have cast. I can't even imagine what a Regan-led SNP would have been like, but I’m certain Kate would have them in a far better position than they are now.

Of course, she wouldn't likely have bent over backwards like Swinney has to protect Nicola's public reputation and legal exposure at the cost of her own. When you pull the strings, you select your trusted stooge.

I'd like to think we could take back the SNP, get back behind the wheel, and start the long hard heave to get it all the way back on the road to Independence. It's currently stranded, very far in the weeds indeed. But the trouble is that it's not abandoned. The current administration have their careers and, in some cases, personal freedom from incarceration at stake.

I think they'll put up quite a fight to anyone taking *their party* away from them.

  15. To move on a bit, how many folks liked the video recording of the labour MP Mike Amesbury punching to the ground a man with his hands in his pocket and then proceeding to punch the crap out of the guy when he was on the ground.

Fabulous really because this guy is reputed to be a bit of an attack dog in the House of Commons.

For me it is a reflection of the utter thuggery that is so extant in so many English MPs. And it's a sentiment that I believe that is permeated through so many English MPs. That is evident with the name calling that has been given to Scots over the years.

But as the trials and travails visited upon Alex Salmond, Craig Murray, Mark Hirst and others show, the deep state has a bitter hatred for any democrat who would attempt to democratically secede Scotland from mother England.

Michael Amesbury MP just exposed the viciousness of him and his ilk.

We have only one thing to work out.
How do we get from ’The Dream Shall Never Die’ to a realistic, acceptable to all framework to convert a settled will Yes majority, because that IS where we’re now at, into a parliamentary majority to challenge the Brutish State?
The SNP has to be part of that, simply because they’re still there and the majority of the public are completely unaware how compromised and infiltrated they are.
They need manipulated from within as part of the strategy.
Part two HAS to be some form of umbrella Yes vote
Personally I think Alba is a busted flush, but could, if properly directed, be a part of a ’Scotland’s Dream’ Yes list vote incorporating IFS which makes Alba look mainstream along with groups like AUOB and any others.
Now would be a good time for fresh thinking.

    1. Poster above 8.03 is deluded, we are at the point now where Yes would win a referendum quite comfortably in the heat of campaigning (current polling either irrelevant or very healthy for Yes whichever way you see it). Any attempt at a No campaign would quickly implode, the wheels would fall off and it would completely unravel. Which is why it is so utterly depressing that we are a million miles away from any sort of plebiscite due to the charlatans in the SNP.

    2. Not that I agree with one single word that IFS ever utters but clearly Anon@5.06PM you have no understanding of how or what the Barnett formula is, how it's financed or how it's distributed
Let me quickly explain, "read a f*cking book" you moron

  37. My troll posting his lies and gibberish again at 3.52pm. Relentless shite. Who is paying you troll?

  38. Dr Jim says on WGD : " Every vote not SNP in every election caused this."
That is Jimbo complaining about England's budget being imposed on Scotland.
Untrue Jimbo it is people like you slavishly supporting the charlatan Sturgeon as she wasted all the votes for the SNP thst gave her multiple mandates to hold Indyref2 over many elections and years.

You are responsible. Get that tattoo on your hand - " 19/10/23 I will be fooled again"

    1. Troll at 4.21pm cannae even think up his own words. Here is another one drivel. That sums up the contents of all your posts on SGP. Just who is paying you to post your drivel?

  40. There's one person at least who said the articles were good but they wouldn't contribute while there was complete drivel below the line in comments. And there will be others like that.

    1. I've pretty much given up on the comments section since James seems to be content to leave it the hands of those who have no interest in the subject of independence, just a bit of schoolyard name calling.

    2. The blogger is responsible for the content and behaviour of those who post, James Kelly must agree with IFS or he'd be gone by now

  41. Stop picking on IFS. Posting on SgP keeps him off the streets and out of mischief.

  42. Given that over 60% of Scots voted Yes in 2014, why wouldn't the polls constantly show massive support? It's only the immigrants and the orange brigade who still support english rule.

Never forget that every no vote form a pensioner came after they were told they would not get their next pension. A direct threat to coerce a vote. That's still a crime. Gone unpunished and never commented upon for some reason.
Stealing an election is stealing an election. Nobody has to pretend that it never happened.

In reality it was 75% yes.

Scots voted Yes and always have. Only given the chance 3 times and twice overturned by our london colonial rulers.
