From 3rd May onwards, the Conservative government will owe its presence in office not to the will of the people but to the will of itself

Well, it's typical, isn't it.  Rather similar to the Azhar Ali incident, no sooner had I blogged about the chatter over a May election than Rishi Sunak had taken to the airwaves to rule it out.  I think technically he's only ruled out an election on the same day as the locals, so theoretically other dates in the spring remain possible.  But much more likely now is the autumn, which will mean an unusual juxtaposition between our own election and the US presidential election.

One thing that shouldn't go without note is that when the current parliament and government were elected in December 2019, the Fixed Term Parliaments Act was still in force, and 2nd May 2024 was thus fixed in law as the date of the following general election.  Voters were therefore choosing who they wanted to govern them until that date, but were expressing no view at all about what should happen thereafter.  It was well after the election that parliament voted to give the Prime Minister the power to extend his own term of office by up to eight months, and for the first time we now know for sure that he intends to take advantage of that power.  Which means that from 3rd May onwards, the government will owe its presence in office not to the will of the people but to the will of itself.

In peacetime, that is uncharted territory.  This is the sort of thing you'd expect to happen in Venezuela or Myanmar, not in an established Western European democracy.  Why it hasn't attracted more comment is beyond me.

    1. My favourite bit:

"Voters were therefore choosing who they wanted to govern them until that date, but were expressing no view at all about what should happen thereafter."

That second clause is elected politics everywhere. To govern is to select which things you never ask the electorate about. Nicola knew that very well.

The problem is that 11 Downing Street is haunted and the family that lives there is terrified they wake up shrieking in fear every night the noise they make wakes up our Prime Minuster and his family and that means they are always exhausted it isn't such a problem for the chappie in charge at the moment because he is not British and does not understand our ways but when Boris and his wifely companion was there it meant they got no sleep and couldn't think straight

  3. Well said James. Didn't know that. An example of how the UK and its unwritten constitution can make things up as they go along. Sunak and all future useless PMs will be able to credit Liz Truss for removing the worry of being branded the PM who lasted the shortest ever amount of time in office. I wonder what the odds are of both Sunak and Yousaf getting the boot out of office before the election. Must be a possibility if not a high probability.
Mind you Sunak saying he won't have an early election disnae mean he won't. Politicians changing their mind isn't exactly a rarity especially if they see an advantage for themselves.

    2. Exactly. He's clearly under pressure in his party to give it a go in May. I agree with those who are telling him that going on the same day as the locals is the only thing that can save them. He's made a political decision to say he's ruled it out. Take from that, and a cornered Tory, what you will.

  4. Back on topic, about the timing of the election: if it's not with the locals in May, I can see Sunak doing a true John Major and dragging it out till the final death throes of his term in January 2025. Cross his fingers "something turns up", and ultimately pray for terrible weather to keep the plebs at home.

Will Gaza still be a hot button issue by then? Frankly, the way Israel's conducting itself, perhaps so! But I wouldn't gamble on that myself if I was a cynical Tory looking for ways to fracture Labour's vote.

    1. November is the latest. He's not going to make himself look ridiculous by holding an election in the dead of winter just for the sake of two extra months.

      Delete
    2. It is two months during which the Tories and their cronies can continue to loot the coffers. It is also two more months for Labour to limp on without offering an alternative and for more people to become disenchanted. A January election will be in poor weather and poor weather affects turnout and low turnouts tend to favour the Tories.

On the other hand having a GE on 2, May, might actually save some Tory Councillors. Turnout at GEs are higher than for local government and despite the polls, some disgruntled Tories will, in the end vote for the Tories. The consequent higher turnout for the Council elections will, likely, mean more Council seats for Tories. They will suffer big losses, but not as big as might have been otherwise.

      Delete
    3. That's exactly the thinking behind going for May: get the councillors and local parties on board. "Fellow Tories: we are all in this together."

Besides, if Gaza's still hurting Labour's youth vote, all the merrier for them.

    6. It will be November, which is not the dead of winter in the south of England where all the Tory voters will happily come out to vote on a nice balmy day
In the north of England it will only be slightly chilly and not nearly too cold to hold back Tory voters who always turn out no matter what the weather anyway, or they post it in

Some folk in Scotland have this funny idea that we're part of this, but if it's freezing your bits off here and keeping you by the fire, rest assured the Tory voters will brave the wind and rain to go out and vote Labour Tory or Lib Dem depending on who has the best hope of defeating the SNP

You have to hand it to the English when it comes to keeping hold of their Scottish property, they do know how to co-operate and they do know how to divide and conquer

They've been doing it for hundreds of years, they built an empire making indigenous peoples fight with each other so they could rule over them all

And how did they do it? They paid people to publicly oppose them but privately owned them, then they created other political parties that worked for them but the people of the countries they ruled never knew it, so that a vote for any other party was still a vote for them
And all the while the people's of all these countries thought they had democracy, then they found out
Scotland still hasn't twigged after 300 years
Labour Tory Liberal Democrat, one party one mission one country

BTW, the Independence for Scotland poster is a plant with one mission one party one country, he's no more on the side of Scotland than the Queen of England, he's just doing his job for England

As a comment on the subject matter for the nicophants to think about - why would any decent Chief Executive (and Murrell wisnae that) leave a motor home depreciating in value on his mother's driveway for years when it could be sold. All the time SNP/WGD numpties believed the nonsense that the membership was increasing.
Now Sturgeon may well be innocent of any wrongdoing on financial matters or the lies about membership numbers but she certainly is not innocent of other wrongdoing and that goes for all of Sturgeon's gang. And that ain't speculation either.

    7. I see the SNP propagandist who self IDs on his nationality, the liar Irish Skier, seems to think that because Flynn makes a joke about giving it to the tartan army to use in Germany that somehow means everything is all above board regarding its purchase. The SNP who could buy a motorhome during a pandemic, hold an election in a pandemic but not hold a census nor Indyref2. A motorhome that was not used and nobody knew about it. What sort of numpty do you have to be to accept you can hold an election in a pandemic but cannae hold a census. If you can hold an election you can hold a referendum.
I have family members who have purchased a campervan ( nothing like the luxury motorhome) and are using it to get to Germany, travel around Germany and sleep in it. They financed it themselves.

The SNP have never to my knowledge stated how much of the ring fenced money was provided by donations from SNP members and how much from Yes supporters. What plenty of SNP politicians, and WGD numpties, have lied about is that it was all from SNP members.

      Delete
    8. IfS the motor home was bought as a precaution for campaigning in a global pandemic. A perfectly sensible precaution by the SNP leadership team at the time.

    9. Anon at 10.15pm - a reasonable attempt to convince that there is nothing to see here and let's move on. Read that sort of stuff on WGD loads of times. It is nonsense on WGD and nonsense on SGP. The SNP campaigned during the pandemic but the motor home was safely parked on Murrells mother's driveway unused. Nobody knew it was there - not even the current SNP FM - nobody knew it had even been purchased. Any other SNP assets stored at Murrell's parent's house? Only numpties would buy your easily refuted explanation anon. It may work on WGD but sorry you cannae feed me your carrots 🥕🥕🥕🥕🥕.

    11. The motor home was hidden away from prying eyes because they intended to keep it for themselves. It really isn't a big mystery.

What IS a mystery is what happened to the rest of the 'ring fenced' indyref2 fund. Have you an answer for that?

      Delete
    12. Felix: the campervan was purchased in order to serve as a campaign battle bus ahead of the 2021 Holyrood election due to Covid restrictions. However this plan proved sub-optimal in the run-up to the nationwide vote as pandemic curbs were gradually eased, based on science and public health criteria, by Nicola Sturgeon’s government. Nicola Sturgeon's government was widely praised for its handling of the pandemic and the SNP went on to do well in the 2021 election. The campervan was simply not needed and hence it was set aside and not used. It would have been sold in due course. There is nothing to see here at all.

The campervan was probably not a good fit with the specifics of individual political campaigns for individual politicians and had been earmarked for national use ll across Scotland rather than the kind of local campaign that Mile Russell was running. In the event the campervan was not needed fkr campaigning purposes because the covid restrictions were relaxed.

  22. On today's Sunday Show, Humza Yousaf really showed his skill, handling tough topics with ease and confidence.

He spoke clearly and connected with people watching, making complicated stuff easy for ordinary people to understand.

Yousaf answered hard questions calmly and wisely, showing he knows what he's talking about.

His performance today didn't just show he's good at talking; it also showed he's all about being open and honest, and getting ordinary people to come together around his ideas.

He left a big impression, proving he's not just a talker but a leader who can make a real difference as FM of Scotland.

No chance of me forgetting it and there is no chance of me forgetting it was Murray Foote who was the editor of the Daily Redcoat who was behind it. Where is Murray Foote today? - he is the Chief Executive of the SNP. So there is nobody else in Scotland who could take up this position other than the very person who helped scupper Scotland's freedom in 2014. Was the position advertised? Was anyone else interviewed? Yet you are expected to believe this 2024 version of the SNP is for Scottish independence. Aye right. The place is full of Britnats like Foote. 2. I am used to getting trolled by Britnats and SNP/WGD numpties but getting trolled by an SNP robot probably set up by Foote himself is a new experience.

"Excellent leadership" the robot troll says. He cannnae even control his own MPs yet people tell us he can deliver Scotland from Westminster. Two recent examples:-
      1. Yousaf says he cannae comment on the Branchform investigation as it would be inappropriate to do so. Yet his Westminster leader Flynn says the polis should give the SNP back their motorhome to use in the GE or give to the Tartan army to use in Germany.
      2. Wishart says he is not using the leaders Tory free slogan as it is nonsense. I agree with Wishart for once. I say that because I think it is wrong in principle but Pension Pete disnae want to upset Tories in his constiuency.

      Delete
    3. As regards Flynn, his comments were humorous. As regards Wishart, he is a highly valued MP who is fully free to run his own campaign in his own terms subject to the usual constraints in terms of fidelity to SNP party policy. In all of this, both politicians have made a mark and both fully support Humza's leadership.
