Just a quick note to let you know that I have a new article at the
International Business Times, about the rather amusing irony of the day : that everyone in Westminster had assumed Nicola Sturgeon was bluffing, and yet in the end it was Theresa May's bluff that was called. You can read the article

ReplyDeleteThe more Theresa May tells the Scots what's good for them, the more they are likely to give her the finger
Good article James. I came to your site for the last referendum and I'm back again for the next. Read your recent posts about potential swings to Yes. Amazing so much has changed in the landscape since the last referendum.
ReplyDeleteWish I was confident this time round but the collapse in oil versus Brexit are 2 big unknowns and how they will play with the electorate. Coupled with the which currency question there is a rocky road ahead. Bookies are saying odds are for Independence, did that happen last time around?
Thanks
If Project Fear was the 'magic bullet' the westminster bubble thought it was for the first indyref, then there's no way on god's green earth they would have spent ALL their time and put EVERYTHING into making THE VOW the absolute centrepiece of the final most vital days of the the campaign.
DeleteTHE VOW was blasted across the airwaves by the British Broadcasting Corporation, STV, C4, 5, Sky and every single one of the of pro-unionist newspapers in scotland. (which as we all know, massively outnumbered any pro-scottish independence ones)
The unionists and SLAB bet the house on THE VOW and it unravelled mere hours after the vote.
SLAB are self-evidently an irrelevance now and will hardly be keen to repeat their 'experience' for the next scotref. (Except for the more hardline Yoon British Nationists in SLAB Who will not be a significant number or campaigning force)
Any NEW VOW will be greeted with hilarity from scots.
As will another attempt at "Better Together" given the lurch from the tories to the far-right and the likelyhood they could be in power till 2030 or even beyond.
That leaves more fear and more scaremongering.
Of which, most has already been utterly debunked.
Much of the rest can equally apply to the tory Brexit process.
Something which could charitably be called incompetence personified, with that delightful helping of witless arrogance the tories do so well.
Not to mention the westminster bubble still seems utterly clueless as to the real state of play in scotland.
Ruth Davidson's Scottish tories are LESS popular than Corbyn's Labour party.
SCON tory leader as saviour of the union?
Yer aff yer fucking heid if ye believe that pish. :D
what's funny the unionists kept egging her on to call a referendum
ReplyDeleteI have egged on Knickerless as it will finish her. She can retire to the Maldives a millionairess after conning the Jock mugs for decades.
DeleteWe have won the argument that is why yer erses are nippin. Call the referendum Nat sis.
DeleteWe have brexit, we are treating Knickerless with contempt like the frumpy numpty she is and she will still not call it.
Jock bottle merchants. Up yer lederhosen.
Absolute bloody state of this terrified Tory roaster.
DeleteHe's a daft wee tory twit isn't he.
DeleteYep. Cheltenham's little helper is a gift that keeps on giving.
DeleteThe SNP with the circa 2m respondents to their survey on Scottish attitudes have a much better handle on the state of play than polls undertaken for the unionist press.
ReplyDeleteNicola wouldn't call for a referendum unless they were confident they can win it.
We know who can be persuaded and who is a lost cause.
DeleteThough, to be fair, we had a pretty good read on that anyway as the survey was by no means the only thing set in motion after the first indyref.
It may well be a bumpy ride since tory chaos will never be too far away when it comes to Brexit. They will be desperate enough to do all manner of cretinous jawdropping things during the campaign. Count on it.
BUT the point about the first result a great many missed, particularly in the westminster bubble, was the pervasive air of a 'final warning' and 'last chance' to westminster that a significant portion of those who voted No in scotland felt as they gritted their teeth and held their nose in the polling booth.
They also were given fair warning by the scottish public multiple times since the first indyref with some staggering and unprecedented SNP wins.
However, the tories, labour and the westminster bubble simply ignored it. Because they really are that incompetent.
Hell mend them.
We really need to ditch this idea the polls are biased. We had that in 2014 - again and again, people claiming it was all a conspiracy and Yes would win in the end, it didn't happen. Polls aren't perfect, but they're certainly not rigged. I'll vote Yes this time around, but let's be real about the challenge - No is still the favourite to win, but this time it's at least a fair fight, not one in which Yes is starting from a long way behind.
Delete"We really need to ditch this idea the polls are biased."
DeletePolls are a snapshot of sentiment. They are heavily dependent on sample size which can cause bizarre results and outliers.
That's an inevitable limitation and a result of a public notoriously hard to poll in this day and age. It is not a conspiracy or proof of bias.
The bigger the sample the better the quality of the snapshot and the more meaningful the results are as a general rule. Nothing controversial about that whatsoever.
You need to catch up on James previous blogs to see where he explains where the source and by that the questions become less than helpful and actively detrimental to fair and honest polling. You have to compare like with like. Unionist papers shrieking about polls showing 'spectacular' falls or rises when they are clearly not the same question are meaningless noise - just as an example.
Push polling is also absolutely a thing. It is not a conspiracy. It is among the most common tactic used by newspapers looking for a quick sensationalist headline and unscrupulous politicians and it has been for decades. Nixon used them FFS.
Incidently the bookies have Yes as favourite to win this time.
Not that they mean all that much to be perfectly honest. They are as much a snapshot as a poll is but even more notorious in their ability to have factors such as sentiment, hype, mega-punters throwing money around and particular demographics which can skew their odds wildly.

So, & I can scarecy believe this,MPs have just given UK Govt green light to deport 3m people if it doesn't get what it wants in #brexit deal
I voted No in 2014 but will vote Yes this time around, largely because of Brexit. My plea to those campaigning for Yes would be simple: learn from the last referendum and don't make the same mistakes. There are a few specific things I'd highlight:
ReplyDelete1. Don't let angry, Wings Over Scotland style campaigning take the lead. This is a difficult one because I know a Campbell-rant against the BBC gets cheered to the rafters among some of the independence movement, but it also makes the entire proposition of independence look like it's driven by angry identity politics rather than reasoned pragmatism. It put people off last time, don't let it do so again.
2. Don't make Labour voters (and some pro-EU Lib Dems who might have come round to Yes) the enemy. It's safe to say Labour aren't going to campaign as strongly for No as they did last time and that many of their supporters (who are dwindling but still exist) are open to Yes. One of the core arguments you saw again and again in the last referendum was an attack on Labour for being "Red Tories". That makes sense in a Holyrood election, it makes no sense here. Reach out to those who are open to Yes, try and build a real cross-party Yes movement with a genuine Labour/Lib Dem presence in it. It's completely doable, there are enough Labour and Lib Dem figures with serious reservations about Brexit for it to happen, and it would make a huge difference to the credibility of independence. If the Tories are the only party making a strong No argument it's a massive advantage for Yes so don't push every Labour and Lib Dem supporter to the other side.
3. Engage honestly with the evidence. One of the major things that put me off Yes last time was the way every counter-argument or inconvenient piece of evidence seemed to be brushed under the carpet or derided as being biased. Again, this sort of argument instinctively appeals to some Yes supporters, but it also puts off those in the centre. We have to be honest and accept some parts of the independence case are less than perfect. The economic figures are much worse now than they were in 2014. We don't have to highlight the negatives, but we do have to have a better argument than just deriding the figures or anyone who mentions them. There's a stack of credible evidence on the negative economic effects of a hard Brexit. The economic case has to be that both situations are problematic economically, but that independence at least sets us on the right path (in the EU, part of the single market) rather than staying in a hard Brexit-UK.
The stunning rise in the Yes Vote from the very low 30s at the start of the last campaign to 45% at the end, the following jawdropping westminster result and exceptional scottish election result might just be a hint that we do actually have a fairly decent understanding of the scottish public and voter.
DeleteWhich is not to argue for complacency but merely to underline that a vast majority of the comedy 'outrage' and 'angry campaigning' narrative was - and as we can plainly see from the hilarity of the westminster bubble media reaction tonight - still is, complete bollocks.
The first referendum was surprising in how little poison there actually was outside the hardline extremist Orangemen, Rangers 'fans' and True Blue Tory headbanger cults. You compare it with the Brexit ref (which, I assure you, many scots did) and it's not even close.
When they deploy the smears, false outrage and 'angry Nats' bollocks again - and they will - it's chances of success after the repugnant tory and UKIP campaigning on Brexit is vanishingly small.
You do not waste your time engaging with obvious No voters and you present your arguments (to the public's face mind) calmly and without hyperbole.
You certainly don't need much of a 6th sense to spot the angry walking Daily Mails as they look for an argument. Nothing upsets them more than when you smile and say 'Your mind is made up then. Have good day.' and you politely move on to someone who is interested. The Daily Mails sometimes won't accept this and continue to try and be obnoxious which, happily, drives those on the fence more firmly into our camp as they look on.
If someone brings up Labour being Red Tories so be it. It is hardly some minority view what with them being an irrelevance. Likewise, if the public hammer into the tories or Lib Dems you do not get up on your high horse over that. You DO call out anyone who thinks shouting or chanting is fine. It's not. Save that for the rallies. We also all know how to campaign safely and nobody goes out without knowing the basics.
The westminster bubble media is a lost cause. We learned that much from their hysterical smearing not only in the first IndyRef but every subsequent election. The SNP and Yes leaders will, of course, have to go through the motions and be as polite, reasonable and forthcoming as they can be on TV. However, we know perfectly well that we can expect nothing but the usual arrogant westminster establishment sneering and Britain First attitudes and have ensured we do not rely on them to get our message across.
There is no harm in stressing that we need to be a competent, positive and persuasive campaign.
There is also no harm in pointing out the obvious. That the Yes campaign can not and will not let lies and smears go unchallenged where they need to be.
That does not mean engaging with every Yoon headcase and BritNat in the media. It does mean annihilating all the old lies peddled by an out of touch westminster media with the evidence. Such as the Euro, Spanish Veto, and 'subsidy junkie' lies.
"The stunning rise in the Yes Vote from the very low 30s at the start of the last campaign to 45% at the end, the following jawdropping westminster result and exceptional scottish election result might just be a hint that we do actually have a fairly decent understanding of the scottish public and voter.
DeleteWhich is not to argue for complacency but merely to underline that a vast majority of the comedy 'outrage' and 'angry campaigning' narrative was - and as we can plainly see from the hilarity of the westminster bubble media reaction tonight - still is, complete bollocks."
Here's the thing: if you want to win those people over (like me) who voted No in 2014, you have to listen to the reasons why they voted No in the first place. What I described above is a list of fairly standard objections No voters had in the first campaign. It's not "bollocks" and I'm not writing to you from some Westminster bubble (which is just as alien to me as it is to you): these are views grounded entirely in the way some sections of the campaign operated.
Wings Over Scotland (not to single it out for any particular reason) is absolutely aggressive, emotional, identity-politics driven, obsessed with the media (just look at their word cloud if you need evidence of that) and divisive. Now you can perhaps win a referendum with those tactics - the Leave campaign did it - but for me the single biggest shot in the arm Yes could have this time around would be to have credible non-SNP voices (senior Labour politicians, middle of the road media commentators, academics, neutral think tanks) making dispassionate and pragmatic cases for Yes. Those are exactly the sort of people Wings and similar sites/campaigners completely alienate. I'm one of them.
I described the 'angry campaigning' narrative as complete bollocks because it was. It was a fabrication. One of the many standard tools used by unionists and their mouthpieces like the Daily Mail, Express etc. alongside other debunked smears and lies. I see no reason to give it credence now any more than back then.
DeleteWe know exactly what the campaign was actually like and it was a million miles from the nonsense peddled by unionists in the media and from other unionist parties.
If that upsets you then I'm afraid I can't help you because it was absolutely the experience of those in the Yes campaign. Those who grew weary of the smears and who will have absolutely no patience for them this time around either. Particularly after the unedifying spectacle of the Brexit campaign and the abomination of an MP being gunned down in cold blood on the streets.
Nobody is asking you to like Wings. Some do some don't. Here's a tip, don't read him because nobody is forcing you to.
However, the monstering and conflation of one website with the entire Yes campaign while the BNP, Orange Order, UKIP, Ulster Extremists and out and out Fascists campaigned happily alongside Labour, the lib dems and the tories is a wee bit much to take to be honest.
The idea that Rev Stu had droves of scottish voters sorrowfully shaking their heads and deciding "That's IT! He's been incredibly rude about a tory again and turned me into a No!" is admittedly hilarious, but not to be taken very seriously. If you have a beef with him take it up with him directly. The Wee Blue Book was a very solid campaign tool which cannot be denied.
It's also the job description of a media watchdog to be obsessed by the media. So you'll forgive me if this is beginning to sound more and more like sour grapes and that you and he have previous.
There are no neutral think tanks. It's adorable that you think so but they are set up for a specific reason and set up with cold hard cash from politicians who want a specific message to punt. Neutral academics? Aye, mebbes, but they won't get called on while the rent-a-gob predictable opinions will.
Middle of the road media commentators??? Where do these exotic beasts hail from because they sure as shit aren't on any TV screen or newspaper in scotland or rUK.
We will get a very decent amount of former No voters from across the spectrum who have turned Yes to highlight. We already have. But again, highlighted by whom and where exactly? I assure you, it won't be on the unionist dominated media any time soon. We know this and we accept it whether we like it or not.
Now your post is why we need wings. Obsessed by the media? Man I give up. That is the point of the site man, get a grip. Any hook best o luck with your pish. I for one have you marked down as a Nawbag through and through. I could go on but I'm trying to be nice.
DeleteTo restore Britain’s competitiveness we must begin by deregulating the labour market. Political objections must be overridden. It is too difficult to hire and fire and too expensive to take on new employees. It is intellectually unsustainable to believe that workplace rights should remain untouchable while output and employment are clearly cyclical

You sound a lot like CommonSpace/RISE, Kyle. BBC needs to be called out and I know of no empirical evidence to back your assertion it injured the YES campaign. That was of course a charge the yoon camp (and commonspace/rise) was wont to make. Any strategy that serves to further undermine the BBC should be actioned. They are the principle threat, not yoon politicians. The BBC is in every home of every voter. The unengaged have better things to do than spend time on the internet discussing politics. They tend to absorb political memes by a process of osmosis, and the BBC owns the megaphone. The drumbeat of propaganda from the state broadcaster needs be countered by targeting the BBC's credibility directly and often. The leaders of YES didn't do that last time. If a fanatically biased MSM is the elephant in the room, then the BBC is the 800lb gorilla riding atop it.
Kyle: "2. Don't make Labour voters... the enemy. "
No one has done so.
"It's safe to say Labour aren't going to campaign as strongly for No as they did last time"
No, I don't think it is safe to say that. I just saw Anas Sarwar .
"3. Engage honestly with the evidence. One of the major things that put me off Yes last time was the way every counter-argument or inconvenient piece of evidence seemed to be brushed under the carpet or derided as being biased. "
I didn't see it that way, but you did. This time the choice is clearer. May has strongly signalled her intent to abolish or emasculate the Scottish Parliament and bring Scotland under direct London rule, stripped of any pretensions to nationhood.
Let us say it boldly. We can choose to be:
independent within the EU and the $17 trillion single market,
or
a region targeted for 'managed decline' in a debt-ridden, isolated, and xenophobic little England.
How much of the 17 trillion will Scotland obtain and how much is it at present?

DeleteKyle,
ReplyDeleteHave you been listening to BBC R4 Today program this morning? Packed with half truths, outright lies, and twisting, and pervaded by an obvious bias. If this is not pointed out by someone is that reasonable? If you missed it listen on iPlayer and get back to me.
A lot of what you say makes sense, but you may be in danger of giving the UK deep state too much credit for being fair and reasonable.
That said, the way to win this is for all those who feel that yes is the way to go to stand together, make independence the issue, and present our case.
We also must say to the Unionists that it is incumbent on them to present a case for Union, Brexit, and 30 years of Tory government. That's what they are offering, let's ask them why that's better.
Wings may be a bit abrasive but it is absolutely required in order to counteract the xenophobic right wing press south of the border who print lies and distortions about Scotland at every opportunity,as well as anyone else who threatens to undermine the Rule Britannia mind set e.g. the Judiciary in England.
