Just a passing thought : in the light of Philip Hammond helpfully pushing Scotland towards independence by declaring that it will be impossible for us to remain in both the UK and the EU, I'm wondering if the SNP's strategy should be roughly as follows -
1) With the help of the new body of experts, devise a plan that could at least theoretically lead to Scotland remaining in both the UK and EU. (It would probably have to go beyond federalism and involve the UK reinventing itself as a loose confederation of sovereign states - because to remain in the EU, Scotland will need at least some control over foreign policy.)
2) Present the proposal to the UK government on a take-it-or-leave-it basis : "You told the people of Scotland that voting No to independence would keep the country in the EU. This is the only way of honouring that promise. What's it to be?"
3) After the UK government rejects the proposal, beg them to change their minds. "Don't force us to leave the UK just to stay in the EU."
4) Once the proposal is rejected for a second time, point out that London has sabotaged any realistic chance of Scotland remaining in the UK, and call an independence referendum.

What a difference a year makes...
Westminster elite's message to Scottish MPs in 2015 -
"Aw-dah, AW-DAH! It is a DISCOURTESY to this House for honourable gentlemen and honourable ladies on the Scottish National Party benches to - AW-DAH! - to applaud points they agree with. They MUST LEARN to instead make deep moaning sounds as if they are simulating an orgy for an audio drama. AW-DAAAAAH! That's what NORMAL people do, and if it's good enough for us - AW-DAAAAAAAAAAH! - if it's good enough for us, it's good enough for the honourable gentlemen and honourable ladies on the Scottish National Party benches."
Westminster elite's message to Scottish MPs in 2016 -
"Aw-dah, AW-DAH! It is DISRESPECTFUL of honourable gentlemen and honourable ladies on the Scottish National Party benches to fail to applaud wildly in this House. Look, I'm doing it, Jeremy Hunt is doing it, even - AW-DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH! - even Liz Kendall is doing it. You're just spoiling it for everyone."

ReplyDeleteBrexit Secretary David Davis says UK 'will quit the EU in December 2018'
http://archive.is/Esd0X
When you think about it,there is no way BoJo and pals are going to have someone representing Scottish interests sitting in on their negotiations with the EU.
ReplyDeleteBoJo tells Juncker (or whoever) "This is what we are going to do".
Alex Salmond sitting next to him says "Oh no we(Scotland) aren't".
So,unless we have separate negotiations with the EU,at the same time as BoJo and pals,we will be presented with their solution and told if we don't like it we know what we can do.
I think we will find out pretty soon in the process whether the EU is serious about retaining Scotland as part of the EU or not and that will have a major say in the outcome.
All we have to do then is convince the Scottish electorate that breaking up Blighty wasn't our idea and that the deal being offered from Europe is better than sticking with Little England.
Will HM press allow us to get that message across however?
Britnats continue to do the most damage to their beoved united kingdom, so-called. Tee hee. It has to be IndyRef2; there's now no other way.
ReplyDeleteThe twits trapped in the Westminster bubble are struggling to be heard right now above the deafening noise of barrel scraping as Hideaway May's cabinet of third raters is being hastily cobbled together.
DeleteThis is going to make John Major's attempts to present a unified front look hilarious.
They will be longing for the 'calm stability' of Osbrowne's Pasty omnishambles before too long.
Referendum or nae referendum we Brits will always be Brits. Looking forward to the renewed BRITISH PASSPORT. That will scunner you Nat sis so awa wie ye, go and crawl up Kaiser Merkel's erse.

ReplyDeleteI like it.
I doubt he's even that, just someone who gets his jollies off by having some sort of interaction with real people, rather than S&M porn.

ReplyDeleteThe troll reminds me of the worst kind of student politician. The type that screams insults and accusations of fascism whenever an ill-thought-out point is skewered in reasoned debate.
DeleteDon't encourage the prick. He comes on shift in about an hour. Sometimes if you just forget him he goes n plays with himself somewhere else.
DeleteIts just such a pity James doesn't take up our offer of money to migrate to a troll control site..
A troll free site would be good. If James has a fundraiser in the future I hope he goes for a site that he manage, if not perhaps a few trusted volunteers can help him monitor the site for him.
DeleteAnon, have you ever attempted reasoned debate. Your reasoned debate is to ignore the will of the people at the ballot box you fash.

DeleteFitlike, min? When you comin up for another "session"?
It's a hunch, but I suspect there's a significant overlap between those who complained that declining to applaud Cameron is "classless", and those who think the way Corbyn voted on Iraq is less important than the type of jacket he wears.
ReplyDeleteYou Nat sis need lessons in common courtesy and good manners. The Nat si MP'S were quite clear why they were not clapping as they were pissed aff wie Cameron for giving us a democratic vote. You Nat sis have a democratic deficit. Bunch a weans.

"We're all in this together." - The incompetent fop
Philip Hammond isn't thwarting anything, more stating the realpolitik of the EU. No-one is opposed to a special deal if it can be arranged... It just appears very difficult.
ReplyDeleteThe best, or maybe least worst, option for both nationalist and unionist (at least those who like devolution) is to agitate for mini-brexit a.k.a EFTA/Norway and the concurrent transfer of all non reserved powers from Brussels to Holyrood.
There is a path to tread which - at least for a short while - a clear majority of us can follow.
The deal should be easy. The Merkelites must drop their insistance on free movement of people and get back to the original trade agreement.
DeleteThe EU Parliament and Commission is a gravy train and not required. All that is required is a body to ensure that free trade is fair.
There you go GWC 2 has saved the world and knickerless does not have crawl.
That was a rather extreme view from gwc2, there was some cohesion with the idea of free movement with free market. There is the off -the-shelf Canada agreement also.
DeleteBut the whole thing requires thought, agreement and effort.
It was a view but not extreme. My view was in accordance with the original ECM agreement. TRADE.

James' suggestion is fairly close to exactly what is happening right now.
ReplyDeleteNo half measures full Eu citizenship or indi 2.
