MEN of ENGLAND! It's time to join the Oompa-Loompas... (If Carlsberg did post-match analysis)

I don't really want to rub salt in the wound for our friends down south, because I remember how I felt on the day Scotland were knocked out of the World Cup nine months ago - but the headline popped into my head, and it was hard to resist.

My main thought after the disallowed Lampard goal was that I hope England either a) win the match or b) take a total hammering, otherwise we'll have another 'Hand of God' scenario and never hear the end of it for the next 200 years. Judging by the way the BBC concluded their coverage, however, it doesn't appear the hammering will make much difference on that front...

I wonder when the poor referee can expect his first death threats from England fans!

You'd think this would shut their media up now, wouldnt you? I mean, they must surely realise by now that they are NOT a good team and shouldn't even be considered as possible winners of a major competition. They humiliated themselves at this world cup and didnt even qualify for euro2008. They should just take a leaf out of the Scots book and EXPECT to lose...its much easier that way!

  3. I wonder if this will do damage to some of the multi-million pound sponsorship deals they have going. I mean who wants to be associated with failures?

And what about the Wags' contracts to write (or not write) nonsense for the daft magazines at phenomenal rates?

  4. Tris, I also wonder if big-name foreign managers will think twice the next time England come knocking, after what's happened to both Sven Goran Eriksson and Capello.

Ezio - Leaving aside 1966 (there, I've just done a Tyldesley) it's striking how poor England's record in major international competitions is, given that they paint themselves as one of the major powers of world football. They've never reached the final of the European Championships, for instance.
