An alternative government without Corbyn is a non-starter

So Nicola Sturgeon today repeated her hint of a few weeks ago that the SNP would be prepared to install Jeremy Corbyn as Prime Minister on a temporary basis to prevent a No Deal Brexit.  Of course SNP, Plaid and Green support wouldn't be quite enough to give Corbyn a majority - he would also need the Lib Dems and at least some of the ex-Labour or ex-Tory independents.  But the intriguing thing from a constitutional point of view is that he wouldn't actually need to win a majority in a parliamentary vote before becoming Prime Minister - the Queen could appoint him and see if it works out, which is essentially what she did with Boris Johnson.  What circumstances she would do that in are unclear, but if Johnson was to lose a vote of no confidence, SNP support could leave Corbyn as the only game in town.

On the other hand, if Jo Swinson does prove able to block a Corbyn premiership, history may not be kind to her, especially if a No Deal Brexit is the outcome.  What I truly don't understand is why her focus is on keeping Corbyn out rather than getting herself back into government in a senior position.  If the SNP decide to support a Corbyn-led government from the outside, Swinson would even have a claim to be Deputy Prime Minister, as long as she could accept Corbyn as PM.  That's how governments of national unity work - not by exclusion, but by inclusion.  Intra-party "dream tickets" work on a similar basis - for example, Kinnock/Hattersley or Blair/Prescott.

Another possibility would be the model briefly tried (not terribly successfully) in Germany in the late 1990s, whereby Corbyn would remain Labour leader and would hold a very senior position in government (such as Chancellor), while someone else becomes figurehead Prime Minister with his blessing.  But really, any temporary government in which Corbyn is not the dominant player is a non-starter, and if the Lib Dems are remotely serious about stopping Brexit, it's about time they woke up to that.

  1. From the outside, is there ANY body in labor that would be okay? Milliband as PM , deputy PM? Anything? I am puzzled by how in a system where people change parties all the time there is NEVER someone acceptable. Would lib Dems and SNP vote for Chuckie or Sadiq?

    1. Chuka is in the wrong party, Sadiq isn't an MP. A possible compromise would be somebody from the soft left of the Labour party who the Corbynites and the Lib Dems could both just about live with. Maybe Margaret Beckett or Emily Thornberry. But realistically an alternative government would be led by Corbyn himself.

    2. Wouldn't milliband as deputy help re anti semitic issue? I would think your ideas are good. When 20% if MP's and ex are in different parties I would think there would be someone. Watson really blew thus by stabbing Corbyn from beginning. If he had been loyal he could have played the reluctant warrior card.

  6. Worth remembering that any Government of national unity would be in 'power' for 4-6 weeks. They would be the Government during the election campaign so as well as an PM there is going to need to be a cabinate.

One would image this would be a slimmed down version, so many of the departments could be covered by 2-4 minsters without portfolio (or some sort of equivalent) and there are plenty of junior ministers on all sides who have cross party respect that could move into those roles.

But the big potions (Chancellor, home and foreign secretaries and defence secretaries) are going to have to be filled and the Conservatives/Lib Dems are never going to let them all be filled by Labour MPs.

So some labour noses are going to be put out of joint. Can't see Con/LD letting McDonnell anywhere the treasury and can't see Diane Abbot being let near anything. Can see them living with Thornberry and Starmar possibly even Watson, but not many others from the Labour front bench.

The flip side, of course, is that there is going to have to be at least one Conservative MP in this cabinet and that's going to be a hard sell for Labour to their supporters.

  7. Caroline Lucas would be the ideal candidate. She is the only Green MP, so anyone supporting her could not be accused on party bias.
Swinson lacks the intelligence to work in the public interest. She is too dim to think things through. I fear that many in Labour might be too, and that the entire idea of a Government of Unity is doomed to fail due to brainless tribalism (Labour) or brainless egomania (Liberals).

Unless Salmond is actually guilty and Sturgoen was involved that is, in which case she'd be on trial too. As she's not on trial, we can assume she's completely innocent, as if you are complicit in a crime / try to cover it up, the police charge you with that.

The biggest threat to Sturgeon is not doing absolutely everything in her power do deliver indy if brexit goes ahead.

She has positive ratings 12 years into government. They have even recently risen in the face of the Salmond allegations, probably in part due to the unionist media trying to link her to them. It's nothing short of miraculous.

And when a unionist paper say 'SNP sources said', they mean 'I wish I had solid insider SNP sources but I don't, so I just made things up'. It's that or they spoke to Jim Sillars.

  12. A government of national unity is a pipe dream. Those that would form it are not united. There is no external threat for them to unite against; the UK's problems are all internal.

The UK faces chaos; politically, economically and constitutionally. This will not stop until the UK breaks up.

There is no way out of it. We are at the culmination of a process which began at the peak of empire. It has been going on for decades, with each generation less British than the last as the empire's borders retreat and Britain's status in the world reduces. We are now in the final days of the collapse. The last day of Rome.

The net result will be a return to the pre-1707 status borders-wise as the original countries re-emerge from the ashes of empire.

Imagining the UK can stick together is like imagining the empire can be re-built. It's brexit fantasy.

Unfortunately, it's all going to be pretty messy up until the point the English realise that it would be easier just to let it go.

To reject him and select a lower grade replacement would be utter humiliation for Corbyn and infuriate a huge section of Labour members (and voters).

That said, there is a fair bit of posturing and optics involved as usual. I wonder if the LibDems realise that a hard BREXIT is coming and after it all goes belly-up, JS will step in and lead the campaign for the UK to rejoin the EU. Are the LbDems remainers, or cynical future returners? We shall find ot soon enough. Thanks to NS, the LibDem mask will drop, and their real intention will be revealed. Despite the posturing and virtue-signalling, the LibDems care little for anyone but themselves, so they may have decided secretly to let a hard BREXIT unfold and step in to take advantage later.

    1. If you want people in England to back English independence, then the Scots putting Corbyn in No 10 to delay/stop brexit is an excellent idea.

The likes of Johnson will only support holding the UK together as long as it's a vote winning. If support for English indy picks up pace, he'll jump on that bandwagon quick enough.

Regardless of how likely you would be to actually vote, if a General Election was held today, which party would receive your vote? Would it be the Conservatives, the Labour Party, the Liberal Democrats, the Brexit Party, an independent, or some other minor party?

Listening to Alex Double-Barrell this morning I was a bit surprised by his suggestion that a national unity government could run for many months perhaps not only overseeing an extension from the EU but also a second EU referendum. Apart from the complete implosion of the Mail readership heads and quite possibly some serious unpleasantness down south I can't see Labour MPs wearing it and without Labour it isn't going to happen. Of course I could be wrong and Labour do go for it but who would lead such an endeavour? Running the country for months or perhaps even a year would need policies, a budget and an agreed direction.

An extension and an election in November seems a lot more straight forward. The danger is that Boris might win comfortably in England, still crash us out the EU, and form the next 5 year government. Crunch time!

    10. Personally, I think Campbell is right about a lot of things, but wrong about lots too.

On the SNP 'stop brexit' issue, I think he completely misses the fact that we don't live in isolation. I imagine our 27+ neighbours have made it pretty damn clear that if the SNP aid the brexiters in their quest for a hard brexit, then the 27+ not be in rush to welcome Scotland into the EEA/EU.

If however Scotland does it best to stop a brexit mess, then in due course, it's independent EEA/EU membership will be looked on more favourably.

There is also the fact that if England says 'No Section 30', the very obvious response is to throw every spanner you can in the brexit works. 'You screw up our indy and we'll screw up yours'. That's how you get England wanting indy.

The latter approach is working a treat. English voters now think the UK breaking up is fine if it helps deliver brexit and likewise thing the Scots / N. Irish should be able to have referendums if they want them. This is quite a sea change.

  32. Jo Swinson would prefer to be a Tory deputy than a Labour deputy because she's a Tory, she has no interest in Brexit or what happens with it, she's a careerist opportunist and that doesn't involve caring about the actual people

Most of all Jo Swinson is a construct of herself with little political nouse dependent on others helping her to take the credit or deny the effects of other people's decisions

An inveterate liar and all round unpleasant person who claims more expences than any other Scottish politician, she's not lovingly referred to as the tooth floss claiment for nothing, she actually did claim for tooth floss, and tea spoons, I could list it but it'd take all day

  34. This would mean Irish people being stopped as they wend about their business and new infrastructure in N. Ireland, so it would breach the GFA.

    https://uk.reuters.com/article/uk-britain-eu-ireland/uk-proposes-customs-centres-on-both-sides-of-irish-border-rte-report-idUKKBN1WF25L

Customs facilities on the Irish or British (e.g. Cairnryan) side are fine as infrastructure already exists / checks are already made here, but inside N. Ireland breaches the GFA.

    1. Checks to stop criminal acts are not prohibited. When we leave the EU moving goods from the UK to ROI will be checked by the EU regime in breach of the Belfast Agreement.

    2. Customs/migration checks related to border crossings in N. Ireland are prohibited by the GFA.

Such checks can only continue to be made on the Irish or British sides of the N. Irish border.

Checks exiting the North are no problem. It's checks entering that are; a British problem.

  35. Boris doesn't need to deliver brexit, he just needs to crash the pound at just the right moment to massively enrich himself and mates.

    https://uk.reuters.com/article/us-britain-eu-sterling/brexit-sterling-bets-pose-no-conflict-for-uks-johnson-government-idUKKBN1WF1GZ

Brexit sterling bets pose no conflict for UK's Johnson: government

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain’s government on Monday dismissed opposition suggestions that Prime Minister Boris Johnson faces a financial conflict of interest over Brexit after receiving donations from fund managers who may be betting on a fall in the pound.

    1. I don't know. I don't follow as it's not relevant to whether Scotland becomes independent or not.

Unless you are now voting indy because Cyril Smith was a unionist, or turning against Brexit because of Bozo's wandering hands?

  37. The UK can leave with no deal, but all that means it has no deal with anyone until such time as the backstop is finally in place.

The EU will never sign a deal without the backstop and neither will the USA. As other countries all want deals (or to improve existing deals) with the EU/USA, none of these will sign a deal with the UK until the backstop is in place.

The English government simply needs to comply with the GFA and the will of the N. Irish people to remain in the EU, and all this will go away.

Apart from Scotland of course. They will keep throwing spanners in the works and if they stay in the UK, the only way to strike new trade deals will be to give them a veto on devolved areas or cancel devolution. Which ends the union...

We have years of this mess ahead. Decades of economic, social and constitutional crisis. Unless the UK breaks up. Then everyone gets what they want and are happy really quickly.

  38. The GFA clearly states no hard border infrastructure in N. Ireland, but what does the dumb ass uk propose? Stopping people en masse with a serious of hard border posts all along the N. Irish border.

The British have never honoured an agreement with any country ever that's why the EU don't trust them and said so

  39. I don't buy this LibDem excuse that "Corbyn doesn't have the numbers, because the Tory rebels won;t support him!" guff. What a lame excuse. If the LibDems supported Corbyn for a few days, just for the sake of avoiding a hard Brexit on October 31st, then the tory rebels would just have to abstain. Would they vote against the VNC and allow a NO DEAL? I don;t think so. However, it does seem that the LibDems are willing to sacrifice the country, despite their lame excuse for not supporting Corbyn as temp PM.

"He just doesn't have the numbers, Sweetie!"

Aye right - more lame LibDem guff. Untrustworthy fraudsters the lot of em.

He [Johnson] told BBC Radio 4's Today programme: "A sovereign united country must have a single customs territory."

    https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/49198825

The government is planning to create up to 10 free ports across the UK after Brexit.

They allow firms to import goods and then re-export them outside normal tax and customs rules.
