Alba's latest shambles descends into farce as Josh Robertson directly contradicts the "vote SNP in the constituencies" strategy set out by his party leader Kenny MacAskill only NINE DAYS AGO

On Monday, I blogged about the extraordinary confusion that had been thrown up by Tasmina Ahmed-Sheikh's angry denial that Alba will be asking people to vote SNP in the constituencies and Alba on the list in next year's Holyrood election.  That appeared to directly contradict Kenny MacAskill's repeated statements that Alba would be reverting to Alex Salmond's 2021 strategy, which was indeed to advise people to vote "SNP constituency, Alba list".  I wondered if perhaps we hadn't been given the whole picture, and whether this time Alba would be combining a list-only strategy with a destructive recommendation for a unionist/Reform vote in the constituencies, the latter of which is precisely what Alba's foul-mouthed spiritual godfather Stew Campbell is very unsubtly angling for at present.

However, a couple of people later pointed out to me that Kenny MacAskill had already addressed that point in an article for The National published on 21st April, just nine days ago -

"Ahead of the election, Alba will be building on the strategy our founder bequeathed us and which our conference overwhelmingly approved – contesting the list only while advising people to vote for other independence-supporting parties in the constituency. That will almost invariably be the SNP."

So that's extremely clear.  It's a slight adjustment from the 2021 strategy which called without caveat for an SNP constituency vote, and doubtless the Salmond Purists will be furious with MacAskill for mucking around with perfection by tinkering in even the smallest way with a tactic devised by an infallible strategic genius.  Nevertheless, it's a distinction without a difference, because as MacAskill himself spells out, Alba will be recommending an SNP constituency vote in almost all cases.  And for the avoidance of doubt, that would be a very sensible thing for them to do.

But, alas, the story doesn't end there, because John Cowie later challenged Josh Robertson (known to Alba members as "JoshBot 6000" for his boundless willingness to follow even the most squalid and morally dubious orders from the party leadership, and to do so in a soul-crushing monotone voice) on why Alba were reverting to urging an SNP constituency vote.  Extraordinarily, Josh followed Ahmed-Sheikh's example by flatly denying that Alba are doing that.

Mr Cowie then sent Josh the link to the article in which MacAskill says Alba will be "invariably" advising an SNP constituency vote, and Josh simply didn't reply, which is logical enough because any well-programmed bot (especially of the 6000 series) will temporarily shut down if it's given contradictory orders, and if there is no prime directive about which one should be given priority.

With the best will in the world, and leaving aside metaphysical questions about what "voting for independence on the constituency and regional ballot" is actually supposed to mean, there is simply no way of reconciling MacAskill's statement that Alba will be "almost invariably" advising a vote for the SNP in the constituencies, and Josh's statement that "I'm not asking you to vote SNP".  They are directly contradictory.  So what on earth is going on here?  Without having an inside source it's impossible to be sure, but my instinct is that Ahmed-Sheikh's anger issues are rearing their ugly head yet again.  She may well have flown off the handle when she saw how explicit MacAskill had been about the strategy in his article, and is perhaps now demanding that the strategy should be "re-framed" or "reimagined" for public consumption.

But whatever the explanation, we plainly do need some clarity about what the strategy actually is, as of this week.  Perhaps Slanszh Media could set aside a slot in the next episode of their little-watched YouTube show Tas Is Talking to put the matter beyond dispute.  And if it turns out that the definitive strategy falls somewhat short of what MacAskill announced in The National, it will essentially confirm what so many people have pointed out - that while MacAskill may nominally 'lead' the Alba party, Ahmed-Sheikh is the party's owner.

  2. I think Alba are trying to play both sides. They know there’s a segment of the electorate that’s fed up with the SNP (maybe even politics in general) but still supports independence. These are people who wouldn’t vote SNP again, and they’d resist any party or campaign telling them to go back to voting SNP.

At the same time, Alba are also trying to appeal to current SNP supporters by encouraging them to use their regional list vote tactically.

It’s a balancing act trying to be the alternative for those who’ve walked away from the SNP, while still persuading loyal SNP voters to lend their list vote.

    2. Imo, the only way Alba can really play both sides is by using a line like “Vote for a pro-indy party on the constituency ballot.”

SNP supporters will take that to mean “Vote SNP,” but because it’s not explicitly saying that, it avoids alienating the people who are done with the SNP but still support indy.

It’s a cop-out, but it’s probably the only way to frame it that appeals to both camps.

    1. There is an issue though — voter turnout in Scotland at the last General Election dropped significantly compared to 2019 (apparently it was the lowest turnout in a UK General Election in Scotland since 2001).

We’re also seeing a consistent gap in the polling between support for independence and support for the SNP.

Alba might not be the answer, but they are a symptom of a wider problem the movement hasn’t resolved. A number of Yes voters no longer feel politically represented, and pretending that frustration doesn’t exist is only going to push more people away.

The removal was ordered by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's office as part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to purge DEI-related content from federal agencies and educational institutions.

Besides Angelou's memoir, other books removed included those on the Holocaust, histories of feminism, civil rights, and racism.

  27. Interesting article in the National - "Meet the women running Glasgow's newest LGBT+ business" - https://archive.is/e3PjU

but this from one of the founders could have been better phrased, perhaps a little thoughtless:

"... because unfortunately there is quite a lot of transphobia within the lesbian community"

perhaps as this instead: "because unfortunately there is quite a lot of discomfort and apprehension within the lesbian community about mixing with trans women"

Use of any word "....phobia" is a criticism of a person and others them - the very thing which the suffix "phobia" implies should be avoided.

She then goes on to say "I want to make it really clear that we are inclusive of trans women", but perhaps she could make it clear they also welcome lesbians who are wary of transgender women and understand their worries. Not all lesbians or gays are confident in themselves - same as trans, and those who don't know yet where they are.

    https://archive.is/ryXpe

This is a very good but sad article by Ian McConnell in the Herald.

There was a time when it looked to me that the Bank of Scotland might be able to break free of Halifax / Lloyds, but it wasn't to be. A bit less chance of the RBS which seems now to be totally absorbed.

Clydesdale ==> NAB ==> NAG ==> VM ==> Nationwide gone forever I think. So what happens for Independent Scotland - new bank? And what about the Scottish banknotes, which was £4 billion covered 100% by giants and titans? Will they soon disappear?

"At end-February 2024, the authorised banks in Scotland had an aggregate backing requirement of £5.37 billion, comprising £5.13 billion of Notes in Circulation and £0.24 billion of Notes With the Potential to Enter Circulation (as defined in paragraph 11)."

And of course all figures are part of a social construct that can be altered at the whim of the money men. The mythical free market is part of the same system. Designed to protect the rich. It works well.

      Delete
    4. It's not actually meaningless at all. Currently the 3 note-issuing commercial banks in Scotland cover all the banknotes with a deposit in the Bank of England to cover the lot - so there's a total of £5.37 billion Sterling (GBP) deposited in the Bank of England. It's effectively 100% prudential banking, at least as far as banknotes are concerned.

With Independence to cover the Scottish notes, the commercial banks would need to transfer that to the Central bank of Scotland - which then becomes part of the reserves (if they continue to issue Scottish banknotes). Over £5 billion is not to be sneezed at.

For the whole UK the BoE has currently £141 billion as foreign reserves - that would pro rata be just £12 billion for Scotland.
