Scott McTominay, in spite of his stellar year, was inexplicably excluded from the shortlist for BBC Sports Personality of the Year. Meanwhile the Team of the Year award had a shortlist of three, of which farcically two were teams called "England" - and this in a year when Scotland had won the Men's World Curling Championship. The BBC's use of the annual awards ceremony to push the ideology of Greater England nationalism is not exactly subtle. In the video below, I make a modest proposal for reform of the shortlisting procedure that would guarantee fair Scottish representation - but that of course is not an outcome the BBC are likely to regard as remotely desirable.
Another reason not to pay the colonial broadcaster
ReplyDeleteI remember at the Olympics a few years ago the odious Clare Balding humiliating Rhona Martin, the skip of the curling team, and making her apologise for calling it the "Scottish Team", then lecturing her that they was representing "Britain". It was disgraceful and, sadly, Rhona apologised. Haven't been able to stomach Balding's on-screen caring persona.
ReplyDeleteIronically Balding seemed similarly unaware that there *was* a Scottish team at Glasgow 2014. She seemed utterly convinced that Scottish athletes were instead competing for a team called "the Home Nations".
DeleteYes, she's the perfect BBC person. Her employer must adore her.
DeleteIn fairness a full 5 minutes on the bbc “National” News was all about Australia’s cricketers or rather 5 mins of England’s not playing to their full potential as a team. I think they are getting beat.
ReplyDeleteHaven't watched it in years. Complete waste of time unless you are interested in English sport
