Independence for Scotland within the context of a globalized UK is near impossible. Rory knows this and is not afraid to argue it publically. All the insults that are posted on this blog reveal Scottish nationalism to be narrow, bitter and quite sad.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-930120922627919768.post-16055678269484231382014-04-25T16:21:20.736+01:002014-04-25T16:21:20.736+01:00Don't forget that Rory Stewart compared himsel...Don't forget that Rory Stewart compared himself with Lawrence of Arabia, and very recently referred to himself as a superhero! So bear with his musings in his constituency where those voting for a candidate in 2010 were not given the voting numbers as the others left one by one. There was no independent scrutineer, and most of those standing (allegedly chosen by Conservative Head Office)were quite dire! Bracknell people were sensible enough not to choose him as the Conservative candidate, whereas many of those voting in this very safe seat will vote for anything in a blue rosette, even a donkey or even Rory Stewart!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-930120922627919768.post-43611296513097984322014-04-25T14:44:19.547+01:002014-04-25T14:44:19.547+01:00My theory is that he wants all those people to joi...My theory is that he wants all those people to join hands to keep the Scots, including his parents, out of England. And what is this thing about his being half Scottish and half English; he was born in Hong Kong of Scottish parents. His dreams include his still being introduced as an army officer - how many weeks did he last as an officer cadet? Unfortunately he will do anything to promote himself, and regularly jumps on others' bandwagons - OBE stands for Other Buggers' Efforts! Unfortunately my MP appears to have a lot of time on his hands, using his constituents as yet another short-term notch on his CV - as we thought. Hopefully he won't stand again in 2015, so we can get a totally committed. Off to Gretna for some shopping while they still take the pound!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-930120922627919768.post-17098660816671463882014-04-24T23:23:34.812+01:002014-04-24T23:23:34.812+01:00Bloody Romans :-)

Topography combined with lights from towns/cities at night.

http://alteryxned.files.wordpress.com/2013/09/ukatnight.png

The central belt 'connects' all the way up the east coast to Inverness and beyond; communities overlap. Only the NW Highlands and Islands are more 'isolated', hence have always been something of their own lands.

Scotland is not connected to England in the same way at all, it is geographically isolated from it.

Only ~0.5% of the population regularly cross the border. Not because it is 'a border', simply because it's a long trip, even if you are just going from e.g. Edinburgh to Newcastle. That's with modern road and rail too.

Of course once you get to Newcastle (or Preston), then the land starts to open up all the way to the SE of England and these are 'connected'; apart from West of the Welsh Mountains (home of Plaid) and Cornwall to an extent.

Basic human geography. Somehow he couldn't resist overegging the pudding - if he'd just been talking about the links between the Borders and Northumberland he'd have had a much better point (although that would scarcely have been a strong enough argument against independence).James Kellyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01516007141763230886noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-930120922627919768.post-73998039773327096782014-04-24T15:58:28.046+01:002014-04-24T15:58:28.046+01:00He wouldn't be talking about the Kingdom of No...He wouldn't be talking about the Kingdom of Northumbria and Mercia, would he?

That would be roughly equivilent to the bits of England that get the least spending from Westminster?

Oh , he is? I heard that his Hands across the Border jaunt has had no Facebook activity for over two months, so it looks as though he's going to fall short of his aim of gathering 100,000 hobbits or elves, wreathed in union jacks, to frolic with him in July on Hadrian's Wall. Some serious questions need to be asked of the BBC, spending our money on this twaddle. What documentary will they commission next? Maria Miller telling us how the Great Barrier Reef is actually composed of chocolate buttons?Iainnoreply@blogger.com
