The "Liberate Scotland" alliance continues to both disintegrate and drift to the far-right - and Barrhead Boy's autocratic leadership looks to be the culprit

The Independence For Scotland party, which until today was one of the three component parts of the Liberate Scotland alliance along with the far-right Sovereignty and "Independents for Independence", has never been noted for being a particularly mainstream organisation or for being in touch with the concerns of the general public.  It's been utterly obsessed, for example, with the tedious and unimportant issue of oaths of allegiance to the monarchy.  So it would be tempting to characterise their decision to abandon Liberate in much the same way I characterised Allan Petrie's identical decision a couple of days ago, ie. "we can excuse fascism but we draw the line at sharing an alliance with people who do not agree with our views about gender recognition certificates".

But that would perhaps be unfair, because they've actually given specific reasons which are maybe a bit more reasonable.  They've pointed out that until recently Liberate was an equal alliance of three parties/groupings, but was then forced to register as a party in its own right because of a ruling from the Electoral Commission.  It appears that the leadership of the new party then exploited that situation to bypass their partners when making important decisions, such as allowing Tommy Sheridan and Craig Murray to stand under the Liberate banner.  And judging from what Petrie said the other day, that leadership consists basically of the notoriously volatile and short-fused blogger Barrhead Boy, and the maverick former MP for Coatbridge, Phil Boswell (even though ironically neither are among the three officially registered party officers).  That ties in with everything I heard about Liberate in its early days - the message was overwhelmingly that Barrhead Boy was the de facto autocrat of the alliance in much the same way that Tasmina Ahmed-Sheikh was the de facto autocrat of Alba.

So Liberate is now disintegrating for much the same reason that Alba began to disintegrate in late 2023.  However, the situation is even worse for Liberate, because however malevolent Tasmina was, she did at least have credibility as a seasoned politician and lawyer.  Barrhead Boy setting himself up as the dictator of a "national liberation movement" is faintly comical in comparison, and calls to mind the old saying about history repeating itself as farce.

The other significance of today's development, of course, is that it by definition moves the centre-of-gravity within Liberate even further to the nativist far-right - assuming Sovereignty are remaining inside the tent, that is.

  1. No wonder Wings-Campbell and others of his ilk like Netantahu and deny the Gaza Genocide.

    All fascists together.

  2. Isn’t Peter A Bell the undisputed Leader of the true Scottish national liberation movement?

    1. I doubt if Bell would even agree to serve as Minister for Diplomacy in a Barrhead Boy-led government. He'd insist on dissolving the usurpers and then liberating Scotland "properly".

Oh that's too good. The Alliance to Liberate Scotland (headquarters: Barcelona)

    6. Marcia mentioned it in her post the other day. I think it was a party set up to pursue the interests of taxi drivers.

  4. They're a charming bunch - not. I thought Lesley Riddoch, Joanna Cherry and Fergus Ewing were tight with them and were part of the under the radar leadership - but that was maybe one of their drunk middle-class boffins 4 sheets to the wind but just as crude and shouty with the aggressive tone. Phil Boswell - we need to terminate the current leadership of the SNP and let them wander the hills like Kenny MacAskill is! They're awfy feart of the Scottish Greens - and you have to laugh at them accusing the greens of 'creating a schism in the UNITED movement for independence'! The 'National' is apparently the 'in-house comic of the Sturgeon cult'. Maybe they're always just coked up to the hilt - because if anybody gives the impression of being a cult, they do. And Eva - the SNP don't reflect the opinion of the WHOLE yes movement; the SNP leadership are not currently supporters of independence - blah blah. And Phil Boswell doing his acting role-plays with 'Most people I know still think the SNP believe in independence'. Bunch of wind-up actors of the let's have a laugh and create hysteria and see how much dosh we can rake in by being as OTT as we can sound. But hey - William Wallace, Robert the Bruce, Alex Salmond - repetition of Corri Wilson and her having to go out there and do the Braveheart thing. Hostage politics distractions.

  6. Think Craig Murray was a bit up himself when he said that there were three people in 2014 who spoke to more people than anybody else - and those three were Tommy Sheridan, Robin McAlpine and - Craig Murray. Think there are a few folk out there who might disagree with that boast.

  7. Smoke and mirrors. Doesn't sound as if it's about anything other than Salmond.

  8. Didn’t Salmond agree with Cameron as to process in 2014? Also everybody is taking credit for setting up ALBA in the video yet it is not accurate.

  9. I wasn't going to vote for any of these diddies anyway. But the SNP's not getting it either with this self-destructive "65 SNP seats or we're doing hee haw" strategy either. If there's no one worth voting *for* in May, I won't vote for any of them. And if that’s the case, I expect I'll be far from alone again.

There were a half million of us who didn’t turn out for Swinney in 2024. What are the polls saying about turnout now?

    1. That "half a million" thing is a myth, as I've pointed out many times before.

  10. I've often wondered how Barrhead Boy (BB) squares living in a country that has self id for trans people with his persistent warnings that self id is itself a danger to women. If I believed that my country of residence had become a danger to women, I'd almost certainly leave. How could I stay somewhere that isn't safe for my partner, my mother, my daughters, my sisters or my female work colleagues and friends?

Somehow, BB manages to stay in a country that has self id, while campaigning to stop self id in another country on the basis that it is a danger to women. It makes no sense at all. Either he believes that self id in Spain is not a danger to women or he believes it is but he doesn't
sufficiently care about it to reduce the risk to the women in his life by moving elsewhere. There are plenty of countries that are very unlikely to adopt self id so it is not the case that there is no choice. If he wants some sun, then Italy might be a contender.

I find it even more bizarre that he spends 3-4 months each year in UAE, if womens' rights are his top priority. The asymmetry in rights regarding divorce and travel in UAE are quite shocking.

There's something of the pound-shop Richard Tice about BB. Both choose to live in the sun while attempting to influence politics in a less sunnier clime. In doing so, they ignore the political issues (and their consequences) where they actually live. The difference is that Tice is more successful at achieving his goals because he is politically more shrewd and has deeper pockets.

btw we know the maximum available share of the anti-trans, pro-indy vote. Alba achieved it already. It is 1.66% and that was with Salmond at the helm. I'm no Salmond fan but he was a smart politician with enviable recognition. I cannot say the same for BB. The way he manages to fall out with everybody and the speed he manages to do that is not the mark of a shrewd political actor.

Does he really? We may have to start calling him Dubai Boy.
