Labour's wizard plan for avoiding Hard Brexit is to call it something else

In her speech today, Theresa May announced the following -

* The UK will leave the Single Market.

* The UK will leave the Customs Union (giving us a lesser status than Turkey).

* The jurisdiction of the European Court of Justice will no longer extend to the UK.

* The UK will not retain "partial membership" of the European Union.

* The UK will not accept anything that leaves it "half in, half out".

* The UK will not seek to "adopt a model already enjoyed by other countries" (ie. the Norway or Swiss models that are synonymous with a soft Brexit).

* The UK will not seek to retain "bits of EU membership" after Brexit.

Labour's mind-boggling response to that manifesto was "it is good that she has ruled that hard Brexit out at this stage". Which begs the obvious question - what exactly would qualify as hard Brexit in Labour's eyes? What would make them acknowledge that this is a plan that needs to be fought, rather than embraced or finessed? I'm beginning to think only a foreign policy akin to that of North Sentinel Island (breaking off all contact with the outside world and throwing spears at any boat or plane that approaches) would do the trick.

    5. Oh, for pity's sake, you asked me what the state of the polls was, so not unreasonably I directed you to the most recent one.

On the subject of crowdfunding a poll, I can only repeat what I said to you the last time you asked me to do that -

"Every time I've run a fundraiser, I've always said that if there are significant excess funds by the end of it, I would consider using that money to commission a poll. All of the fundraisers so far have met their target, but they haven't exceeded the target by enough to make the idea of a poll realistic.

The money from the most recent fundraiser (the 2015 one) has completely run out now, so that's why I've been re-promoting it over the last couple of weeks in case anyone wants to make an additional donation. Over that period, more than £500 has been raised, which I'm incredibly grateful for, but obviously that kind of money will only stretch so far, and I'm using it for its primary purpose. In the unlikely event that there's an enormous influx of donations at some point, I'm still open to the idea of a poll. But I wouldn't hold your breath - we've got to be realistic about what crowdfunding can achieve. Stuart Campbell has raised enough for a few polls, but he has a significantly bigger readership."

  3. The usual tory twits are heaping praise on May's weakness and capitulation to the Bill Cash/kipper wing of her party with almost as much brittle and desperate enthusiasm as they displayed for Cameron when he announced the calamitous EU referendum itself.

Save for the times when Cameron flounced in the EU or announced his other 'brave' stances against the EU on renegotiation. That was pretty much 'peak twit' as well.

They are incapable of learning a thing.

All we continue to hear is immigration controls, immigration controls, immigration controls which was simply a duplicitous tactic used to secure the exit vote by unscrupulous Tory politicians.
The Tories real intent was never much to do with immigration but their desire to turn the UK into a banana state free from regulation, human rights, living wages and anything else which "hinders" business.
My fellow Scots, that is where we are going.

The trading world goes beyond what is called the EU. We can get rid of useless politicians and their gravy train. Trade can be done with individual countries as has happened over centuries. We do not need an elite dictatorial body who just need to be obeyed. This EU will collapse the only annoying thing is the bastards have set up their own inflated pension rights. Paid for by the working class.

Brexit 'will put 75% of workers at risk of pension shortfall'

People will have to save more for pensions to have income they were on course for before Britain voted out, say City experts

      Delete
    4. The benefits of leaving the EU are that we make our own laws, control our own borders and can cut deals with nations all over the world - bilateral agreements that can be signed in months, not years or decades. We will still trade with the EU but under WTO rules until a free trade deal can be struck with them. That means an EU product on a British shelf that used to cost 10 pounds might cost 11 pounds instead, for a few years - and the same over there in relation to our products. Big deal. We get our country back and the chance to genuinely turn this place into boomtown as it becomes a global trading hub. The only people with a gripe over this are separatists and politically correct morons.

Actually it is. A 10% price hike is an absolute killer. Some people will still go with the product, but some will not. And where products are comparable, consumers will pocket the 10% by going with the alternative. In many service branches (like branches) this could see British institutions priced out of the market, before we even talk about additional permit costs to take part in EU markets.

Conservative M.P. Ms Morgan warned that the Government could not simply ignore its promises to the electorate.

“The Conservative party manifesto, on which we were elected only 17 months ago, has a very clear statement in it about ‘we say yes to the single market’ and it talks about ‘we will safeguard British interests in the single market’,” she told Sky News.

I think that post was cited not because you had made another stupid prediction, but because you're suddenly claiming to believe that Brexit is great news, when prior to this you supported a Remain result because it would "strengthen the UK union".

      Delete
    13. I supported remain for a while and then switched my position to leave - which I voted for - after the pro remain parties lost the argument so badly and after a convincing case was put to me that Scottish Nationalism would be weakened by brexit in the longer term. Oh I'm sure a remain vote would have shut the SNP up for a short while but other 'triggers' would have been identified before long and we'd be back to square one. Now we have new, large and strong barriers to an independent Scotland as a result of Brexit - and the SNP backed into a corner, under pressure to fight a war they aren't ready for. As a unionist, I'm content with the situation.

Why? She is quite clearly as weak and craven as Cameron and Major were.

Utterly terrified of the rump of hard-right Brexiteers and out and out kippers inside the tory party that could force an election and her out of a job.

Remember, May hasn't even been elected leader by the tory party's own members, never mind the electorate at large.

She doesn't have a mandate for anything since the farcical backstabbing joke of 'last idiot standing' that was the tory leadership contest doesn't really constitute as meaningful exercise in democratic consent.

The kippers and Farage now basically control the tory party and it's every move. What used to be laughable kipper dogma is now official conservative party policy.

Farage didn't even need to win a seat of his own to do it.

He just needed a succession of weak and out of touch tory leaders and the kind of supine career politicians who enabled them and their calamitous stupidity.

That is not true. The Scottish parliament can call a further referendum if the people vote for a party that wants to reverse previous Nat si stupidity.
