Crunch time for Nicola Sturgeon: she must hold firm and maintain the Scottish lockdown in full. Saving thousands of lives is far more important than staying in lockstep with Westminster as it loses its mind on 'Magic Monday'.

  1. The 5 step plan has nothing to do with ending this or saving lives. It doesn't even account for burn out in those in the care sector eroding the capacity even assuming no further deaths. The plan is and always has been to allow the virus to infect as many as possible without people dying due to not enough ventilators.

A plan that was meant to take only 12 weeks to achieve "herd immunity" so that all those vulnerable could venture out in public again. A plan that's already failed in care homes. Something that works in cases where there's induced immunity through vaccination being applied to an entirely new disease with no vaccine. And something they intend to continue with no clue as to how far it's spread so far.

This government has a fucking cheek to try to latch on to VE day when they're approach to Covid is the equivalent of capitulation and when other countries have demonstrably got on top of it and pushed it back in the sea.

  2. In Spain, which is way ahead of the UK in flattening the curve (as the graph in Jo Michell's tweet above shows) and which has had a stricter lockdown, the restrictions are being eased very cautiously and to a different time scale according to geographical locations. It's obvious the same kind of plan should work for the UK. However, that would mean the UK government actually having to show respect for the devolved administrations. And we all know how unlikely that is to happen.

  3. Who would ever have believed that the political watershed could become sensible public health on one side vs. death cult jingoism on the other?
British right wing populism long ago understood that the thin, 'liberal' lid that had been kept on racism and xenophobia for a few decades was holding it back. They're mostly not quite proud racists yet but they dog whistle to it as a matter of course now.

Ignorant, 'Britain won World War Two', jingoism is the second horseman of their growing apocalypse.
Maybe they should make the great sacrifice, grind a 'sacred Spitfire' into powder and we could all swallow a little with water to defeat 'Johnny Covid'.
After all we have the great British traditions of the Charge of the Light Brigade and the first day on the Somme to inspire us.

The Scottish Government must do every last thing that it can to oppose these union lemmings ( a bit unfair on lemmings actually) and we must all support their efforts. Who knows where that might lead......?

    3. Totally agree these lowlife Britnats 'oh what a lovely war'
gits utterly disrespect the people who lived through ( or died because of it) WW2 and suffered horrendous poverty, and grief just for starters.

The jumped up little Britnats dining out on VE day this year are utterly despicable.

Certainly as with many, my parents were children during WW2,
they lost parents who were interred for years in POW camps,
who came back to nothing, rejected by family. My grandfather suffered terrible PDSD and hardly spoke after had seen the death and destruction as a soldier in WW2.

It was a terrible time, my father embraced the EU with open arms knowing at least the Britnats would be held to account much more than if they were attached to a 'little America'.
He would be horrified now to know that is exactly what is happening. Little Britain, a 'little America'

      Terrifying.

I am sure the job that Nicola Sturgeon has now on top of dealing with these Britnats at No.10 is taking it's toll. She needs to take time out and delegate, I hope she does.

Keeping the lockdown in Scotland is crucial and in no way should we be bullied into anything but keeping it in place for as long as is needed for the safety of the people of Scotland.

Can anyone imagine what the situation would be like in Scotland if the Labour ENGUK branch were at the helm at Holyrood? Going on their record in their TEN years at Holyrood, it would be absolute and utter chaos, and that it how they would like it to be now, CHAOTIC. They are disgrace to Scotland and humanity really.

      Very convenient for some.

Unknown: I'm not quite sure what it is you want me to say. I said only yesterday that I had great concerns about what I'd heard about the sequence of events that led to Mr Salmond's trial. You can't realistically expect me to go much further than that - it's not my place to make allegations against named individuals, and it wouldn't do anyone any good if I did.

    4. Couldn't those accounts have been shut down because Stuart Campbell is an abusive foul mouthed objectionable person found to have been not as accurate in his statements as he'd like folk to believe

Perhaps if Former FM Salmond had something to say he would, I can't imagine he needs a mutt like Campbell to speak for him, so it's about time the former FM either condemned Campbell or supported him, or maybe he's already condemned Campbell by lodging a complaint with Twitter to shut the numpty up to stop him pumping out garbage and using Mr Salmonds name to do it

In the end does anybody really care because Alex won't be coming back in the way the conspirators hope he will to lead them to glory, the press would howl with laughter on the front pages of every paper if this was the best Scotland could do was to bring back the guy who failed the last time because he somehow weirdly couldn't get the better of a mindless chump like Alistair Darling or Gordon Brown? Good point and of course his transgender mantra is that it's Nicola Sturgeon and the SNP to blame. Has it not dawned on people yet that Stu Campbell is just conning people? His allegiance changed some time ago. It's clear now that he's just another wee BritNat living in Bath, England who's determined to destroy the independence movement. 7. Some restrictions need to be eased where there is no scientific basis for keeping them in place. Allow people in cities without gardens to sit in a park to read, sun bathe, have a picnic, bird watch, allow the kids play, all has been taken place Glasgow now for weeks already, and police are largely ignoring people doing it, so makes no sense to keep this restrictions going.

Allow people outside more than once a day, and for duration and activity of there choice within reason, i.e. no team sports etc. Open up public parks that have had there car parks closed, makes no sense for example in Anniesland hearding people along narrow canal path close to there homes where social distancing is all but impossible, but it's the only outdoor space available to them, where there is wide open space often 15 mins drive away, such as the kilpatrick hills and mugdock park.

Just a more common sense approach, don't treat people like criminals for just wanting to get out and improve there mental well being, that's the first approach the government should take, and it should be put in place today.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. The reason all of that is a terrible idea is not because outdoor transmission is the biggest problem, but because it hopelessly undermines the 'stay at home' message that is so vital to making a lockdown effective. I've no particular problem with the police turning a blind eye to behaviour that is probably relatively harmless, but a blind eye is how it has to work, because as soon as you lift the 'stay at home' messaging you'll have an anything goes funfair and it'll be impossible to prevent different households from mingling with each other.

  9. and if by magic thats exactly what the FM has just said: Changes to exercise rule of once a day being considered The only change the first minister will reconsider in the near future and that is a change to the guidance limiting outdoor exercise to once only. She says the government is already considering this, on the strict conditions you remain in your household group, 2m away from others and stay reasonably close to your own home. Ms Sturgeon says she will report back on this in the next few days, but the once a day rule remains in place for now.

    1. She said the exact same thing at Tuesday's press conference when she realeased the latest update of the framework for decison making.

It is section A of that document so is not new.

"In line with current evidence that outdoor activity poses less risk of transmission of the virus than indoor activity, we are considering if and how we could make changes to allow people to leave their home more often and/or for longer.

This would still involve staying in their local area, staying within their own household group (or any extension of this that may be permitted in future), maintaining physical distancing from those not part of their own household, and maintaining good hygiene at all times.

We will also consider whether the evidence supports any changes to the restrictions on certain outdoor work activities, provided that associated safe working practices are in place."

You're making the schoolboy error of not knowing which Scottish government you're talking about, there are two, there's the representatives you vote for who try to carry out the policies you elect them on and there's the other Scottish government who implement policy and those people don't work for the Scottish government as most people understand it, those people answer to the UK government and the Scottish government but are selected in their employment by the UK government and the Scotland office

Throwing around accusations using another persons name as backup seems odd when the principal person Alex Salmond has said nothing

  11. Just compare this shitshaw that's happening now in the UK with how the whole thing's been done in other countries. Italy, France, Spain, Germany, Norway, Ireland (insert any other European country here) - clear messaging. new rules known weeks ahead before they happen, test, trace and isolate strategy in place and being followed.
UK - total confusion, briefings from No10 to select tabloids, right-wing tabloids cheering for the lockdown to end, no-one knows what (if any) regulations there will be when the lockdown's loosened, people won't know on Sunday whether they'll be called to work on Monday (workers have been sent texts this week that they have to be on stand-by as they might be called back to work on Monday), by far the highest daily number of new cases in Europe, by far the highest daily death toll in Europe, testing's happening just for the sake of testing, no tracing and isolating being done at all.
Just think that what's happening in Norway and Denmark now could have been Scotland were we not chained to Westminster. Our lockdown could have already been eased to the point where it would've allowed us to lead relatively normal lives if we'd been able to actually follow proper science form the beginning like other countries and not Cummings' sort of science.

  12. The number of new cases each week per 100,000 population would seem to be a useful guage of how safe it is to start relaxing some measures of lockdown restrictions.

Angela Merkel has included a "brake" in her easing of the lockdown, it is being done on a regional basis as you would expect but if in any locality the new cases per week exceed 50 per 100,000 population then that locality will once again put put into strict lockdown.

Now have a look at the linear graphs for Germany, Italy, Spain, France and compare for where the UK is currently with numbers of new cases. It is clear the UK is not yet ready and in fact looks to have a good way to go before safely easing restrictions.

Have a play around on this graph with any countries you like for comparisons.

    1. Interesting graph. But everyone please note that the vertical scale is logarithmic, so apparently-small differences between curves can indicate large actual numerical differences, not least in the upper regions.

    2. Sorry, the default is power, not log. But similar applies. You can select linear instead, though. Cool.

(Check out Brazil for really how not to go about it!)

      Delete
    3. Glad you noticed the user can change the scale, the main thing for me is where the likes of Germany and Spain are in new cases per day before even attempting to relax the lockdown.

If the UK got to around 1000 new cases a day then maybe there might be some justification provided you have other supressing measures such as track and trace up and running/

While it's running at 6000/day and has barely dropped in weeks would not be a good time and no relaxation of the lockdown that is of any substance will be happening anytime soon is my opinion.

Even Dominic Cummings can read a graph!

    4. Definately advise using a linear scale when comparing large EU countries.

    5. Agreed.

As an interesting excursion, do everyone try selecting Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland (while removeing all the originals). See what difference a policy really can make.
