"As usual, England talking over Scotland"

Earlier tonight I appeared on the Al Jazeera show The Stream to talk about the potential for Brexit to lead to the break-up of the UK.  The other guests were the station's correspondent Laurence Lee, and the former Brexit Party MEP Alexandra Phillips.  I think I made the mistake of being a bit too gentlemanly - I allowed Alexandra Phillips to speak more or less uninterrupted, but she certainly didn't do the same with me.  At one point, the host said "as usual, England talking over Scotland".  However, I got in most of the points I wanted to make, after a bit of a struggle.  You can watch the programme HERE.

95 comments:

  1. You were spot on about her talking over you. Bloody ignorant Britnats do it all the time. The only difference this time is the host was not talking over you as well and tried to give you a fair shout.

Sometimes on Britnat poltical shows it is 5 Britnats against 1 for independence. The shows host is always a Britnat on Britnat TV.
They think Scotland is their possession. That sums up the Britnat point of view. Colonialism.

    1. Sometimes, but not always, it's worth letting the boots talk over you. Sit back and let the wider public see how polite, long-suffering people have to put up with boorishness
You could have torn up the speech, like Nancy Pelosi, and list any claim to dignity and civility.
      Great restraint.

Bewildering that anybody would defend a budding FM sending those text messages to a sixteen-year-old. It's got nothing to do with his sexual preferences. It would be just as politically suicidal, and also just plain wrong, for a budding FM to send those messages to a sixteen-year-old girl.

There's standing up for your side, and there's a Trump cult-like madness where you defend your side *no matter what they've done*. Haven't seen so many daft comments from Yessers in years.

The SNP and Yes movement dodged a bullet here. Imagine this creep had been FM when the next indy vote came around.

    1. For what it's worth, I don't think he would have been the next First Minister. He's more like a John Swinney - a natural deputy leader or Finance Minister, but not a natural leader. I would imagine Humza Yousaf is the heir apparent if the vacancy occurs in the long term, but if it happens sooner it would be more of a dilemma. One or two of the best choices are either in the wrong parliament, or not in any parliament at all.

Neither do I, but by all accounts he himself had those ambitions. Plus he was in an important enough position as it was. Anybody in that job who decides to send those messages to someone that young clearly has *major* problems with his judgement. I'm glad he's gone.

    4. While Mackay undoubtedly finishes ahead of most of the pack in this month's Ross Thomson award, I really wish people would stop insulting me by saying I was some sort of immature little child at 16.

They may have been this themselves, but I was a man, in every conceivable respect, and one more mature and brave than England's cowardly chickensite of a PM.

So, folks, if you were a late developer that's fine, but don't insult others by imply they are / were, including the young gent in question.

      Delete
    5. Why is there an Ross Thompson award? I can't see why there would be or why Mackay would finish ahead in it? They have nothing in common apart from both being gay.

      Delete
    6. Mackay didn't finish top of the pack. You pick up extra points for groping, but flirty texts are mainly just seen as lame.

      Delete
    7. Nope still don't get it. I heard some allegations in the news a last year that Thompson grouped someone, but seen no actual evidence that this happened, nor apparently have the police since there were no charges made. Of course even if there were Thompson would be innocent until proven guilty.

So still not sure why there would be a Ross Thompson award?

      Delete
    8. Ross Thomson award is for cases where the police deem no crime has been committed.

      Delete
    9. Cool, glad you agree that there is no evidence that Thompson groped anyone. If there was, of course, the police would of deemed that a crime had been committed (there is no situation were groping is not illegal unless both parties say that the act was consensual).

      Delete
    10. Sure, it's the same for Mackay. Police say no there's no evidence of wrongdoing and nor have any complaints have been made.

As per Ross Thomson, the story is just a bit embarrassing for respective political parties.

Another slow news day in the indy debate.

    11. It did surprise me how many unionists were apparently late developers though, having seen themselves as wee 'boys' / children (presumably still going through puberty) at 16. I was a fully grown man at that age, both biologically and socially.

      Still, explains e.g. the PM's child-like behaviour over iref2!

    12. I second Scottish Skier's motion. As a dyed-in-the wool, self-confessed "bum boy", as GWC would have it, I can tell you that at 16 I would have been over the moon to receive flirtatious and salacious messages from practically anyone male, what with the state my hormones were in. My parents - maybe not so much.As for most of my classmates - probably abuse and bullying if I'd come out of the closet.

Of course, back then in the dark ages, sex between men was a criminal offence in Scotland, a bit like Uganda today, or Russia. I am pleased to report that today's young Scots often find that difficult to believe, and very strange, that Scotland was ever like that.

    13. There was a gay guy at the hotel I worked at. Must have been late 40's. He flirted like mad with us young lads, knowing fine well our preferences for the female sex. Nobody was remotely offended; it was a running joke and everyone liked working with him because he was good fun (and worked hard). I spent my time chasing the French waitresses here to learn English, some of which were 10 years my senior. I was no wallflower certainly.

      Delete
    14. Like, it wasn't just flirty text messages. He kept offering the boy inducements to meet up, quite possibly alone: dinner, a job delivering leaflets, the chance to meet rugby heroes, a trip round parliament, his train fare paid here and there. He asks for his posts to be kept secret more than once. He obviously scanned the 16 year old's instagram, worked out he liked rugby, and kept using rugby to bring him back into the conversation when he wasn't for coming back.
This is a schoolboy he had never met in real life. Let's not pretend we don't know what this was.

btw Skier your posts really have gone downhill lately. This latest 'I was a mad shagger at 16, you must not have been a real man' is fucking cringey.

  6. Interesting that it takes Al Jazeera to organise a programme with voices from all the 4 'nations' of the UK. When do we ever see that on the BBC?

And great to see Scottish representation on an international politics show. In fact talking up for all the Celtic nations.

Interesting to see how the Brexit lady shows characteristic ignorance of Scotland yet is sure she is right. Nice to see the lesson on Danish geography. She has no answer to that. :-)

Nice to see the border in the Irish Sea mentioned - again, rarely aired on British TV. The idea that that is the beginning of the end of the UK has turned out to be the most resilient of points in public debate, to which there is almost never an answer from the British nationalist side.

And did I hear "British nationalist" make it on to the airwaves? Another one not so often heard on British state media. But becoming normalised via Al Jazeera ;-)

  12. MacKay has been incredibly foolish. It is Andrew Griffiths all over again. While May reinstated Griffiths to the party because she needed his vote I am not sure the same will happen here. Griffiths stepped down in Dec 19. I think it likely Derek will do likewise in May 21. He may do so before then but as he hadn't, as far as I am aware, broken any law I doubt there is a mechanism to force that.

Very disappointed MacKay did this. It is a stupid distraction at a pivotal period in our political history. That said I don't get all this heir apparent stuff. There are several SNP politicians I would rate ahead of MacKay in leadership qualities. Also, I was pleasantly impressed by Kate Forbes. Nicola and Kate looked very modern and businesslike together. One of the advantages of being a successful party is that we have attracted some genuine talent into the ranks. Scotland, independence and the SNP is about a lot more than one politician past or present. In fact, that is true for all political parties. Individuals crash and burn and are quickly forgotten because dealing with the business of the day rightly takes precedent.

It's why I can freely call England a cowardly, chickenshit country that's too scared to stand on its own too feet, and nobody is prepared to counter that because it is true. I could have rightly been called out as 'Anti-English' to use such language in the past (so I did not), because the union was, ultimately, Scotland's free choice (which I used to say). Johnson changed all that.

No Section 30 showed weakness. Pathetic, feeble, cowardice. Tusk was mocking England for it, Raab knew it, and the truth hurts.

My folks brought me up to stand up to cowardly bullies and call them out for what they are. So that's what I'll be doing now until such time as our cowardly freeloading thief of a neighbour has guts to accept they lost the election, quits greetin, and gives the democratic ball back. Brexit will never be a success if England is too scared to stand on its own two feet.

And Scots agree with me. They agree that it should be Holyrood's decision on iref2 alone, and that the UK is no longer a democracy.

But that's a waste of time because it's irrelevant in the big scheme of things. The public never judges parties by the individual; they expect a few bad eggs in all. They judge primarily by policies, whether these match with what they want, and whether these are delivered / they believe they will be.

What's important is we are now 51% Yes and neither Thomson or Mackay had any effect / will have any effect on this respectively.

    12. You can't 'groom' someone 16 years or over as they are a consenting adult with respect to personal relationships, including those of sexual nature. They can enter into legal contracts, including getting married, including same sex, without the need for parental permission.

      https://www.inbrief.co.uk/offences/grooming-children/

Thick as pigshit people don't now this.

Which is why Mr Mackay is not in any trouble. At least for now.

    13. It may not have been illegal, it was inappropriate. There is a range of legal behaviour which cannot be entered into by a senior government minister.

It showed massive error of judgement.

It was also politically very stupid. These things are unforgiveable in a politician.

Clearly he should have resigned, very possibly he should stand down.

It is bizarre to see people twisting themselves in knots on here. There was no other course of action for Mackay or Sturgeon to take.

Don't let the independence question completely warp your judgement.

      Delete
    14. I completely agree with you there Niall. Exactly what I've been trying to say. He's made a complete erse of himself, with some pretty creepy behaviour. Resignation the only option.

Which is why I'm puzzled as to why people are twisting what Mackay did with lies when there's no need to; his behaviour is unacceptable without any need to embellish it by misleading people. Unionists have way overplayed a good hand it seems to me.

If people twist things, such as implying the young man was 'underage' (and Mackay actually checked he wasn't), all they do is undermine themselves by misleading people. Everyone in Scotland knows 16 year olds are not children; they know the law and anyone 16 or over is or has been there. Jeez, at 16 I was dating a women of 24 for a while while some of my classmates were starting families.

Here is the NSPCC on the matter.

      https://learning.nspcc.org.uk/child-protection-system/children-the-law/#heading-top

In Scotland, a child legally becomes an adult when they turn 16

If Mr Mackay is to be reprimanded for a lack of moral judgement, this is only undermined by those accusing him being immoral too, i.e. by lying / misleading rather than sticking to the facts of the matter.

While I'm straight, I've sensed a lot of latent homophobia on display; or at least dog whistling along those lines because people know that homophobia still persists.

      Delete
    15. Yeah, but man, your posts on this story seriously suck. All this "were you not a real man at 16?" etc. Young people, even 'real men' (?) can get abused or coerced into doing things they don't want to do. Read the account of any victim of date rape - yes this does happen to men, including physically capable men well over 16.

There is no proof that Mackay was planning to do anything like this to this boy of course, but reading the transcript makes me think he credibly posed a risk to him and gives rise to lots of concern. Firstly, there was his refusal to take no for an answer, even when it was clear from the boy's outright denial of gay interest and later failure to answer that he wasn't engaged in the interaction. Secondly, there was his request to keep his messages secret and 'between us'. Thirdly, there was his frequent attempts to get the boy to leave his home and travel somewhere far away (Bishopton/Edinburgh) to meet Mackay, and his frequent offers of travel fares, tickets to rugby, the chance to meet rugby stars, and a paying job to do so.

To me, this is a series of red flags which any responsible person should be concerned about. I dont think unionist vs nationalist is the issue here.

There are grey areas and blurred lines when it comes to consent. Young people (yes even formally, legally above the age of consent 16 year olds) need to learn about drawing firm boundaries and making their discomfort clear when necessary.

Can you think about this and maybe moderate the tone of your posting a little? Taking the opportunity to brag about your older girlfriend at that age is a bit cringey tbh.

      Delete
    16. The first part of your post is just disgusting. As you said, there is no evidence Mackay had any such intent.

If you have trawled through all the messages, then you are as creepy as Mackay. If you have not, you are not really in a position to put him on trial in the way you are.

Unless someone is involved in an official investigation, they'd need to be weird as fuck to want to read through someone else's private chat. Some sort of creepy pervert / voyeur.

I was an adult at 16 in every respect. Legally and 'socially'. I have no problem saying so and no problems with winding up those who are trying to twist reality. Young men of 16 do little else but think of sex most of the time; they are not little innocent child-like cherubs any more by a long shot. Many are built like brick shithouses too.

People of any age can be vulnerable to abuse. In Scotland, you are an adult from age 16 as per the NSPCC website.

    18. "If you have trawled through all the messages, then you are as creepy as Mackay."

Don't be fucking moronic. I read a story in a national newspaper because I wanted to find out the reason for the resignation of a government minister. I'm glad to see you think he is creepy though.

" they'd need to be weird as fuck to want to read through someone else's private chat."

It was not a private chat. One of the two people involved chose to make it public which is how I read it. If you have a genuine expectation of privacy when messaging people you don't know on Facebook or Instagram, you are deluded.

"I was an adult at 16 in every respect. Legally and 'socially'."

We are all in awe of king of the lads Skier but don't you have drinking buddies you can tell this to?

"Young men of 16 do little else but think of sex most of the time; they are not little innocent child-like cherubs"

People often assume that teenage boys can't be abused because they think of nothing but sex - that's how female teachers who fuck their male pupils sometimes get away with it. It is reactionary, out of date thinking. And this boy made it clear in the chat he wasn't gay.

"As you said, there is no evidence Mackay had any such intent."

That is not what I said. I said there is no proof he had any such intent. There is evidence that his behaviour towards a young person was concerning - particularly his refusal to take no for an answer. He start to sound desperate towards the end.

If I was a relative or trusted friend of this boy, and he showed me these messages and said "I'm not gay, but I maybe fancy going to the rugby with this guy", I would advise him not to go. I would say that the messages made me feel that there was a reasonable *risk* that he would be put into an at best awkward and at worst threatening situation. I would say that I believed this man has sexual intentions. I would advise him to err on the side of caution and not go. If McKay really wanted to make a friendship with this boy (why exactly?) he could have asked to visit him at his family home.

What would you do if he were your close relative and he showed you the messages and asked your advice? Would you advise him to go alone to meet Mackay like he wanted?

Your behaviour is that of a voyeur, or at least someone who is weirdly obsessed with Mackay. Have you had a relationship with him previously?

Genius! And well worth tracking the answer to that question in the months ahead.

And let's hope that we don't have a scruffy little Weegie man giving us breakfast and "le patter" in the morning.

  25. It is possible that Derek Mackay , over a protracted period.has had personal emotional problems that caused him to act so. Others have posted of how discrete messaging is possible so why was he so careless?

    Questions unanswered:

Did the 16yr old boy respond to Mackay's advances, rebuff?

Why did the boy's mother approach the Sun newspaper? Had she taken her concerns to the police before contacting the Sun?

GWC: Are you bored? Attention seeking? Or just space wasting stupid?Nevertheless, take your time, enlighten us on the development of the Boabie in human species, it's purpose beyond semen excretion - caution, dogs and cats etc. etc., have Boabies too.

    Awaiting your non-frivilous response.

    2. It really doesn't look good that the family went to the Sun rather than the police. One you go to for money (or to grind an axe), the other for genuine help.

    3. If you go to the polis they say they are too busy and stretched. You go to the Sun then the polis make time.

    4. I've only had to call the cops a couple of times, and on both occasions they were round very quickly and sorted the problem quickly.

One of these problems was unsolicited communications.

Ha! The charlatan Kelly now pretends to criticise non-hereditary peer elections.
I predict that he will be 'elevated' to the Dead Stoat Cloak Club for his services to the SNP in undermining radicalism.

  28. I think the Brexit woman echoed the British English Nazionalist argument exactly by constantly insisting that when England decides the time is right for Scotland to *ask* to leave then it should be *looked at* again because she's a democrat

I will decide what is good for the people *Adolph Hitler* 1939
    Parroted by Boris Johnson 2020
Of course Boris Johnson isn't in charge, Dominic Cummings is the man in charge who nobody elected and that's where the words and decisions come from just like in Germany when Martin Bormann was the ear whisperer for Hitler and there are still people looking for that guy

  29. Sinn Fein go into the Irish election out in front after an incredible poll surge.

Brexit negotiations will be interesting. While SF can’t win due to insufficient candidates, their influence may far outweigh the UKIP effect on the UK Tories (who never made a HoC breakthrough), and it would appear Irish politics will focus all out on full reunification going forward. With unionists now having lost every election in the north in a row, with border polls at 50/50 and England over a barrel, now’s the time. If you don’t back rock hard line with England in brexit negotiations, you are out of a job in Irish politics. You need to wave that veto in Johnson’s face and have him kiss your feet like he did Varadkars.

Ireland of course has spent the last 4 years re-routing supply chains etc, so even the hardest of brexits isn’t an issue for it economically. Not that Sinn Fein would care about an economic hit anyway; they are prepared to die for their cause, unlike the chickenshit, waster, layabout, freeloading cowardly England (hence no Section 30).
