Boris Johnson's contemptuous letter drops all the pretence: London's rule in Scotland is now officially a dictatorship

  1. That letter is dripping with contempt for the First Minister, for the Scottish Parliament and the Scottish people. It is a blunder by Johnson, never a good move to insult the elctorate in such an offhand manner.

  2. I think this is going to finish up both ugly and, well, let's just call it "extra-parliamentary".

    1. If you take away the ballot box, it becomes a little uglier every day until it inevitably happens anyway. History tells you that.

Lets just hope it happens sooner rather than later for that reason.

  3. The used car salesman 'snap it up now as you may not get another chance' tactic deployed by Salmond six years ago matters not a jot. Even if it did form part of the Edinburgh agreement, which it didn't, neither the UK government nor the Scottish Government had the moral authority to tie the hands of the Scottish people in the future.

If you want to maintain the UK, simply vote No.

    1. By bye English labour, hello Labour for indy.

The official split is already brewing. Today will rapidly accelerate things.

You'll have had your democracy, Scotland.

Well, here we go then. Now we find out Plan B and how submissive the SNP and the Scottish people really are. I have confidence in the former. Not so sure about the latter, but you never know.

We should also find out soon what difference it makes to the political weather to have Yes permanently over 50%. The momentum from that, plus Brexit, plus a recession, plus a Tory landslide, plus colonialists informing us that democracy is dead in Scotland - all this might just get us up near the 57% Yes figure (not 60%) where Unionists may admit defeat.

Come on, Scotland. FFS grow a spine.

  6. Deep English racist hatred of Scots clear now for all to see. Utter contempt for all Scots voters.

Sure only around half backed indy tomorrow, but 7 in 10 saw it as Scotland's decision alone / backed it in principle.

A knife right through the heart of all Scottish unionists who really believed in the union. They can only stare at the ground now. They cannot look their fellow countrymen in the eyes.

Just like the N. Irish unionists were stabbed, so the Scottish unionists were stabbed too. I said the English naitonalists would kill the union. Well, that's it. The life is draining out of it now, and the great big knife wound Johnson made will grow wider ever day.

Johnson's a fool. He's not attacking indy supports, he's attacking Scottish unionism. How can e.g. a pro-union mum now justify that to the dad over the dinner table? They have both lost their vote.

A unionist may have supported the union, but they have had the right to change their mind taken from them.

The union is dead. Unionists will never win an election again. Ever.

Understand that Scottish unionist parties. You will never win an election in Scotland again ever. Your only chance of winning is to back independence.

So how long is England prepared to simply keep overturning election results? I'm afraid the natives will get ever more restless.

Are you prepared to send in troops you sweaty fascist scum?

Any cunt that takes away my right to vote better watch their back.

If I can't vote freely anymore for my government of choice, then that's the niceties dispensed with.

    Blame Johnson.

    1. Agreed, Johnson's letter is trashing the Unionist fantasy of equal partners, the fantasy the Vow tugged at, that Johnson was now fatally wounded.

  7. There you have it. Scotland confirmed as not really a country but a region of the UK.

No union of sovereign countries could produce this scenario.

    Not a union at all.

    1. Scotland hasn't been a sovereign country for three hundred years. If it was you wouldn't want it to be independent. It baffles me that nationalists don't understand the legal status of Scotland. The UK isn't the EU. Scotland isn't a 'member state'. Scotland is a country, but that word carries no significance.

    2. Perhaps you wouldn't be so baffled if you didn't make assumptions. Where in my above statement is there any claim that Scotland is currently a sovereign country?

      Delete
    3. If you didn't think it was a possibility then why the outrage when having something you already know confirmed?

      Delete
    4. Because I think it ought to be.

    5. You think Scotland ought to be independent? That's not exactly surprising.

    6. Agreed. Either Scotland becomes a sovereign country, or the UK is our country. Let's dispense with this pretendy country, Union myth we have just now.

      Glad we cleared that up.

    7. The word 'union' does not equate to voluntary membership. The USA is a union but its states don't have the right to secede. It's just a product of history.

    8. Fair point. It'd be better for you though if this independence fad passes soon.

Holding Scotland in union against its will wouldn't be a good look. Just a tad colonial

    9. The point is not whether Scotland is truly a sovereign country, or should be, but that the 2014 result was won on the back of selling the idea that Scotland really was (is) a real country exercising its right within a consensual union.

  8. It's long, tedious and nerve racking for all of us but today's suspension of democracy is just another step towards the multi crisis of the crumbling uk that will lead to indy.
Brexit hasn't happened yet, Johnson has not yet multiply betrayed his new, ex Labour voters, the mod's Trident replacement budget has not yet hit the wall - to name but a few.
On the doorsteps and on the streets build, build, build. No one (sensible) said this was going to be quick or easy.
    Keep cool and keep fighting.

  9. Enough is enough. Just off the top of my head I can think of organising a constant, peaceful* presence during the day around all the premises in Alister Jack's fiefdom. People turning up, peacefully, outside Tory Party offices and MPs' surgeries with "Right to Choose" banners might help too. I expect you can think of more and better.

    * See, for example, this article from 5 November 2013 in the Washington Post, entitled "Peaceful protest is much more effective than violence for toppling dictators": https://archive.is/eiw5h - and think Velvet Revolution.

    1. Absolutely.

As an irishman, I can confirm the Brits are cowardly chickenshits that piss their pants if the natives show a bit of resolve.

Yes movement has more than enough folks to bring down our new new English dictator.

  10. And lets not give Johnson the title of PM of the UK.

He is an English dictator now. To be PM of the UK / Scotland, requires consent. He just withdrew that from Scotland.

Johnson overruled the 2014 referendum. It is only valid as long as it can be overturned by Scottish voters freely in the same way the decision was made. Johnson has refused that, ergo the result is cancelled.

It can no longer be claimed that Scots support the union. There is no vote which can be held up as consent for that.

English imperialist fascist scum can get to fuck. The union is over.

    2. In the EU they allow you to go to the polls freely, even depart the union if you want. This contrasts the UK. Here, the English fascist regime just cancels election results and bans folk voting if things don't go their way.

    3. That's because the EU is composed of independent nation states whereas the UK is a single nation state.

  12. The Nat sis should just close down Holyrood and save a fortune for public services. The Scottish Mps and a small beaurocracy could ensure public services. Down with subsidised talking shops. No more shoes for Knickerless.

  13. No, the 2014 result is cancelled. If a vote cannot be undone by voters freely, it ceases to be their will. This is basic democracy. No electorate / government is bound by the decision of a previous one.

What you can be sure of, is by Johnson taking your vote away from you, and that of all your country folk, is that unionists will never win an election in Scotland again. Ever.

Johnson has set in motion what happened in Ireland, numerous other colonies of the British empire, and other aggressive empires.

For over 300 years the union existed by consent. Or at least Scots believed that was the case. Johnson just ended that in a few words. He's broken the union, and, probably fairly quickly, you will see that developing and wish he'd done what Cameron did, for Cameron was wise enough to understand that continued consent was the way to save the UK.

And you are not a unionist. Scottish unionists support Scots freely choosing the union. Something Johnson just ended.

The Welsh are already standing with their mouths wide open as they too realise they are prisoners of racist English fascists. They quite liked the union too. But now they know it's not a union, as unions are only by consent.

  14. The 2014 result is cancelled? Lol!

    Says who?

It seems to me that today's letter from Downing Street simply reaffirms its importance and impact.

  15. Tory party leader ineptitude is why there will be a second referendum and why it should be now. It was Cameron's stupidity in having an EU referendum that he lost and the "significant change in circumstances" resulting from that outcome that has brought us to where we are now.

Add to that the incompetence of May as leader in her negotiations with withdrawal from the EU that cost her her job as PM. Not once was the EU referendum result in Scotland considered, it was ignored as was all input from the Scottish government. Infact they even paased laws affecting Scotland that Holyrood would not consent too.

The cherry on top is the arrogance shown be Johnson with that pathetic response to a request from the Scottish government for a Section 30 order.

There is absolutely no doubt that this arrogance will come at a price, it might take some time to work it's way through but the direction of travel will be clear very soon.

It's very satisfy to think that the responsibilty for the end of the Union will land squarely on the shoulders of the Conservative and Unionist party, their members and supporters.

We should erect statues to those 3 Prime Ministers in Freedom Square once Independent. Something to laugh at, Johnson you clown!

  16. Could there be a separate question asking people's opinion on whether there should be a second referendum?
