Can the SNP prevent a nuclear holocaust by beating Jo Swinson in East Dunbartonshire?

Just by coincidence, one of my two constituency previews in today's edition of The National is Jo Swinson's seat of East Dunbartonshire. So can the SNP save the world from nuclear annihilation by getting the leader of the "Liberal Democrats" out of parliament? Find out HERE. The other profile is Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath, currently held by Shadow Scottish Secretary Lesley Laird - you can read that one HERE.

  1. It was a Conservative estimate that over a million allies would be killed if an invasion of Japan happened. In the scheme of war the nuclear devises dropped in Japan saved more lives.

    1. I dare say Hitler could have dreamt up a similar spurious justification for his own war crimes.

    2. I am sure the soldiers that were being lined up on the landing craft were not complaining. It is OK for us who were not born and not faced with death to have moral outrage. So young James would you have chosen the landing craft or the bomb?

    3. There wasn't a choice to be made. Mass-murdering innocent civilians is a war crime. You don't commit war crimes. Full stop, end of discussion.

    4. The Japanese had surrendered and then they dropped the bombs anyway. They were trying to frighten the Russians and Chinese. So, all the civilians could have been saved.

    5. We can presume that a large % of those killed were against the Japanese empire's military exploits. Universal suffrage only began after the war, so we cannot say the Japanese population supported it.

Certainly, Hitler never had the support of the German people. He consistently failed to win elections, do ended up doing an England, and simply ignoring results, declaring voting illegal / sending in the black and tans etc.

    6. I wonder how Adolf had all those tens of thousand Nat si supporters zeig heiling on the cobbles of Nuremburg if he had no support. They look like the Nat si gatherings in George Square.

    7. GWC,

      No, GWC, they really don't.

    8. Go on, do a quick google for "George Square nazi salute" - there's only one flag you'll see, and it's got great dollops of red on it.

    9. The last flag I did see was the Islamic Flag on our City Chambers in Glasgow.

The words of General, later President Eisenhower.
There are some myths that are so widely discredited as to be embarrassing.

  4. 56% Unionist, you Nat sis should be on 80% if you believe your own Pravda.

    1. Tories are not unionist. They are breaking up the UK by handing NI to Eire and the EU.

    4. I kind of suspect that GWC will end up disappointed.

These are 'interesting times' and GWC may have to explain to us how a minority of right wing nutcases are what Scotland thought when they are in the minority. It is GWC modus operandii, and it has been a 'bit shit' from the day he appeared here.

Let us see how this election run out.

      After.

I'd expect GWC to share his humiliation on here, but he or she will tell us all that their defeat was actually a victory.

Such is the joy of being a fact free freak.

      Someone who says:

"Give or take a fat finger or a percentage the Unionist vote is holding up."

      Well, we'll see.

    5. I have been disappointed with all sorts of government's especially the Scottish Nat sis who are just Tories hiding under a shell. However the working classes take being fucked by the ruling class as routine.

  6. Just took what I assume was a Scotland only Panelbase poll (asked about Westminster, Holyrood, indyref2 etc). May or may not have been a Rev Stu poll because there were a few questions about trans issues.

Either way, maybe we're finally getting our first full Scottish poll of the campaign.

    1. Bear in mind that the political parties commission their own private polling, so there's no guaranteed it'll ever be published. But yeah, if there were questions about the trans issue, that sounds like Mr Campbell all day long.

  7. Gordie.

I doubt our hero cares. It is up to him whether losing readers, which he probably has, or retaining others is a balance he can sustain. What, I think, it is fair to say, is that our good host writes for.

I do not always agree with Mr Kelly. But I always find him interesting.

    1. There's been no loss of readership on the site. (Certainly no net loss, which is the only way I can measure it.) "You are losing readers because of X or Y" is the sort of thing people say because they want to believe it, but it has the significant disadvantage of not actually being true.

    2. The Wings website is focused mainly on the independence issue. It's the wings twitter where the equality/rights and science based policy arguments feature prominently*.

I'm not sure why he didn't use his other, personal twitter for it, given the topic is nothing really to do with independence. The issue is one that will exist in whether we are in the UK or not.

*I say this because it's not about trans at all. It's about everyone, including my family and I (amusingly, I'm unquestionably defined as 'trans non-binary' in the race to define the undefinable, even though I'm just a regular enough male).

I do find it important (and as I scientist, I can't help but jump on the logical fallacies of the utter sexist bollocks that is 'gender identify'), but its not an indy issue.

Without droning on again, I am 100% behind the founder of stonewall on the topic:

An excellent, measured article, and a must-read for our MSPs.

General election 2019: English Labour to pledge windfall tax on Scottish oil companies

English Labour's general election manifesto - to be unveiled later - is expected to include a windfall tax on oil companies operating in Scotland.

The move is part of leader Jeremy Corbyn's plan to "transform" England into a low carbon, green economy, using taxes looted from Scotland.

He plans to stop Scottish voters objecting to this by withdrawing their right to vote for independence...

If Scots cannot freely vote for independence, they are not willing UK taxpayers, but are having their money stolen from them by England.

    1. In the absence of Scots being able to freely vote for independence at the time of their own choosing, then 'British oil' becomes truly 'Scottish oil'. All taxes from Scotland are Scottish. not British. Scotland ceases to be British, but Scottish. Consent is gone; this only applies so long as it can be freely given or withdrawn at the ballot box.

All the indy slogans like 'It's our oil' become true. It would be Scottish oil and it would be being stolen. And Scots would need to take all necessary steps to stop that.

This is why the refusal of a Section 30 is extremely dangerous.

  9. No idea how many UK polls there have been over the last few weeks. A lot! Now with 20 campaigning days left not a single Scottish poll has appeared. It is distinctly weird. The sub samples seem to suggest a good SNP showing and a catastrophe for Labour and mediocrity for the Liberals but they are a poor substitute for a full poll.

    1. There is definitely polling going on, YouGov just had specific questions about the Tories in my constituency and the SNP.

      Delete
    2. It depends on what questions were asked, but GB-wide YouGov polls are asking people who they're voting for in their own constituencies, to get more accurate results. So that might not have been a Scottish poll.

  10. Jo Swinson will wave her arms and envelope any nuclear explosion so it doesn't hit East Dunbartonshire
When the time comes for her to turn up in her constituency I bet a million quid she'll say something ridiculous like that while pointing to a pothole
