Is this an all-time low for Scottish Labour?

As we all know, an individual Scottish subsample from a GB-wide voting intention poll is rarely of much use, except as a straw in the wind when there's absolutely nothing else on offer.  But the latest subsample from YouGov is worth mentioning for the sheer comedy value alone.

SNP 38%, Conservatives 22%, Liberal Democrats 19%, Labour 11%, Greens 5%, UKIP 2%, Brexit Party 1%

I must admit that I don't keep track of all-time highs and lows in subsamples, but I find it hard to believe that Labour have ever been much lower than 11% in a YouGov subsample.  OK, we all know that they aren't really on 11% (and the Lib Dems certainly aren't really on 19%), but nevertheless YouGov's subsamples tend to be a little more reliable and less volatile than those from other firms, so it's reasonable to suppose that Scottish Labour must be doing pretty badly for this to even be possible.

What makes the timing strange is that there are signs that Labour may have steadied the ship at GB level - the newest Survation poll gives them a three point boost and has them back in the lead, while both Opinium and YouGov show a reduced Tory lead, albeit due to a falling Tory vote rather than a rising Labour vote.  In YouGov's case what seems to have happened is that the Tories have suddenly lost a significant slice of support to UKIP and Nigel Farage's new Brexit Party, probably due to the (dubious) perception that Brexit is now at risk after last week's Commons votes.  Meanwhile, memories of the Independent Group split are fading with no further defections having taken place for weeks - which is very good news for both Labour and the Lib Dems, who had both taken a hit in polls conducted in the immediate aftermath of the breakaway.

There are suggestions that Jeremy Corbyn may be contemplating another no confidence vote in the government if the Brexit deal is voted down for a third time.  The only way the government can conceivably lose a confidence vote at this stage is if a smattering of Tory MPs take the nuclear option and risk their own careers by voting with the opposition.  Presumably the Labour whips already know whether there is the remotest prospect of that happening, but even if there isn't, it may still be good tactics to table a no confidence motion because it will put the Independent Group (and possibly the Lib Dems) on the spot.  It's one thing for former Labour MPs to talk about propping up a Tory government by abstaining, but actually being seen to do it for real is another matter.  If the Independent Group start to be seen as the Tories' little helpers, it could well deter wavering Labour MPs from defecting.

    2. It's a bit much to call them Scotland's second party when they have just 22% in the poll. Also, the Tories got less electoral support (19.0% of total electorate) in 2017 than Major managed (19.4%) and even less than thatcher averaged 1983/87 (19.3%).

The Tory upper vote% in Scotland hasn't changed in decades, but they've benefitted when turnouts drop.

Also, 2017 was the first full English EVEL election where Scots could no longer elect any members of the 'UK' [sic English] cabinet due to the new apparteid policy. While shoe shiners like GWC dutifully wend out to lick the boots, huge swaths of SNP/Green/Yes voters didn't see the point any more. While that gave the unionists something of a propoganda coup, you can understand the Scots mentality.

Scots voting in UK elections now is like black folks in the old deep south gratefully kissing white feet for being given a few battered seats at the back of the bus rather than being forced to walk.

Let's not pretend otherwise. EVEL relegates Scots (and Welsh/N. Irish) to second class citizens. Neither the cabinet nor shadow cabinet have a single jock minister; and these posts are handed out willy nilly now as it buys loyality.

  2. Quelle surprise! I mean it's not like people haven't been saying this for ages. WTO warning the UK that an open border is a no-no. Must be down the Irish sea or on the island of Ireland (which would break the GFA).

You see when you sign up to an international deal, be that a peace deal or a trade one, the world expects you to stick to it. If you don't there will be serious repercussions, including people not signing any deals with you as you can't be trusted to stick to them.

  4. Mood music is apparently that the deal will be brought back for a third time only if May is confident that she can get it through.

Of course May's instincts about what other people will do are often wrong (Geoffrey Cox?) but it does raise the question about what
the opposition will do if May accepts that the deal is dead and asks the EU for a long extension (perhaps with a second referendum promise attached). Does Corbyn go for an immediate no-confidence? o the SNP press for another indyref?

I won the Battle of Waterloo along with Paul Nuttall of UKIP. We stopped Hitler in his tracks when he tried to invade Vera Lynn on the White Cliffs of Dover. He didn't like it up him. Then we jumped on to a Russian rocket and stopped it landing in Cuba or somewhere. Then we went for a drink in a Witherspons pub and I had a pint of John Bull Real Ale, mine host, and a plate of mushy peas and jellied eels before me and Paul went out and climbed Mount Everest for Her Majesty the Queen (God Bless Her) and polished off a few starving piccaninies. Problem is that the right do go out and vote, so gain on low turnouts. The right always preys on the downtrodden / those who've lost hope in the system. When politics hits the rocks and it seems there is no 'good / trustworthy' party to vote for, there is always a nasty right-wing one to benefit from disenchanted voters staying away from the polls.

In 2017, due to England introducing the new 'UK cabinet/shadow cabinet jobs for English MPs only' policy (EVEL), the turnout in Scotland fell substantially, mainly to the detriment of the SNP/Greens/Yes. The hard unionist right gained as a result.

    1. Yea, Nationalists really crapping it that Brexit won't happen. Brexiters don't get to leave the EU. Polling shows that without Brexit then support for reunification is not even close to a level were the GFA says a border poll has to be held so that the Irish nationalists are screwed. As for Scotland the Scot Gov/SNP have spent the last two years shouting how leaving the EU is going to be bad for Scotland. To then campaign for Independence from a UK in the EU and therefore leave the EU (sticking up two fingers at its neighbors in the process) would make them seem like lunatics. Certainly going to be no courting of Scotland going on, as has been pointed out numerous times the EU will back another member to the hilt.

    2. Indy with no fucking plan at all 'tomorrow' outside of any campaign is on ~47%. Each day, unionists pass on while young indy voters come of age.

EU or not the UK's fucked! It's just a matter of how many years are left.

It's dying. It has no purpose any more. It's a relic of a past age. The last crumbling remnants of a once vast empire. The last few years of the imperial rise and fall curve.

The retreat reached home shores in 1997 when the sun finally set on Hong Kong and the celtic nations voted for semi-independence. It's now reached all the way to way back to where it began, and the rotten core is crumbling before our eyes.

This has happened so many times in history before. It's a textbook case. Enjoy living history; the last days of Rome.

    3. Oh dear,

How much do you think that will drop when Scot Nationists start campaigning to trash the economy, risk peoples jobs, stip people of the EU citizenship? the No side won't have to do anything, the SNP/ Indy supporters have been screaming from the rooftops about the damage that Scotland leaving the EU will do.

Good luck telling the 60+% of the Scottish population that support being in the EU that you want to take it away from them. Sure there will be the hardcore Scotexiters who will still vote Yes, but the majority will vote to keep their EU citizenship, especially those younger voters you mention, they are not going to give up their EU citizenship.

    4. I'll add that if brexit is cancelled without the people of the UK actually voting for that in a new EUref, then a new Scottish iref would be wholly justified on the basis that democracy was no longer being respected in the UK.

We cannot have the result of the EU referendum ignored. The UK must leave the EU unless the people clearly overturn their decision in a new vote of some form. Scotland must also leave with the UK unless it's people freely choose not to, e.g. by going for independence in the EU/EEA. However, that decision lies with them via their parliament alone; it is not one for would be tin pot dictators down in London to decide on.

      Delete
    5. Of course the Scottish Government have already decided that Scotland will leave the EU with the UK. By choosing not to request let alone hold a referendum to ask the Scottish People if they wanted to leave with the UK in time before the UK leaves. So they have completely failed in that respect.

As for your first paragraph just another sign of Nationalists fearing that Brexit will not happen. Making up justifications for a indy ref on basis of things that are not going to happen (no party has ever suggested that they will revoke Article 50 without a second ref)

      Delete
    6. For the record, I'd like brexit to be cancelled right away. That would respect the will of the Scottish people and avoid an economic and social disaster. I'm not sure how that would go down in England, but that's not my concern as I'm not English.

However, I fail to see brexit being cancelled would stop the inexorable demise of the British empire and Scotland's return to nation status again (something it has been for the vast majority of its history). Scots damn near voted Yes last time with no clear brexit threat and the demographics have been chipping away at the unionist vote since. Time is not on the unions side.

Scotland's union with England is just a relatively short chapter in its history. Brexit is the end of the union/empire retreating back to where it all began. As I said previously, it reached home shores in 1997 and now the collapse has crossed into England.

Both Scotland (#indyref) and England (#Brexit) are trying to find their place in the post-Great British empire world. The main difference is that Scotland has never lost an the empire as it never really belonged to Scotland (not at ~8% of the UK population).

      Delete
    7. Because you will be asking people to vote for a hard Scotexit, screwing the economy, telling EU nationals to F**K off, sticking two fingers up at Scotland's nearest neighbours etc etc. Basically everything that the SNP have said about how bad it would be to leave the EU would come back to bite them. That's before you get to things like voter fatigue.

If Brexit doesn't happen then will be no Indy Ref till late on the next parliament at the earliest (assuming there is a nationalist majority of which there is no guarantee.

Project 'You jocks are just basically shite and can't be a country' cost No it's 70-30 lead. Damn near cost them the referendum based on recent revelations.

If that's how iref#2 will be fought, then the union is already finished.

      Delete
    9. No but Scotland will leave. It will join a few years latter, but leave none the less, hurting the economy etc, the UK won't veto Scotland joining but can make sure its not a quick process.

That's your respect agenda, and that's your Project Fear 2 poster right there.

    11. Yup, but the Yes side have done all the hard work. Leeaving the EU, even for a short time will have a negative effect on Scotland, joining the EEA instead of the EU will have a negative effect on Scotland. 'No' does not have to do anything, the SNP / Yes side have done all the hard work over the last couple of years.

Which is why if Brexit does not happen than Indy ref2 will not happen until towards the end of the next parliament at the earliest (dependent on the next parliament having a Nationalist majority.)

      Delete
    12. If you think the No side doesn't have much work to do, I suggest you watch the news, read the papers etc.

It's basically impossible to sell the UK politically now. It's not brexit - that's perfectly workable like e.g. Norway or even a canada style deal if years of planning were put in place - it's just the UK political structure is collapsing due to gross incompetence, populism and corruption. It's rotten to the core. Absolutely fucked. 100% bog standard textbook end of empire / last days of Rome stuff. There is no way out of this hole that doesn't involve complete collapse. Only then can the rebuilding start.

I stand by my prediction that the only way this can be resolved is with the British empire finally returning to it's original state, completing the cycle. Then England will likely rejoin the EU as a normal European country.

Scotland is already moving on. England must lose (the last remnants of the once great imperial) Britain before it can do the same.

As for now, we are approaching some sort of peak crisis. When that has been 'resolved' in some form (crash out, stay in, exit with deal), you can expect the people of Scotland to move very rapidly on with what they have set to one side briefly while they await this resolution, i.e. the independence.

There is no going back for Britain now. It is in its very last days. It has been on this trajectory for a century; the decline beginning around 1922.

  29. A question for unionists, does Labour's brexit plan (lol) give the Scottish government/SNP a full veto in the coming EU/Global trade negotiations or will English Jeremy simply overrule democracy and power grab devolved fishing, agriculture etc back from Scotland like the Tories are busing preparing for?

Even if Labour magically won an election and somehow came up with a plan for brexit, it would need to trash its own devolution, crushing Holyrood, or give all the home nations a full veto. Just think of that; the Jocks deciding English trade deals!

This crisis is only maybe 1% in? We've a whole long way to go yet on this UK smashing constitutional crisis!

    1. Question for Nationists when an Election results in a hung Parliament needed the SNP to prop up Labour does it support Labours plan and power grab develoved fishing or does it not causing another election that will probably result in the Conservatives back into power? Either way the SNP is screwed....

    2. In this scenario, the SNP hold the complete balance of power. I can't see how that could be in any way damaging for them.

The Scottish public, who back devo max by ~75%, would demand Labour make no power grab or they'd vote for Scottish indy.

If Labour are proposing to crush Holyrood rather than give the devolved parliaments a full say/veto in trade deal negotiations, then the UK is over.

      Delete
    3. So i'm assuming that they would insist that Scotland has it own immigration policy then? If they don't (and as they hold the balance of power) they would be hypocrites if they carried on supporting Labour. Full fiscal control of course would have to be agreed on in return for support. Essentially its got to be devo max in return for support, anything else would be a betrayal of SNP voters and devo max would be enough to prevent a yes majority in any indy ref.

Of couse they would want an article 50 but that would come after 3 or 4 years, if you agree to supply/demand or coalition then can't expect for it to being a short term thing. This of course would mean the mandate would expire with no guarantees that the next Scot Paliment would have a nationalist majority.

You really need no deal to happen, anything else and nationalism is screwed

      https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2018/feb/07/scottish-government-calls-for-devolution-of-immigration-policy

Scottish government calls for devolution of immigration policy

      https://morningstaronline.co.uk/article/snp-calls-devolved-immigration-powers-following-new-poll

SNP calls for devolved immigration powers following new poll

Following a new poll showing overwhelming support among both Scots and people across Britain for devolution of immigration powers, SNP immigration spokesperson Stuart McDonald said giving Holyrood control would allow Scotland to “build a system that meets Scotland's needs and values”.

Just a couple of countless examples. Course the SNP want immigration devolved. They want everything.

      And you are forgetting EVEL.

The SNP can't support any English government on English only policy. So, unless Corbyn can command a majority of English MPs, he can't realistically be English PM as he couldn't necessarily legislate on the English NHS etc. How could a Labour PM be that on the back of Scots MP support if the English Tories could outvote Labour in England? Impossible.

So, any SNP-Labour coalition is not really realistic other than to create devo max and completely change the UK constitution. Not unless Labour take England too, but if they've done that, they probably don't need Scots MPs anyway. And that's before we get to Scottish MPs being lepers which no English party will enter coalition with. English parties will only enter coalition with other English registered parties due to inherent racism.

Anyway, EVEL utterly fucks things for Labour and so the UK. But it cannot be undone for populist English nationalism is a flaming wrecking ball currently trashing its way through Britain. Now it has been unleashed, it cannot be stopped; it will keep swinging, smashing everthing, until there's nothing left of the UK.

Scottish nationalism could be just about contained. English nationalism is too big a force.

    5. English parties will only enter coalition with other English registered parties due to inherent racism.

You have evidence of this, I mean clear cut evidence that and English Party has not gone in to collation with a Scottish Party because of racism. If not then you are just spouting delusional nationalist clap trap

    6. Can you explain why only English MPs can hold UK cabinet positions?

Why are blacks and Jews, sorry Scots, not able to elect the PM...Home Secretary...Chancellor?

Not a single member of the cabinet or shadow Cabinet is from a Scots constituency.

The reason is that Scots don't have the same voting power in Westminster because they are blacks/Jews...sorry, Scots.

This is why you won't ever get a formal coalition with a Scots party. Scots are considered a lesser people with reduced rights when it comes to electing the UK government.

    7. Can you explain why only English MPs can hold UK cabinet positions?

Steven Crabb, held a cabinate postion post EVEL is Scotish and represents a Welsh Constituency

Owen smith - shadow cabinate and could well of been leader of the Opposition not English.

As is said delusional Nationalist claptrap

    8. Erm, why are you talking blood and soil ('is Scottish' by blood). If someone is representing an English or Welsh constituency, they are very obviously not a Scottish MP; they are an English or Welsh MP. It matters not where they were born etc.

Secondly, you quote two Welsh MPs. Where are your Scottish examples? I am talking about Scotland, which is much more devolved than Wales and less British.

It is you that needs to explain why Scots MPs do not fully count when it comes to forming a UK government.

If e.g. Labour fails to win England, and the Tories hold a majority there, what happens? Is Corbyn going to be PM when the Tories can block all his NHS/Education policies etc as they hold a majority of English seats? How the fuck would that work?

And can Scots elect an MP to be the Prime Minister when that MP can't vote on any English matters like the NHS etc? How the fuck would that work?

The PM of the UK must be English. Likewise, Scots MPs cannot help form a proper UK government; the winning party must win England to form a full majority government. This is because Scots are second class.

That's what EVEL insures indirectly, and the Tories + Labour both know it. It's simple racism. England has made the British parliament its own without asking the other nations. England can get its own parliament. How fucking dare it just make Westminster its own.

Corybn's not that interested in Scotland as it's MPs cannot help him change anything domestically in England.

EVEL effectively prevents a Scottish MP ever holding the highest cabinet positions like PM and chancellor. At best they might hold a ‘non-devolved’ post (like work and pensions), but Scots are still second class citizens if they can’t realistically help elect a full UK government and have their MPs serve in all cabinet positions.

"And I say to the country that my programmes for the NHS are Education are programmes I can't even vote on!"

      Aye, right.

Better be the case as polling suggests the Labour vote in Scotland may be falling off a cliff as we speak. I wonder why?

If TM puts her deal back to H of C. If whips think they have persuaded ( perhaps unlikely) almost but not quite enough MPs to get her deal through, NS/IB could offer oor 35 MPs to back the deal. In return we'd require:
    1) Section 30 order for Indy ref when SG wants it and conducted in a reasonable manner.
    2) A guarantee of a sterling currency union until the S. Gov decided otherwise.
    3) various commitments to fair media releases etc.
