Corbyn's day of infamy as Labour become the party of colonialism

If it was the case that Labour were simply saying that winning a majority in Scotland at the next general election would constitute a mandate to block an independence referendum, that might just about be a defensible position.  (It would still be wrong, incidentally, because a Holyrood election is the appropriate arena to seek constitutional mandates.  But at least it would be an acknowledgement that a Scottish mandate is required.)  What they instead appear to be saying is that they will seek a Britain-wide "mandate" to block an indyref, and even if Scotland comprehensively rejects Labour for a third consecutive general election, the wishes of voters south of the border will be imposed in Scotland, and the wishes of voters who actually live in Scotland will be contemptuously disregarded.

That isn't democracy.  That's a hostage situation.  Labour have today embraced the logic of colonialism - indeed, it's precisely the same logic that has fuelled the persecution of the Catalan independence movement.  Incredibly, Labour have looked at what the Spanish government did and thought "wow, that's a template we must copy".  We used to think the idea of a British government seeking the imprisonment of SNP ministers was totally unthinkable...but then the idea that a major UK party would oppose Scotland's right to self-determination was unthinkable until very recently.  Who knows what the future might hold.

There is a very clear lesson here for the SNP.  Attaining a referendum via a Section 30 order is now a non-starter regardless of whether there is a Tory or Labour government.  So from this moment on we shouldn't hear any more about how the SNP leadership are temperamentally opposed to a referendum held without Westminster's consent.  Of course a Section 30 would have been preferable, but you can only choose an option that is actually open to you.  If you will the ends, you have to will the means.  That leads us inescapably to one of two possibilities - either a consultative referendum held without a Section 30 order (which would probably have to be defended at the Supreme Court), or the seeking of an outright mandate for independence at the next Holyrood election.

As for Corbyn's motivation for abandoning his long-standing and principled opposition to colonialism, I can only assume that it must be a cynical electoral calculation aimed at winning back voters who were won over by the moronic simplicity of the Tories' "No to Indyref 2" message in June 2017.  If so, it's an enormous gamble, because there were Yes voters who backed Corbyn last year, but for whom voting for a party explicitly seeking a mandate to block an indyref will be a step too far.  The penny seems to have finally dropped today for Cat Boyd, for example.

  1. Devolution is dead,at least the pretence of devolution is.
The London based political parties are now all making clear that they will do anything to stop another Scottish independence referendum from taking place.
No more hiding behind cosy devolution for Scottish labour supporters,it is either independence or London rule.
    Unfortunately,many will choose the latter.

  2. The next referendum should to repeal the treaty of Union, thus returning the country of Great Britian to the dust bin. Left with Scotland and England as two seperate countries.

Believe it or not my Celtic cousin you would be surprised at just how many ordinary Labour party members totally support an Independent Scotland. it is your right to determine your own future and as Socialists to support you 100%, no questions asked. Labour has and is changing and once again, decency, honesty and principles are being driven from below. The "old" Labour party still has its Starry eyed, "we know best" adherants so be quiet but they will be cleared out over time. Many would be more comfortable in the Tory party anyway.Keep the faith.

Deary me James. The last line in your article suggests that Cat Boyd has changed her mind as the "penny has dropped". The other Anon, not me, asked if there was an article that goes with that statement. I was merely trying to asist you by identifying the source of Anons request.

And, yes, it's completely impossible for Cat Boyd to have communicated her thoughts without writing an article. She does not possess the power of speech. A website known as "Twitter" does not exist. There is NO CONCEIVABLE WAY she could have done it without writing an article. So, yes, you're right, it's obvious I must have made the whole thing up.

  4. I don't think your "Corbyn's motivation" is accurate.

It is more likely that Scotland is too valuable to a Brexit-ed UK for even Corbyn to let go. (Ergo - Scotland is so valuable it is essential to the English status quo....or to put it another way - England may not survive in its current form if Scotland leaves the UK)

Scotland needs to start reading between the lines (stop assuming benign motivations) and plan their exit with their eyes open to the full extent Westminster will go to.

  7. Corbyn is anti-colonial but probably does not see England as a colonial power. What should they know of England who only England know? Scotland is the cash cow that supports England in the style to which it has become accustomed and it is close to impossible for any English politician to consider a 'Britain' consisting of England, a tiny dysfunctional bit of Ireland and an increasingly unwilling Wales.

  10. Honest question from a Unionist: What (IYO) would be the point of holding a consultative referendum which would be largely ignored by Noers? What good would it do to the Indy movement when an plebiscite which would have a 95% Yes vote on a 35% electoral turnout and would not be in any way legitimate? Would it not be an embarrassment?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I'm obviously not replying for James but I'm interested to know where do you get the info of a 35% turnout?

If people vote yes majority in a referendum it will be exceedingly difficult to refuse to at least acknowledge that, don't you think? The first indyref set a precedent.

      Delete
    2. 35% is a fantasy figure plucked out of thin air. And how would the unionist parties justify a boycott anyway? If a consultative referendum takes place, that would almost certainly mean that the UK Supreme Court would have okayed it. That, surely, ought to be the very definition of 'legitimacy' for a unionist.

  11. Personally, I think Corbyn (& also Leonard) knows that UK needs Scotland's revenue. Our revenue is the only thing keeping the country afloat. He knows UK cannot afford to let Scotland go. So they will do everything within or WITHOUT the law, to prevent Scotland going for or obtaining independence. Scotland's Revenue is THE BOTTOM LINE.

  12. @ James Kelly- here we go again - the UK Supreme Court - dominated by, England? Why does Scotland, and it's politicians, recognise the Supreme Court? We have our own Scottish Law, we have no need of their Supreme Court.

In a normal country with normal people, including England, the aspiration is to elect a Government of your choice, not allow people in another country to do that for you.

  18. There's a case heading to the Supreme Court regarding the continuity bill based on the idea that Holyrood need to second guess Westminster and not do anything actually within it's devolved remit in anticipation of events that might change. As in not legislate on matters currently "reserved" to the EU but on leaving become fully under Holyrood control except where international treaty obligations kick in.

All that confusion means is that regardless of the right to hold a consultative referendum Westminster are in a frame of mind where they can simply veto it as even on the terms of enabling Holyrood to start consultations to achieve the will of the people of Scotland, as per UN charter obligations agreed to by the UK, it could have an impact on the constitution of the UK.

Apparently the SoS, Mundell, might have a veto. So the next level of stupidity will be that regardless of the right to hold consultative referenda being unarguably devolved and no S30 needed he, or his Labour successor, might be pig shit thick enough to overturn the legislation needed to organise one.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Hypothetically:
Internal party polling may now be showing that, if a second independence reference were held, the result would be yes.
In that case, the only way to maintain the union would be to block indyref2, by any means possible.

Pure speculation on my part, but this is the simplest explanation I can come up with to explain Mr Leonard proposing such an anti-democratic measure.

In normal circumstances the Treaty of Union, with all the well documented corruption and coercion which surrounded it, would be considered illegal and null and void under the terms of the 1969 Vienna Convention (ratified by the UK).
